low power storage and media solution
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-24-2024, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am looking for a solution for the following needs:
- I have a lot of files and media storage I want to save but also have available throughout my home
- main media are photos, music, and videos (DVD type movies, no bluray)
- I have various consumption stations which include: TV, 2 laptops, 1 desktop
- I want it available on LAN only, no WAN or remote
- expandability is important since I want to keep the system for at least 5y
- MOST IMPORTANT - I want a very low power consumption on idle. electricity prices are outrageous where I live

I don't mind building and maintaining a system but most DIY systems have higher power consumption than brand options.

I was thinking a Flashstor 6 since I see it has low power - 0.85W idle to 26W normal usage.

Thanks for the help.

NAS for Mac Studio M1 Ultra
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-23-2024, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi all,

Great guide to NAS.. I've been living with OWC RAIDs and Pegasus RAIDs via Thunderbolt 2 and 3 for years and they're not hacking it for me anymore. Any recommendations would be great appreciated. Wanted to try for SSD RAID, but not sure what the hell i'm doing.

  New & Want media server
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-23-2024, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm very new to this by the way, but i recently just set up jellyfin at home on my 2TB hdd on my gaming PC. I REALLY want a NAS that is able to handle transcoding well enough so that I can plug it in, run jellyfin on it and not worry about needing my PC to be on for me to watch my stuff around the house. I'd love to view 4k movies off of it, but from advice given to me by friends, they say there is no NAS that is able to handle that kind of load on its own. Also am not too sure how much storage I'd need to not worry too much about it again, my initial thought was anything over 10TB?

I'd really appreciate your advice!! What can I buy that suits my needs?

Plex Hardware Transcoding for Synology NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-23-2024, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, thanks for the great article explaining software/hardware transcoding for Plex with the glorious chart of the various Synology NAS models. I recently bought an 1821+ and ripped all of my Blu-rays and UHD Blu-rays. I would like to use the "Watch Together" feature in Plex to watch some content live with a friend in another city. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to want to work since he's using the PS5 as his Plex client. I am trying to talk him into getting an Amazon Fire stick or something similar that is super inexpensive for him. In the meantime, I am considering getting a hardware transcoder for the NAS. I don't know if I should get a graphics card that will fit internally or get an external transcoder to save the open slot for a 10Gbps network card later on. FYI, I have 1 Gbps up and down internet from my ISP. Everything is wired on the LAN with Gigabit ethernet switches, etc. Thanks!

  Upgrading my plex storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-23-2024, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a DS920+ and the plex app on that one has stopped working so I am getting a different devisen for my hard drives. While im getting a new one I wanted to get one with 5 or more bays for extra hard drives and wondered which NAS would be perfect for me.

Also wondered what hard drives you would recommend. I have 2 Toshiba 16 terabyte nas hard drives and wonder if you would recommend getting more of the same brand or if another one would work better?

  Upgrading from a DS920+
Posted by: angelsurfer - 04-23-2024, 01:21 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi All,

I am comtemplating which NAS to upgrade to from my DS920+.
I am currently stuck between the DS1621+ and the DS1821+.
I also saw the recent YouTube video about the DS423+ and it got me thinking if I should wait for a DS162(x)+ and/or a DS182(x)+ (Not sure if there will be a 24 series this year or not)
My concern with the newer models is that Synology may decide to lock the types of HDD that can used with the newer models.

Functionality wise, I will most likely continue to use the NAS as a VPN, Docker and Media server for the family.

I would like to get your opinions and advice of this matter.
Thank you.

Review for another China NAS MotherBoard
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-23-2024, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I was wondering if you could please review the below motherboard from Alibaba:

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Piesia-Motherboard-Intel12th-Generation-Alder-Lake_1601058921737.html?spm=a2700.galleryofferlist.normal_offer.d_title.66fa60dfLoxh7j

Seems like a really good motherboard with 8 sata connectors + 3 M.2 & a PCIe_X16 slot.

If possible, please also advise the right CPU for this as I would use my NAS for mostly media storage.
