  NAS Drives help
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-27-2024, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys,
First I want to start by saying that your videos have helped me a lot with making the choice of what hdd’s I should go with.
So to give you some background on my system, it’s a I3 7100 with 16 GB ram, also I have 4x Iron Wolf Pro 4TB drives. I’m going to be using this system only for Plex and storing family pictures and videos. And I was wondering if I should do RAID or even RAIDZ, or do something else. I would greatly appreciate it if you can help me make that choice easier! Thank you

  DS923+
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-26-2024, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hope alls well
Been impressed with your videos recently learning about NAS. My DS923+ arrived today. It's going to be located in my office which is in another room to my wifi router. I'm going to need to connect it wirelessly. My question is - do I get around this with plugging a USB wifi dongle into it and connecting it that way? I'd appreciate any advise you can give me - even down to which dongle (if it is a dongle I need) ~I'd need. The use of the NAS is for photo storage, some photos being 200mb's plus, so the heavier end of image weight.
My thanks in advance and keep up the good work.
Best
Harry

  WD PR4100
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-26-2024, 06:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I only use my WD PR4100 for PLEX in my home. I want it to be accessible on my home network only. I haven't activated WD cloud access hoping it would make it secure, but I can access PLEX away from home on my phone etc and this now makes me think others could infiltrate my NAS?
What setting could I change to stop ALL outside access including me as I don't need it?
Thanks very much. Love you YouTube videos.

Posted by: Enquiries - 04-25-2024, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am a freelance photographer. I have 5 external Hard drives of various sizes. I need to combine and clean up this mess and also provide a backup. I need to store, backup and retrieve photos.

My desktop computer is Windows 11, 64 Gb Ram, i9-1290, 2.4 GHz, 2 TB ssd drive, 1 TB scratch drive. I work on the present projects on the Desktop and then store them after I am done editing them.

Thanks for your help.

  NAS SA3600 inaccessible on network
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-25-2024, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My SA3600 becomes inaccessible on LAN yet it's on and running until I restart it, and most times when I restart, it gets stuck at some point in the boot process and just begins racing its fans. Is there a way I can be helped?

  Replacement for WD My Cloud
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-25-2024, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am a light user of WD My Cloud, which is now old and I'm looking to replace. I store tons of photos, tons of music, few videos, and many documents (docx/pdf/etc). I would like to be able to access all of that wherever I am-home/office/trip on my phone, laptop, PC, etc. I also once had a WD Live TV Hub which could slideshow my photos while playing folders/playlists of music from my music library-all stored on the WD Live TV Hub (including playlists & icons) and displayed/played on my TV.

I'd like to recreate that but cannot really do it with the MyCloud. I've been told Plex might be able to accomodate that, but with what hardware? Would Synology or Qnap work?

Thanks,
ned

Wink QNAP TVS-h1688X vs QNAP TL-D1600S via Minisforum MS-01
Posted by: Vicky - 04-24-2024, 09:39 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

10GbE NAS noob here Angel I'm looking to buy a system that will do double duty as a Proxmox homelab and a 4K Plex media server.

My initial thought was to use a Minisforum MS-01 with QNAP TL-D1600S. But the maximum theoretical speed would be 7.88 GB/s, and I expect the actual speed to be significantly less due to the TrueNAS SCALE software RAID on the MS-01.

The 2nd option I'm looking at is QNAP TVS-h1688X, which has a built in 10GbE NIC and NVMe cache. Its Xeon W-1250 CPU is not as powerful as the MS-01 i9-13900H, but it has potential for more RAM (and ECC RAM at that).

But since I have no experience with a 10GbE capable NAS, I'm not sure what actual throughput to expect. Do you think QNAP TVS-h1688X can deliver better read speeds than Minisforum MS-01 + QNAP TL-D1600S system?

low power storage and media solution
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-24-2024, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am looking for a solution for the following needs:
- I have a lot of files and media storage I want to save but also have available throughout my home
- main media are photos, music, and videos (DVD type movies, no bluray)
- I have various consumption stations which include: TV, 2 laptops, 1 desktop
- I want it available on LAN only, no WAN or remote
- expandability is important since I want to keep the system for at least 5y
- MOST IMPORTANT - I want a very low power consumption on idle. electricity prices are outrageous where I live

I don't mind building and maintaining a system but most DIY systems have higher power consumption than brand options.

I was thinking a Flashstor 6 since I see it has low power - 0.85W idle to 26W normal usage.

Thanks for the help.
