transcoding |

I am going to buy my first NAS and leaning toward Synology. Everyone talks about transcoding on the NAS, but why not just point a Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin server installed on a PC, ZImaboard, etc. to the NAS where your media is stored? The PC would need to be capable of transcoding of course. This does not hog the NAS CPU with transcoding. I am doing this now as I have a Win 10 PC with Drive Bender (no longer in business) where my media is stored and I have PLEX and EMBY server installed on another Win 10 PC. I have tried to get my Nvidea shield to be the server but have not been able to get it to connect to my storage on my media PC yet. I don't see any downside to to doing this. Maybe someone can tell what the downside to this could be. Thx for any input!!!!!!

NAS for Media/Gaming/Storage |

Hi,
I'm looking for a NAS that I can use as:
1. A Media Server, using Jellyfin prefferably or a similar free-open source product.
2. A Steam Library that I can move games to/from or just run them from entirely.
3. An emulation ROM directory
4. A General storage for photo's to replace Google Photos/iCloud.
From watching a few video's etc I've come to the conclusion that I likely want a 2.5gbe port, but beyond that I am confused and feel out of my depth. I can find things like the Asustor which has, apparently, been made with gaming in mind but whether this would be suitable for my other requirements I am unsure and other systems appear to do those better at the expense of gaming.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

I am following your Jonsbo N3 build video hoping to run TrueNAS.
Q: ERYING i9-13900HK 14C20T DDR5 say RAID not supported. Is this a problem.
Q: If no RAID is an issue then should I get i9-12900H 14C20T DDR4 which does support RAID? Bonus I have 2 x 8gb DD4 not in use.
Q: Should I just get UGREEN NASync DXP6800 Pro 6-Bay and hope TrueNAS will work OK?
The Build list so far:
- Undecided CPU MB bundle
- X540-T2 Intel Chipset PCIe x8 Dual Copper RJ45 10Gbps Port Ethernet Network Card PCIE-X8 X16
- M2 to SATA Adapter M.2 NGFF NVME to SATA3.0 Expansion Card B+M Key M-Key to 5/6 Ports SATA3.0 6Gbps Controller Riser for HDD SSD
- Thermalright SI-100 CPU Air Cooler, 6×6mm Heat Pipes, TL-E12 PWM Quiet Fan CPU Cooler with S-FDB V2.0 Bearing
- Gaming 600W Power Supply PC PSU, 80 Plus Bronze Certified,APFC Switching Power Supply
- CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) 5200MHz CL40 Intel XMP iCUE
- SATA-III Cable-0.5M, 6Pcs/Set-6Gbps-Sata HDD-SSD Data-Cable
Thank you for your help.

Noob with buyers remorse |

Hello, ive watched most of the videos on this channel and I pulled the trigger on my first ever NAS, it is not due to deliver until 30th April so I can cancel the order today and hopefully tomorrow without penalty.
I was choosing between the Asustor Flashtor 6 and the QNAP TS 264 8G
I pulled the trigger on the QNAP, it is 2 NVME and 2 HDD with N5095 CPU and 8GB RAM. I bought 1 Samsung nvme 970 pro plus 2TB. I had planned to buy another few HDD later once I understand a NAS more.
My future uses are currently unknown as I planned to discover them based on the capabilities or cool things I learn when using my NAS.
The main driver to look at NAS was iCloud wanting to move me from 2.99 a month to 9.99 for storage. Its just a principle thing, so I want to create my own alternative to iCloud for me and my wife. I am also interested in future to add one or two security cameras to my home without a subscription. I may use it to host a game server in the future for a small handful of people if that is possible. I will also give PLEX a go as currently I push files to apple TV via VLC so I think there might be a better media center than this.
The main reason I have remorse now is that I just watched the latest video: if the QNAP 464 after 2 years is still good and it sounds like many are moving away from Celeron or Pentium now but the QNAP I bought still has the quad-core Celeron.
The main uses will be personal, and many future uses might be unknown, I'm not very experienced or deep from a technical perspective on networking or storage, etc but I have the curiosity to learn, to a certain level but nothing too extreme.
Ideally, I would like to know if there is a similar priced option out there with a much better CPU
Ideally, I would like as secure and easy to use software as possible that doesn't require deep technical knowledge and be able to at least expose my iCloud alternative (whatever that might be) to the internet for my iphones
Thank in advance

Hi. I am about to setup my qnap ts-855x and I see QNAP are saying this for their ZFS system.. does it really work like tiered storage?

Hi all! I have been going back and forth on which NAS device I want to purchase and just can't seem to make up my mind. I'm tossed between the TerraMaster F2-212 and the Asustor Drivestor 2 AS1102T. I run Linux on my 2 machines and my partner uses a Mac mini. I'm also kind of wondering about the F2-210, because of its solid build. I'm only using it as a backup, no server apps will be used.
I see that the Terra Master distinctly mentioned that it supports Linux, but does that matter in my case?
What can you add to help me choose? I've been going back and forth for a week now and still can't decide. Thank you so much for any help you can give! Kyle

Western digital 4TB SD card |

Western digital will be releasing a 4TB Sd card in 2025, you can Google this…
My question, could you or would it be possible to populate a NAS with some sort of adapter with these SD cards?
What would the performance be like in a RAID
The price point may be cheaper than 4TB NVME drives… When compared to HDD’s there would be less noise, heat , power consumption.
I may be be completely of my rocker and this is the dumbest question…
Just finished watching the review of the 24TB Seagate and thought of this..
