Playing music from your Synology NAS to your Amazon Echo Speaker?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi
I read your very helpful guide to setting up My Media on a Synology NAS to improve the functionality of using Alexa to play content from the Synology Audio app.
My question is, can My Media play radio stations configured within User-defined radio on the Synology Audio app?
So I have a radio station named Atlantis FM. My goal would be to say "Alexa ask My Media to play Atlantis FM" and it would play.

Regards
Chris

  NAS Advice?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,

I am new to NAS storage. Our server just crashed and I found that we have two Drobo 5N's that were used for time machine back ups on a mac. We use backblaze for cloud back up and a 8TB usb drive for local back up. Would it be a good idea to use the older Drobo 5N's that we have and implement Backblaze B2 storage to backup the drobos and clone them to each other daily. Or is it time to replace those and is there a brand or set up you recommend? We would have about 20 users on a GB Ethernet network sharing files.

  Setup RAID on Synplogy DS920?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,

Watched your videos, excellent and much appreciated! I have learned a lot but am new to NAS. I have a pretty basic question but haven't seen it addressed. Currently I have just purchased a Synology DS920 and have 2 8TB Ironwolf NAS disks to install. I bought the 4 bay 920 for expansion at a later time. So setting this up with adding future disks in mind I am thinking of using SHR raid. My question is with SHR, A/ will I be getting total of 8TB like RAID 1 and B/ what happens when I fill up the 8TB disks, can I just add two more to bays 3 and 4 and they will appear as a new volume?

thanks, for your help!

  Buying used?

I have been looking 2 and 4 bay Synology on ebay for one model back, 918s or 718s. How do you calculate fair pricing for older and in most cases used hardware. For example, I wouldn't pay $600 for a 918+ when I can get a 920+ for $550. But a 918+ with 8GB ram and a couple of 4 TB drives seems like it might be a decent deal.

Thanks
Bob

Best PLEX Qnap NAS Today &/OR Wait for Something Coming Out Soon?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi NasCompares,

First off, thank you for all your contributions to the NAS community. I love your content and insight. You're rocking it!

We're looking for a NAS for our PLEX media server. I really want the HDMI option so I thought QNAP was best since their QTS software is so robust (I'm a Mac guy and wish I could do Synology, but they don't have HDMI and they're more expensive).

Currently I have a 4 bay Netgear NV+, that was outdated by the time I bought it 10 years ago (I didn't do enough research). I'd love to get transcoding as an option on my next NAS box and I want it to last 10 years without worry.

TS-X53 seems to be a good fit for me, and I'm trying to decide if it's better to go with 453 and add an expansion down the road or go all in on the 653 and get it all done now and not worry about it; being slightly less expensive than buying the expansion.

That said, is there anything coming out later this year I should wait for? Does the new QNAP gear come out during a certain quarter each year (like Apple for instance)? Does the rumor mill say that Synology is coming out with an HDMI version this year?

I have time to make this purchase and I want to get you the affiliate link. Let me know which gear you would recommend and if I should wait. Send a few affiliate links when you're ready.

Rock on My Friend,
Matt

  Replacement for Windows Home Server?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

So, I have a dead Acer H340 that had Win Home Server. I loved the software and it was as simple or complex as you wanted to make it. I was wanting to have a NAS that worked much like WHS. Here is what I would like it to do in order of priority. *Back up Windows 10 computer (Images as well as file History). I have had instances of computers crashing and losing Data. I just don't have time to reload programs and reset up. I have AutoCad and Revit for drafting which are huge files. *I would like backups to happen in the background in the evening so I don't slow computer during office hrs. *Cloud access would be preferred but not necessary. *Plex would be nice to stream movies I have on the hardrive of my Acer H340 TS video files *iTunes server is a nice to not a have to. I want a unit that can use low power when idle. I am open to a Windows 10 computer that I can just use and install 4 HardDrives and then use storage pools from windows but that may not be the most efficient use of a computer/energy use. Are there any suggestions that you can provide me with?
