  Synology NAS upgrade?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Good evening,

Brought my first nas synology DS218+ 2 bay with 2 x 4tb Ironwolf drives last March totally just for Plex to be honest. I love it but now need more storage. At the time price was important and would it work well in my living room with remote access whilst at work(nightshifts where I can watch plex). Thats why I went with the 2 bay as didn't want to have made a costly mistake.

It does work well I have fibre to cabinet internet so not the best but have no problems streaming remotely. I'm worried about noise with going to a 4 bay synology and the DS920+. Currently set up via ethernet to my router in the living room. Checking your videos I'm unsure should I wait to see if there's a new 4 bay is on the horizon or as your video says go for it? My plan is the DS920+ with 4x 4tb WD red drives as a slower spin rate?

What do you think?

Thanks

Keith

  Home NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have been looking for a while and think I have a good handle on the NAS basics, I want a NAS that I can store and access mainly photos and video from multiple devices. I plan on editing the files on the NAS as well, but no video streaming. I don't really trust the cloud and would like a local storage/backup solution. I have had several external hard drives go bad and I don't really think that is the best solution for me as it takes a routine to back things up as well. I started out looking at the 2-bay NAS but it seems to me that they just another "external drive" with a built-in backup. For a few bucks more I can get a 4-bay with a RAID 5 set up and have the same backup capabilities.

If you agree with all that, what do you think the best 4-bay NAS would be for me?

Thanks in advance... I love your website!

  Move from Google Photos?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I got the NAS to use as a bridge between my Windows 10 laptop machine (and its access to a VPN to access stuff on company internal network, AND my main box, with is Manjaro Linux. (I use it. I do not know it well.)

I want to move myself and my wife AWAY from Google Photos for a number of reasons.

Can we have an environment on our Android phones where shots will be automatically sent to the NAS, and then LINKABLE, so we can share photos or Albums with others?

Which app woudl be best for this please?

  NAS Advice?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello! Congratulations on your website and the good reviews on NAS. I wanted to consult your opinion or recommendation, based on the data provided. I want to get away from Google a bit more, try NextCloud, create my first home media server, etc. There are many options, but I am not sure which one will meet my needs. There are several NAS that do not allow updating the RAM memory, and I do not know if that could represent a problem in the long term. Maybe the Synology DS220 + can cover that, but it might be a bit out of my budget, adding the price of Hard Drives. A friend recommended the TerraMaster F2-210, with a Celeron CPU that I do not know if it can be a reliable option (because of the bad reputation that these CPUs bring about their low performance). On the other hand there is the Synology DS120j, but as I think it happens with all the J series models, the RAM memory is quite limited and does not allow to increase it. I would not like to buy something that in the short term falls short and, I do not know, after a year I have to replace the NAS because the performance is not good. Sorry for the long text, and possible bad English. Regards, and thank you very much.

  NAS for 2 users?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi Guys,

I've really enjoyed your channel - watching over 10hours of videos of Synology vs QNAP - entertaining indeed!

I have a music / audio post production company with 2 users (10TB of data between us) needing to connect to a NAS for backup and transfer of files between each computer. Running audio / Music projects from the NAS would also be great (simultaneous playback of 50+audio tracks @ 44.1kHz 24bit wav files +H.264 video files)

Being a Mac user the Synology 920+ (4 x 8tb drives) is tempting also price wise. But should I be concerned with 1GB ethernet? Or should I go for 10GB ethernet? Our 2018 MacMini's do support 10GBE.

Any suggestions would be very welcomed indeed!

Best,

DamoAudio

  Choosing a NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hey there!

I'm looking into getting a NAS but have been overwhelmed with the costs and options.
I'm looking for something that can run Home Assistant (with Zigbee and Z Wave USBs attached), a Plex Server for music, photos, and some movies, and to work as an NVR to hold footage for a week or two at 720p from 3 cameras.

What would be the minimum requirements I'd be looking for to achieve this and any advice in general?

Thanks!
