I have 1515+ for home use I like it very much and I want to upgrade because I'm using ds video for my movie and tv show , i have family members connecting on my server to watch some movie and tv shows i can see the CPU goes up from transcoding so its time for upgrade and 5 bay is small now i need 6+ and 2 SSD for cash so that's why I'm thinking of ds3617xs like you said it rooooow power I'm trying to reach 50+ online user for videos 1080p and 720p with no problems

Need some advice for buying a new model. I currently own a DS412+ (And for a while it doesn't fill my needs). I manly use this to plex (since not much power for more in idle memory at leat at 70% due to some tools running and only having 2GB), have around 5 users that use plex a lot, but I also use a lot for data backup and use the Synology Drive for work and college, want the ability to create some VMs for some future projects. Also the need to upgrade storage in the future


I have look for the DS1520+ due to the hardware transcoding ability.

But also looking for the DS1621/DS1821 due to their storage upgrade capabilities in the future.

My biggest concern is regarding the 8GB memory on DS1520+ (if I expand with 2DX517) and the hw transcoding capability vs the AMD processor.

Looking for a little help finding a new NAS (maybe a lot of help)


I currently have a home made system using open zfs in a 4u rack case with 12x 8gb drives.
It works fine but I am not strong with linux and it can be confusing for me. Mainly when I want to change things I have to re-learn everything because I already forgot it.


I have had a couple of Drobo's in the past and like them but the seem to be not popular/bad support/maybe the company is close to going out of business. I don't know just don't seem well supported.


I would like at least a 12 drive unit since that is what I already have. I have all my dvd's and blu-rays backed up on to HD's along with decades of home movies and 3 generations worth of photos oh yes and my cd music collection.


I have a bunch of old computers with system a drive and data drive(s) I am thinking going forward I will just build computers with 1 system drive and use the nas for all data not just media storage. (de-duping might help here)


I guess I would prefer a rack mounted system but I don't have a problem with putting a shelf in my rack and a desktop model on it.


I have a 10g switch and want 10g either onboard or with a NIC.
If NIC I think 2 pcie slots would be desirable, because I'm thinking of adding m.2


I am currently looking at Synology and Qnap but I am open to others if suggested. I am currently in data overload and getting confused.


Not sure which is better btrfs or zfs (Quts hero) ???
If a 12gb drive with 6gb of data goes down how low will it take to rebuild under each system ? Estimate.


Qnap need a system space so I either loose 2 of the 12 hard drives or need a unit with additional 2.5” ssd slots or the m.2 add in card. (but I see on the Qnap web site that it has 5gb dual boot os protection flash memory) **What is this for**. Where as Synology keeps it system spread over all drives.


I am not sure if I would benefit from ssd or m.2 cache ???


I like SHR-2 (because of Drobo) but it seems to be being phased out or not available on ½ of their machines.


I like raid-6 because I've read some horror stories about rebuilding a raid-5 after loosing one drive the system failing because of the heavy usage the rebuilding puts on the remaining 4 drives.


I was thinking about starting with 4x 12Tb drives and increasing with additional 12Tb drives as time goes on.

From what I understand or think I understand Synology and btrfs would allow me to increase my raid 1 drive at a time by expanding the storage pool capacity.
I think this cannot be done with QTS Hero / zfs ?????????? Am I right that with zfs I can only increase capacity is by starting over with 5 drives then starting over with 6 drives and so on or add a second vdev the smallest being a 2 disk raid1.
This makes me confused and I can't figure out which is better.


Do I need cache ??? How much under each system ???


Plex: I haven't used plex I just go to my movies folder find the one I want and then cast to device (tv).
Watching your videos you seem to prefer Qnap for plex.


Photos: Watching your videos I like Synology for the information available on each photo and the facial recognition seem like it might be better. Does Synology have a world map where photos were taken ????? like Qmaggie.


I don't like the Synology units that can only use propriety Synology drives only (even if they are the best I don't like to be forced to use them) But all the new models use them and my guess is that this will continue in the future. Do I want an older model that will be discontinued sooner ??????????

Hi, love the videos, thank you for what you do! I need help in a bit more direction of what to purchase. Currently, I have a DS1513+ (purchased when it first came out) I put 5 x 3TB WD Green Drives (5400rpm). I was complete newbie to the NAS world. My Drobo had died so I just purchased the first thing that was recommended to me by friends. It’s setup in SHR-2 configuration. After 7 years, it is 95% filled, the RAM was upgraded at time of purchase. Everything is sluggish. I am beginning to receive emails of bad sectors. I figured it was time to upgrade. I was initially leaning towards the RS1221+ (I have a rack in the closet) but the video you posted gave me lots to think about spending the money elsewhere. I started looking at the DS1821+, I was debating of starting fresh with either 6TB or 8TB drives (in an SHR-2) configuration. Now after watching lots of videos, I am not sure what to buy (or maybe the DS1621+)?

Current uses for our NAS: it is the master archive of our home/home office/family/friends for the last decade. I have a backup to the cloud for the important things and a passport drive for the utmost emergency items (in case of death, etc). Lots of multimedia creation happens in the house, audio recordings, editing, photography sessions, we haven’t really focused on video at all. Mainly lots of audio and photos. Plex as well from time to time, not huge. The DS1513+ will be repurposed for either backup or anything else that I can mess around with.

Lastly, I have Unifi Router, Access Points, and PoE switch in the house. Main computer is the M1 Mac Mini. 2 Macbook Pros, and a handful of iPads, iPhones. All of which ultimately connect to the NAS and backup to it as well.

Recommendation for which Synology NAS?
How much would I benefit from a RAM or NVME upgrade?
Would you go with 6TB drives or 8TB drives? (I have a bad habit of buying all drives in one shot versus adding as I need)

First of all I would like thank you very much for all your very useful videos. I've just finished setting up my QNAP TVS 1282T3 with 2 iMacs via thunderbolt. Now I want to buy a NAS for offsite backup. My NAS is filled with 8x8TB drives. What NAS would you recommend? I was looking at the TS-832PX, would that be smart? Also I'd like to buy a battery for my current NAS. What would you recommend?

My DS415+ has just suffered Intel C200 problem wished I'd have known about that before it happened.
Gave me opportunity to try DSM 7. But now realise dsm7 changes the actual NAS so I can't factory reset NAS.
Rob, please advise procedure to revert NAS back to DSM 6.2

My problem is to decrease power consumption .
Many video files I have in 720p format and some 1080p and I want to watch 4 devices , tv , tablet , phone and pc.
I thought about certain NAS Austor AS-6602T,qnap TS-453D and syynology DS720+.

Hi, I don't know if you can help me. I'm in the US, thinking about constructing a family cloud. I have some experience with NAS (WD My Cloud paired with Sonos to listen to my music library), but am now thinking of something more ambitious. I'd like to put music, photos, and home videos on a NAS which can be read to and written to by family members around the country (roughly 4 or 5). I have probably 2 TB of content now, and it will of course grow. Currently I organize my music in iTunes and my photos in Picasa (notwithstanding the fact that it is no longer supported!). Of course, happy switch away from either iTunes or Picasa (PLEX? My son likes it).

Is this something that can be done at reasonable cost and with reasonable technical skill?
