QNAP / Synology / Others? |

Hi, I currently have a QNAP TS412, (probably 10/ 15 years old, all I know is I bought it brand new a long time ago..!), with 2 x Ironwolf 6tb HDD's, (relatively new), and it is working fine, however, it is showing its age with the apps that are available. I am considering upgrading to a new NAS and I have a couple of questions and would like to take your advice please? I have view your great Youtube videos and they are extremely helpful, however, I am having difficulties committing to one specific NAS, I am wavering between a QNAP TS453D or a Synology 920+, then I have just viewed a video on TrueNAS..!!Aarrggh Help, please?
My first question being, are my HDD's, (that are in a RAID configuration in my QNAP where they are mirrored, not too sure which RAID it is?), swappable between QNAP and Synology?
2nd question, I wish to use the NAS for storing family photos, (I would say over 10k and ever increasing), family videos, (current most are 1080p, however, I do have a few 4k and going forward they will all be recorded in 4k), films, (again most are 1080p, however, I do have a few 4k and going forward most will be 4k, PLEX compatible?), and the new NAS will have to be good enough to send 4k, (wifi preferably if possible), to our new smart TV, also, be able for other family members at different locations to view these photos, videos and films.
I like the idea of being able to edit our family videos on a NAS, however, this is not imperative.
The face recognition, to help aid and assist in cataloguing / tagging would be a great benefit to me also.
£600 is towards the top end of my budget, however, a little more I could probably manage to find, if for example a upgrade to RAM would be greatly beneficial.
Which NAS device do you believe would suit my needs best?
Please, please help me..? Thank you in advance. Stay safe and take care, Darren

Hi
I currently have:
A WRT1900ACS router - Notes: Only supports SMB
2 * Western Digital 4 TB SATA 3.5 Hard Drive - Blacks
I am looking for a 4 bay NAS that I can plug into my router and achieve REAL read/write speeds of ~ 300-600 Mbps+. To achieve this I suspect I'd want to be looking at RAID 5.
This is for home usage and I'd like to be able to dump my steam games on this. I'd also like to be able to expand when I can afford 4*(8/10/16/whatever TB) hard drives
First is this possible? Second What's the cheapest NAS + HD combo that'd be able to achieve the speeds I'm looking for?

NAS advices? |

Hi,
I'm planning to buy my first NAS for a home usage. The main purpose is keeping safe all personal files, photos, videos, documents and also save / download music and movies.
I was waiting to see if an updated version of Synology DS218 (value series) / DS218play is going to be released, but in the end I'm starting to look at DS220+.
The main reasons are:
1. it's newer (and I don' want to wait a new version of DS218play)
2. it's more powerful and since I'd like to keep it for some years but also I could require some transcoding, it could be nice to have something good and with an upgradeable RAM.
3. I'm not sure, but I don't exclude that I could start to use/play with virtual machines in the future....but this is just an idea.
I was thinking about 2 x IronWolf 6TB (ST6000VN001). Is it a good idea? I wanted to buy the WD60EFRX (which should be CMR according to WD) but they don't appear in the Synology compatibility list.
I wanted to ask you what you think about these choices.
I also need another suggestion: my NAS place is in the same room of the routing, but unfortunately not in a place where I can ever hope to have an ethernet cable.
I studied a lot about powerline adapters and wifi access points (in client mode), but I'm not able to decide. I was thinking about this TP-Link TL-PA7017 (for powerline) or about TP-Link RE450 (for the access point). Which is the best option?
Thank you!
Luca

DS920+ 20GB RAM Unofficial Upgrade? |

I''d like to ask the following,
I've seen the claims for the 20GB RAM (unofficial) upgrade for DS920+. This is indeed awesome news, but my question is the following.
The DS920+ is powered by an Intel® Celeron® J4125 Processor, and in the official Intel page for the processor, they declare that the processor supports 8GB Maximum RAM.
How is it possible for the 20GB (4+16) to be usable?
Thank you!

Priorities in order:
1. Backup
2. Private Cloud (esp photos)
3. Ease of use for others than myself
4. Possibly some techie lab scenarios like test vm hypervisor environments.
5. Tech support from Manufacturer.

Recommendation for NAS for remote backup of DS1621xs+ only.? |

Hi Rob,
First I would like to say that I find your videos and other online material well thought out and extremely useful. Without it I doubt I would have gotten into NAS storage at all. Thanks!
I ended up buying a DS1621xs+ (in no small part because of your review). I am extremely happy with it.
In these times of COVID I am working from home but I want to set up a solid remote (this will be at our lab/office – a few miles away) backup for the DS1621xs+.
After the initial backup on the local network I would move the backup machine to the office and schedule a backup once a day, late at night (over a VPN connection).
I will not be using that NAS for anything except the backup. Can you recommend a Synology NAS for that?
Thanks, all the best and stay healthy,
Hanan
