QNAP NAS? |

Hi there,
I am looking for some advice on the new QNAP TS-h973AX-32G. I am a video editor and looking for a convenient way to store all my footage and have easy access to everything all the time. I will need to edit footage off the NAS every now and then. This will mainly be to make edits using old footage etc, and transferring new footage to so we can have always on access to it. I will be running it in some kind or raid configuration which I have not decided yet as I am not sure it I will be on the new ZFS system or not, so you can advise on this to please. I will also be running Plex on this NAS.
I was initially looking at the TVS-872XT-i5-16G, but obviously the price difference is quite significant. Are you able to tell me if it is worth spending the extra on the TVS-872XT-i5-16G vs getting the TS-h973AX-32G. Also what is your opinion on their new QUTS system and ZFS? Or do I rather save up some extra cash and rather go for the TVS-h1288X-W1250-16G. Its almost like there is too many options, and its confusing. At the moment I will only be editing through a 1GBE cable until I am able to upgrade everything to 10GBE. I understand both the TVS-872XT-i5-16G & TVS-h1288X-W1250-16G have thunderbolt ports but I probably would not be able to make full use of these purely due to where I would be placing the NAS & due to the fact that there will be 2 editors who need access to it. So having it connected to the network is the best option. I am heavily leaning towards the TS-h973AX-32G, but my main reasoning is the price which is very achievable. however if you feel it would be better to spend the extra cash then I will have to wait a while before I do anything, which obviously is not an ideal situation.
Storage size wise, I will probably use 16TB drives and start off with the minimum required depending on raid config, and get more as time goes on.
I think I have covered all my needs but if you feel you need more info to give your advice then just let me know.
Thanks so much for your assistance, I really do appreciate it.
Kind regards

Intent to upgrade . currently have 2TB on the DS214 which is almost full . If i were to upgrade to either one of above two synology NAS
can i run both as independent NAS on the same network with different online access
and if that is not possible , how to migrate data from the 214se to new NAS - ie can the HDD from the 214 se be included in one of the bays on the new NAS .
please advise

Which NAS to choose from? |

Hi, I am looking for a good NAS to store my photos and music that totals to 8TB already and increasing. I am currently looking between the Asustor AS6404T and the Synology DS420. Since it is my very first time to purchase and eventually own a NAS, I am confused which would be the best NAS to purchase. I find the Synology more expensive and memory is expandable up to 6gb. As for the Asustor AS6404 is cheaper and memory is expandable or it already comes with an 8gb memory. Since this is my first time to purchase a NAS, I would prefer the one with more flexibility in terms of usage and memory that I find on the Asustor. I also do not have any idea which is better between Synology or Asustor. Thank you very much for your time. I hope I asked the right questions.

How to choose? |

Hello,
First of all, thank you for your site and your help section! I must admit that it's a very practical thing for novices like me!
In fact, I would like to have your opinion on a choice I have to make (if you have other suggestions, I'm open to it...!).
I work with images and video. I'm currently shooting on Mac. My 2011 iMac 27" only offers Thunderbolt 1, USB 2, FireWire 800 and Ethernet GB.
I'm looking for a storage and backup solution that offers me the best possible throughput with my current configuration, but that would also be possible if I were to change computers and thus change to newer and more powerful connections.
I still don't know if I will do Raid 1 or Raid 0 with a backup application for certain folders only.
I'm not interested in sharing files with several machines or remotely.
My choice for the moment is the LaCIE 2big Dock Thunderbolt 3 or the TerraMaster TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus.
What do you think about it?
Thanks again for your advice and your time!
With kind regards,

Hi we are a family of 6 ( 4 young children) Not very computer savvy in regards to what makes them tick.
We take loads of photos of our young family from our phones and eventually download them to an external hard drive on our computer. I broke my phone last year and have lost all photos of our youngest boys 1st birthday. In an ideal world i would like to be able to instantly back up what's on our computer, and save photos to a hard drive remotely for both me and my wife (maybe from 3 to 4 devices), be able to choose what photos I save easily, be able to access these same photos easily remotely if they're not already on our phone/ computer ect, and for us both to be able to easily access them. Most importantly, I'd like to never lose any more precious photos again so once they're saved I would like them to stay saved. I also have a music collection somewhere? That I need to recover from our computer/Iplayer that I would like on there, but this is a nice-to-have so that I can play them in my car!
Thanks for any help and advice in advance.
Regards Chris

New QNAP releases in 2021? |

I'm considering the QNAP TVS-473e for a combination storage, surveillance, etc solution. I think it was released in 2017, but a lot has changed since then. Do you have an idea how long QNAP waits before refreshing a product? Do you foresee any new release from QNAP this year that would be a step up from the TVS-473.
I'm particularly interested in a 4-5 bay NAS. I have a 2-bay QNAP now and have some familiarity, so QNAP would be my first choice over other brands.

Server Migration? |

I have been using a DS1019+ for almost a year now as a family Plex server. After a while, I had to get an expansion unit. Both the Ds1019+ and the expansion unit are filled with 12TB hard drives so I am looking to upgrade the server. I am looking into building my own custom server and loading Xpenology onto it. The only issue is finding a case with enough hard drive bays ideally I am looking for something like 15 bays. My server rack has a short depth so it's roughly 20in deep or so. Is it possible to use 2 smaller rack-mounted cases with one system? I have looked at some SAN (fibre channel storage) cases that have lots of hard drive bays but I don't really understand them.

Synology Drive VS Map Drive? |

I purchased a Synology DS920+ in Span.com last year for a small office set up but we use heavy and demanding files (3D models with lots or referenced files, etc). In the local network we use a LAN connection with our shared folders as Map Drive connection (via Synology assistant) and all works really good.
The question is the following:
Sometimes we need to work out of the network. I tested Synology Drive and overall works good (with some programs working directly form the Drive there are some problems when saving, but not a major issue). One option would be to move all the shared folders to Synology Drive, but when working from the network (most of the time), it will be much faster to work directly with the Map Drive connection. Is it a way to synchronise Synology Drive with a Shared folder located also in the NAS, so we can benefit of both systems? Would you recommend another system?
Many thanks in advance for your support and all your videos, they help a lot!
