  Which NAS for Color grading?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi!

I'm a colorist and I want to buy a storage solution that I can edit direct out of.

So, right out of the bat: 10gbe is necessary
I work mostly with ProRes 4444 media, ocasionally RED ARRI Raw media or DPX image sequences all ranging from 1080p up to 6k.
I'm looking for something that can feed all that in realtime to my workstation.

I'm currently interested in the Synology ds1621xs+ or ds1821+, however I don't know if these models would be able to meet my needs and I can't decide between the two.

Thanks for your help I hope I provided you with all the necessary information.

Best regards

  Qnap TS-453D?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Qnap = 2x Ram 8GB or 1 Ram 16GB?

I bought this unit (TS-453D) and I am curious if I should install two (2) new 8GB RAM to add 16GB or is it better to install a single 16GB RAM ?

Thanks in advance

  NAS Advice?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there,

Love the work and videos! I finally at the point to buy NAS for my small business which uses graphics a lot. Architecture.

My thinking has been the DS1520+ plus or the DS620 Slim( I really love the compact form factor). I will be using the full DSM software for Mail, etc. You mentioned Slim has almost all the software as DS1520+ but not sure what software is missing on the slim. I love the small factor but am looking to be pragmatic for the business. Expandilility be nice but not essential at this point as just keen to get onto the NAS SYnology system and can review upgrades in a few years.

So my question fundamentally is, when is the SMB updates due in your opinion? I have mainly waiting for the 10 Gigabit LAN port upgrades across the board. Unclear on why the 1GB is still there. Worth waiting or just get stuck in now on your suggestions re-above comments?

Look forward to your feedback.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards,

Grant

  NAS Server?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,

Thanks for your great review videos, really enjoyable.

I'm trying to determine what NAS server is best for my small business.

At the moment I am working from home, but we have a small office for 3-4 employees.

Our company is an Architecture and Geospatial consultancy, and we work with big files such as CAD, 3D and photoshop files.

We rarely use any media or video data.

Recently we have been dealing with Point cloud files that come from our survey equipment, and these can be around 2-10 GB in size.

We currently have a WD My Cloud NAS server, but need an additional collaborative server for more of our data storage. It's important we can access remotely also.

I cannot decide between the below:

- Synology DS718+
- WD my cloud ex4100
- QNAP TS-431p

Would you mind advising which would be acceptable?

Thank you for your support.

  NAS Buyer?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I'm a Plex head. I've made the gaffe of trying to run my Plex through my (very decent spec) PC by stuffing it with big hard drives. It's a pain in the arse to be honest. Most of my media is 4K movies with Dolby Atmos sound. At the moment, I'm suffering from buffering and I have to leave my PC on for far longer than I'd like to. I'd like a QNAP TVS872XT (your fault). Start off with maybe 3 big drives and add more as I need to. When it comes to RAID, can you keep adding drives and the RAID will sort itself out? Or is it more complicated than that? If you have a video on that very subject by all means link me in. I've gone through about 30 of your vids so far, excellent stuff.

  Which NAS Setup Guide?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Howdy from the Lone Star State,
I found (so far) three NAS Setup Guides you've created. Trying to figure out which one I should watch to get my DS1621+ up and running.
A bit confusing seeing so many of the same guides in your channel. Guidance appreciated!
Thanks

  Decision checklist?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

We are OSX and iOS people family, and need to offload from the big free cloud place. Reasons for NAS:

#1 Photos (family, places, things, events, facial recognition)
#2 Migration of Personal Cloud Documents
#3 Scan important files from cabinet that never would never consider to be on the cloud
#4 Quicktime Screen Video recordings
#5 The occasional tv show for short term storage and playback
#6 Maybe security video capture

Looking for intelligent suggestion on which NAS to choose among QNAP and Synology or other. Or if you have a decision tool like a form or spreadsheet that ranks recommendations based on your preferences and intended use?
