  Dual location NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am looking for a NAS-solution.
I like models with HDMI and remote control for media player
For redundancy I want one NAS in each of my homes, and set up mirroring between the two.
Only mirror folder containing private photos and other important documents.
Manually/automatically share capacity for less important, like movies and music.
service to play music, on network attached audio devices supporting DLNA

Maybe: 2×QNAP TS-251+ (or TS-451+), maybe 4 bay for future expansion.

Most importantly I want to store photos and documents with redundant location. I have seen many videos about different RAID, for performance and/or redundancy. RAID 1 is good against general disk failure, but not as good if failure is caused by fire.

  Help Choosing ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

As a videographer, I need the ability to transfer videos from an SD card to a storage device where I can directly edit, stream, store and back up ~ 3-5 videos per week that are 20-30 mins in length at 1080p resolution so that I can publish and stream the resulting videos without sharing my content with public cloud or social media providers. My current network environment is Netgear prosafe gigabit switches (jgs524) , Cat 5

Rack Mountable , Speed , reliability and smooth streaming are very important to me.

~$2k budget

Please advise on the optimal NAS solution for this use case.

QNAP NAS for plex & GPUs?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Thank you for your recent review of the QNAP TVS-h1288X. I still have some questions that I've posted to the QNAP forum for answers.

I've read through a number of posts on the QNAP forum as well as on the Plex forums to find out recommendations and suggestions on which graphics card to use with the TVS-872XT.

On the Plex forums they point out you need Plex Media Server v1.15.1.791 or newer ( https://support.plex.tv/articles/115002178853-using-hardware-accelerated-streaming/ ). In that article there's also a link to a google doc that shows a hardware compatibility sheet ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MfYoJkiwSqCXg8cm5-Ac4oOLPRtCkgUxU0jdj3tmMPc/ ). Finally as part of that article Plex points users to a QNAP page that show compatibility with the GPGPU and NVidia ( https://www.qnap.com/en-us/compatibility/?device_category=gpgpu&brand=nvidia ). On this QNAP page, QNAP recommends the Nvidia- Quadro RTX 6000.

The TVS-872XT has 2 x M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 x2 slots and, I've researched that there's only one PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot, the other is a x4. Looking at the price of the recommended card I find it sort of unbelievable that there are no other recommended NVidia cards. I saw in the forum that someone had connected a Nvidia Quadro P620 to a QNAP TVS-872XT NAS ( https://gist.github.com/weshofmann/620b924cde5dd498880e9315e48e793b ) so I see that it's possible to not spend nearly $3500 on a video card for a NAS.

What have sort of GPUs have you connected to a TVS-872XT? Have you had success with Plex transcoding the media? How "loud" does the QNAP unit get when the GPU is transcoding (fans blowing)?

I also would like to know if you've had any experience with this sort of setup and then watching content with subtitles enabled (some of us are hard of hearing). I've found that when subtitles are enabled, more processing is done by the CPU to stream and support subtitles and then buffering and jittering occurs.

As a final note, has have you setup a unit like this and used the watch together feature from Plex ( https://support.plex.tv/articles/watch-together/ ), how about with subtitles?

One final note, I recently saw on intel's page that the
i5-8400T chip in the TVS-872xt is discontinued. I'm looking to "future proof" as much as possible having to reinvest in this NAS.

Best,

Michel

  Home rack NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, I was wondering what NAS you would recommend as a home media storage device which has a short depth and fits in a rack. I don't need drives, just the physical unit itself.

Thank you, Peter

  Rs818+ vs ds720+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi

If it comes to synology, seems like you are the one to ask! Great comparisons! However i am unsure what to buy.
I have a Ds215j in Place with 2*3TB Wd red

I am looking for an upgrade. Since i have a small rack at home the rackversions seem nice, but expensive.

I have now the opportunity to buy a used RS818+ without drives for around 550.- swiss francs.

A empty ds720+ costs me new about 450 swiss francs.

I use the nas for data storage and for streaming home made fotos amd movies ro my tv via apple tv.
Also for synching/backup my files to dropbox automatically.

Can you tell me with which one of the above you would go?
Would you buy new Harddroves or just transfer the current ones into the new nas?

Thanks a lot
Roger
