Good day,
I want to find out if the hard drive in the Synology BeeStation is encrypted. In other words, if someone were to physically access the device, open it up, and remove the hard drive, would they be able to read or access the data stored on it? Or is the data protected and inaccessible due to encryption?
Best regards,
Ivan

Slowly uploading data, specifically TIF photos. When I try to view the TIF photo, I get a black screen. How can I view the images from the NAS? It supports the viewing of JPG images.

My Qnap TS-653 pro fitted with 6x 6Tb WD red Drives recently crashed (possibly after auto update during night) and is now stuck in system booting mode. I am waiting to do the 100 ohm resister mod to see whether that recovers system!. I was looking at getting another nas enclosure which i could just slot my existing drives into so as to recover my data. If this is possible, please can you suggest a suitable NAS. I think my exiting drives are in raid 5 (losing 1 drive to parity?) Thanks in advance. Steve

I have about 10 TB of Movies on PC setup as PMS. I want to set up dedicated NAS PMS. I have been looking at Synology DS 423+, QNAP TS-464 8G and Terramaster F4-423 as options with 2 Seagate Iron Wolf Pro HDDs (16-22 TB) set up in RAID 1 leaving to Bays for future expansion. I would probably upgrade RAM and install 2- 1TB NVME drives at initial setup to maximize performance and future-proof NAS. I have about 10 people using the PMS on and off (some on LAN and other externally) I try to set up media for direct stream but notice transcoding often occurs as media is played. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Need Advice on Expanding Synology DS718+ Storage |

Hey NAS Compares team,
I’m a power user with a Synology DS718+ primarily used for Plex streaming and backing up computers. Running out of space and looking to add at least 2TB in the near term. Here’s my current setup and questions:
Current Setup:
Drives: 2x WD40FFRX-68N32N0, 3.6 TB each
Used Capacity: 96% (3.4 TB of 3.5 TB)
RAM: 16 GB
CPU: Intel Celeron J3455, Quad-core 1.5 GHz
Questions:
How outdated is my current setup? Should I upgrade? If so, to what?
Is adding a Synology Expansion Unit DX517 worth it?
Considering adding a Crucial MX500 1TB SSD cache. Is this a good choice or are there better options? What improvements will it bring?
What RAID configuration would you recommend for performance and cost?
Thanks for the help!

Synology #2 purchase--help |

Currently have a DS920+ and it's working great with 4-18TB drives. I NEED a backup solution though as I'm adding films that are UHD (about 50-90 gigs) and I'm at about 25% that's not currently backed up. After watching/reading a bunch of your stuff (and other sites), I think I've come to the conclusion that instead of buying a Synology DX517 to use as backup--I'd buy another Syn NAS for that. However, I share my Plex library with family and a couple of friends, SO I'd use the 920+ as a transcoding NAS/backup and a newer 923+ as a local Plex server/backup that wouldn't need transcoding (the 923+ has a Rizen) as I'm using an Apple TV and I've connected the NAS to it with Ethernet. I would hope that I could use the 923+ locally and still get my 4K films to play without issues. I hate that Syn can't improve their current lineup, but I'm more comfortable with their GUI. Would this be the way to go for my use case? I need to move soon as I'm nervous about my lack of backups.

SSD Cache Crash |

While traveling, I got a message saying first that I had checksum errors. Then I received a message saying my Volume 1 had gone to Read Only mode and then, lastly I got a message saying that my SSD Cache had crashed. I'm not sure what's going on and since I'm still traveling, I just shut my NAS down. My question is though, do you think the root cause of my problem is the SSD cache? If so, can I just go to the Storage section and "deactivate" the SSD cache? I have two 500GB NVMe SSDs installed in a Synology DS1522+ NAS which is about 6 months old. I am a home user and, after watching your video on SSD caching, the NVMe was likely overkill. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Skip

Is Asustor Lockerstor AS6704T enough for me? |

Hello everyone,
My question is about Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen2 (AS6704T), from what I see it should do everything I want.
I run Plex on my own PC's last 8 years with lifetime PlexPass, I have around 12GB content. All content is 1080p, and I am not planning to use 4K.
I use NZBGet, Sonarr, CouchPotato and Tatulli, I do run Home Assistant on a dedicated NUC, I am not planning to move Home Assistant on NAS, but you never know in the future.
NAS will be used mostly for Plex and document back-ups.
I want 4x 18TB HDD's, two M.2 drives and I have no intention to go higher than 2.5Gbps any soon.
My questions are:
- Can AS6704T encode at least 2x 1080P high bitrate files and subtitles simultaneously to 480p.
- My budget is around €700 for NAS, is there a better or cheaper options out there?
- Gen3 Lockerstor should be announced at the end of 2024, should I wait?
Thanks in advance!

I currently have 2x WD DC530's (14TB) in my loungeroom nas. Sure they are a bit noisy, but I like the reassuring clunk (of quality) they make. Should I stick to WD DC530's when expanding, or is it ok to pick another brand? Also, is it possible to go from raid 5 to SHR ??
Cheers
OZJohnno
