Drobo Help Needed! |

Hi - I know that Drobo is no more and my Drobo 5N2 is dead. The fan runs but no lights (including the power light) come on. I am thinking there is a 5V regulator somewhere which has failed. The backup battery also shows some signs of damage but that is NLA.
Long term I'd like to learn more here and buy another current backup solution - possibly a QNAP or Synology. Short term I would like to repair this Drobo. With the disappearance of Drobo and their community support forums, what have Drobo users found is the best support forum to work through problems, share sources of supply and repair techniques?

Hello,
My name is Taylor. I've watched many of your videos an youtube and am a big fan! I'm emailing in hopes of learning from you directly. I’m currently a full time firefighter. We spend our down time at the station watching tv shows and movies. Some of the guys were complaining about all the streaming services we subscribe to. I told them I would look into alternatives. That’s when I discovered Plex and decided I wanted to learn how to host my own media server to help out the guys at the station and possibly friends and family in the future. In my search for knowledge, I went down a rabbit hole learning about different server configurations. This led me to your channel which was impressive and overwhelming seeing as how I have little to no knowledge of most of the things you talk about in your videos. I consider myself a quick learner but have never taken the time to learn these things before. If you are interested, I would love to learn from you. Please let me know if this can be

And of cause trun it off, the killjob when new files added.

QNAP 453D - Best Config for Network Speed |

Hi, I have a TS-453D, largely based on the Reviews of NasCompares, love your work. Love the unit also. I have purchased and installed a QNAP QM2 CARD, DUAL M.2 PCIe SSD, 10GBASE-T(1) EXPANSION CARD, Low Profile Bracket, fully aware of the limitations of the card, with respect to PCie limits on device with that card. I have 4 HDD installed and 2 nvme on the QM2 card. I have now finally got a 10GBASE-T home network. Is there anyway I can use the now unused dua 2.5 ports to boost throughput to network. From what I’ve read, it seems link aggregation only works with Nic’s of the same speed. Would I get better speeds dumping the QM2 10gbe, and getting dual 2.5 for the PCIE slot, then link aggregation the resulting 4 2.5gbe ports? I know this isn’t earth shattering, but I’m a tinkerer, and don’t want to have to fork out for a new NAS (wife won’t let me). Thanks in advance.

Will a large HDD cache 256mb vs 128mb, make a difference in a NAS that is just for media streaming? There is a significant price difference. Also, is the WDDA 3yr warning still an issue? First the SMR issue now this. What is your opinion of WD as a company? Thanx for your time and attention.

Buying first NAS |

Hi there,
Long time follower and subscriber, been looking at getting a NAS for far too long now.
Will be mainly using it at home with Plex for videos so on my local network. Occasionally will be streamed to remote devices but not primary use case.
Majority of files will be 4k hdr or Dolby vision etc or highest quality and sound I can achieve is my primary goal. I’m keeping an eye on 2nd hand markets for any deals but I think I need to narrow my selection down first. At present my files are on an external HDD at 8TB but this will expand as many of the files need updating to latest/higher quality so hence guessing around 20TB to start with for storage. Happy to compromise on software if I’m getting better hardware my partner is very tech savvy and I’m getting a lot better so the performance and quality of the media is the priority if I need to struggle a bit more in set up that’s ok.
Thanks so much
Oli

NAS with PLEX for h.265 |

Dear sir,
Hello and thank you for all your video and posts out there, they've been very helpful. I am in a bit of a pickle and would like your personal opinion in a matter, if you feel like sharing!
Present setup
Synology NAS DS420j (Realtek RTD1296) with 1GB
Mostly used for PLEX with 90% 720p H.265 files
I have recently added Container manager and running a container and wish to upgrade in general to smooth things out. I am looking in DS423+,923+ and 1522+
My issue in choosing is mostly the Integrated graphics or not option - so uncertain if the RyzenR1600 will do the work for me. I watch my files using a late iPhone or a NVidia Shield or another alternative TV box so - I think - I do not transcode my files.
In the scenario that above assumptions are correct, and my files 99% of the times being 720p or 1080p with H.265, will the 923+ or 1522+ do the job? Your input will be highly appreciated.
Kind regards,
George

Small 8-Bay NAS with ECC and Transcoding |

Considering NAS build with 8 bays x 20TB for videos, photos, and backup. Don't need that much storage now but want this build to last decades and give me space to expand in the future.
Like the U-NAS NSC-810A for its small footprint and volume.
TopTon N6005 seems to be a good low-power match but no ECC memory.
Looking at SuperMicro X11SSH-TF or X11SSH-CTF. X11SPM-TF or X11SPM-TPF also okay but more expensive. At least 8 SATA, 1 m.2 for OS, plus the Intel 10GbE LAN is nice. Could consider other motherboards with less SATA if I get an HBA. Just might be tight for airflow with U-NAS case and riser cable.
What Xeon CPU for above motherboards can transcode 4K yet has low power?
What is max cooler height for U-NAS NSC-810A? Is Noctua NH-L9i + Noctua NF-A9 the best cooler that can fit?
U-NAS has a 1U Flex power supply by Seasonic for their case but it is only 350W. Is that enough power? Any alternative around 500W that is 1U Flex from a reputable brand?
2 x 16GB RAM enough?
Thanks!

Good morning,
I'm setting up my D8 Hybrid.
For the first 2 bays I will use Raid 1 with two 16TB HDD for cold storage.
I have two options:
WD Ultrastar DC HC550 16TB HDD at €312 each
or
Seagate Exos X18 16TB HDD at €285 each.
Reliability is my main concern, I have never used any Seagate products before only HGST, WD and Toshiba.
Which HDD from the above two do you think would be a better choice?
Your reply will be much appreciated.
Have a nice day
