  Choosing NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-18-2024, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello dears

I followed your NAS builder and the result was for

(QNAP TVS-h674T-i5-32G-US 6 Bay)

And I found used on Ebay in excellent condition and within my budget (around 1300$)

But when I compare it to UGREEN 6800 pro
Which will cost around 1000$ as per Kickstart site

I need really your advice please
Especially that my plan for the machine is to serve me at least 5 to 7 years

And I'm intended to use for almost everything
1-Plex and other media serving
2-servers and back for laptops and mobiles backup for me and my family instead of icloud and other clouds
3-smart home modalities with installing home assistant on it or connecting it to my Hubitat hub
4- cameras CCTV
+/- virtual machine (may be)

Thanks a lot for your amazing help

DS224+ RAM upgrading beyond 6GB worth it?
Posted by: cdpage - 07-17-2024, 09:03 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hello,
before I buy Kingston 4GB I wanted to check in on any tangible benefits of getting an 8GB.

I'm not a heavy user, I'll be storing photo (ideally using the AI smart features) Hand full of videos I'll watch mostly locally. and storing Adobe files. Might use plex now.

I understand that we need the 6GB to make the AI work.

Question is, is getting a 8GB DIMM worth the (in totally guessing minimal speed improvement) vs the chance the synology technical help would not help me becuase of unofficial RAM usage.

  RAID 5 VS NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-17-2024, 05:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I own 3 Drobo FS, 2 filled with 4TB x5 and 1 with filled with 2TB x5. I have 5 new 16TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives. I am broke for the next while as the 5 drives cost 1160.33 CAN in total from aliexpress. Ideally a 4 bay nas is too small as a replacement fo 3 Drobos with 40TB. I feel a 5 bay at minimum would work and feel a QNAP TS-664 would take care of my future needs. I also have a spare computer. It is an i5-3570K with 16Gb ram with 8 sata ports, 6 supporting RAID5 and 1GB LAN and onboard HDMI. I'm thinking Unraid or TrueNAS but could easily create a RAID5 volume and make it a shared drive. Do I need a NAS? My Drobos have media, personal files and Windows image backups. I run 1 Drobo FS 24/7 and turn on the other media Drobos when wanted. I don't access from away or have a business. The spare computer system I rip my media to a SSD and write to the raid array directly. If runing Unraid or TrueNaS I would have to rip from my New system and transfer media over 1GB LAN.

  All in one media machine
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-17-2024, 02:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've a hobby in computers and homelabbing but entirely new to the NAS/DAS world. I want to run Plex/Jellyfin/Emby machine as a pet project, but I also like things to be as clean looking as possible and my workarea is running thin on physical space.

After spending some time looking at NAS communites and watching videos I got a better idea of what it might entail. I keep seeing the n100 being recommended as the server and a small NAS to act as the media storage. I'm, however, looking at either diy or a turnkey option that has an n100/n305 to act as both the server and the storage.

My questions are 'Is there any downsides to having the transcoding and storage on the same device/any Pros or Cons I'm missing?
Do people just recommend the Beelink n100 and simple NAS device for ease of access/price?'

Thank you for your time!

  Best route for NAS Expansion
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-17-2024, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Currently have a QNAP TS-464-4G with all 4 hdd's occupied. These are nearly full (plex server) and are in raid 5. Looking for the best way to add another 4 drives. I have the TS-464 connected to a ups which forces shutdown incase of sudden power lose which if possible i would like the expansion hdds to also do. From my understanding something like this is what im looking for QNAP TR-004 4 Bay Desktop NAS Expansion but wanted to know if i could use a cheap nas as these seem to be even cheaper and just use it as passthrough for the drives to current nas like TerraMaster F4-210 4-bay NAS Quad Core. Also would like to know if a enclosure states it does not support raid like this TERRAMASTER D6-320 External Hard Drive Enclosure Does this mean it doesnt support hardware raid only or hardware and software raid. And if it does support software does my nas support it?

  camera vs DVR

Your honest opinion, would you go with a pair of Ubiquity AI pro cameras or get the Synology DVA 1622?

I am looking for the enhanced video analytics.

How is your Ubiquity program going?

  8 to 10 bay rackmount ssd 10gb SFP28
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-16-2024, 02:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Im looking for a 1U rackmount NAS which supports 8 to 10 enterprise SSD's. Ideally it would support a decent CPU/RAM to host VM's but this is optional.
Looking for high performance 10gb or 25gb connectivity using DAC to a Ubiquiti switch.
I was thinking about a HP or Dell server but not familiar with building a NAS environment on top of a server. Probably better off with an "official" NAS unit with software designed to operate on it.
It will be used to house VM's, snapshots and host backups. Budget is fairly open.
Im not up to speed on benefits of ZFS vs Raid. It's my impression that ZFS requires robust power due to possible lost of data in RAM vs HW Raid which has battery to flush cache.
Im also interested in finding out about the benefits of NVME cache or possibly 2-tier storage options.

Asustor AS6704T and NVMe M.2 SSDs
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-16-2024, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi

I am thinking of purchasing 4x Western Digital Red SN700 -WDS100T1R0C SSDs for my Asustor AS6704T.

What is your opinion on the choice of using the WDS100T1R0C NVMe drives in an Asustor AS6704T?

Should I use heat sinks, even though the Asustor does not specify that you require heat sinks for the WDS100T1R0C?

If you do recommend using a heat sinks with the WDS100T1R0C, which brand and model number of het sink do you recommend using with the AS6704T and WDS100T1R0C SDDs

  Synology DS423+ drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-16-2024, 02:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've been viewing your NAScompares Youtube videos (which are very good btw) and decided to buy a DS423+ NAS enclosure. My problem is finding Toshiba or Seagate 12TB compatible drives. The compatible drives on the Synology website are old and not available or the sub-type model number is not listed on various websites (for example the compatible Seagate drive is model# ST12000VN0008 - 2YS101 - only the ST12000VN0008 model is listed on websites but not the subtype model number which I believe refers to the drive firmware. Can I substitute any ST12000VN0008 model for use in the DS423+?

The Synology drives are much more expensive than thrid party and out of my price range. Alternatively, the Terramaster F4-424 was on my enclosure list but as this is my first NAS (and I am not an IT technical person), I thought the Synology sw would be a better solution for me.

Appreciate any guidance on this.

  Plex NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-15-2024, 11:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need a NAS that can support a moderate-sized 4k video library and 1TB max. storage for a sole-proprietor business. I'm a novice, so it should be very user-friendly. I've read your articles, watched your videos and used the NAS builder, but I still can't figure out what is best for me.

MUST HAVE: HDMI 4k/60fps; min. 2.5GBe internet; not too noisy

WOULD BE NICE: 10GBe internet, either built-in or via PCIe; horizontal form factor to incorporate into home theater, like QNAP TBS-464, Asustor Flashstor 6/12, Lincplus Lincstation N1, etc.

Thank you so much
