Hi there gents. I need a little guidance if possible.
I'm looking to get into my first NAS and move away from the cloud providers. My use case will be;
- File sharing for the family e.g. work/school docs such as Word, Excel, PDF.
- Photo management/storage (I particularly like the look of Synology Photo's).
- Surveillance for a total of 6 cameras (Reolink), and I'd want one disk dedicated to this. I'm aware that I'd need to also purchase extra licences for this.
- Home Assistant via container manager or VM.
- We have a small amount of movies stored, but no transcoding would be needed.
Synology looks to be a good fit, so I initially narrowed it down to;
- DS224+ (I've included this, but should I discount it with no backup given one of the disks would be dedicated to surveillance?)
- DS423+
- DS723+ (Same question as the DS224+)
- DS923+
I've also looked at the DVA series, but being honest, the four bay is way to expensive for me at the moment.
Would love your recommendations please.
Thanks!

Looked at Highpoint's TB3 RAID Arrays? |

Hi.
Sorry I don't really have budget or storage quantity answers to give, I had been vacillating between a Synology, and a Thunderbolt RAID / DAS to take over from my current temporary solution of a 5GBPS USB multibay JBOD SMB shared from an old Mac Mini.
Storage is for for my new (to me) 2019 Mac Pro, which replaces my old 2009 Mac Pro.
My current experience with SMB shared storage has convinced me that for a Mac workstation, non-local, non APFS/HFS+ storage has enough little differences / painpoints that I don't really want to deal with it.
I found your reviews of Terramaster's DAS products very informative, the main weakness seemed to be inflexibility with adding drives / expanding the RAID. I can't quite figure with them whether the driver for the storage requires a permanent reduction in security mode for the system.
I happened on Highpoint's new US$599 Rocketstor RS6618V TB3 RAID DAS array (Vs. Terramaster's $1299 D8-332).
Any chance of a review?
Cheers

Hello
I have watched your YouTube channel and in particular your demonstration of the Motorola RUTx50. I am looking for advice on an excellent starter model that will be deployed in an home/office environment and also deployed in harsh environments whilst travelling. Mainly to countries like Kenya, Zambia and parts of Asia. Plus, the model(s) has to be similar or as close to the RUTx50.
Many thanks
Robert

Hi Ed! - I hope you enjoyed the last coffee, well deserved. Your advice/instructions were spot on!
OK:
I have a 'Number' of shared folders on my Synology NAS, I have created a hierarchical folder structure with subfolders within each shared folder e.g Root Folder e.g. Year - Sub Folders Commercial, Weddings, Family, etc (I am a Photographer)
I have enabled the Synology SMB etc, would enabling FTP (no encryption) be a good idea to help transfer files? If so, how do I go about it?
Running Synology DSM 7.1 atm
For example, Do I have to open an additional port on the Modem? That in itself for me is a strange science
LOL
Any advice would be appreciated

Hi Mate, Just want to quickly say I really appreciate your content and regularly come to your channel for guidance ??
I'm a video editor looking for backup solution that will allow me to transfer large projects (1 - 2tb) without any drop-off in transfer speeds. I will edit from it occasionally but the main focus is to copy alot of files as fast as possible.
I recently bought 3 4tb crucial x6's and (i'm not sure if i've some how bought 3 faulty ones) the speed drops off dramatically when copying across large projects, taking almost 4/5 hours to transfer a 1 tb project.
Potential drives I was looking at are Lexar NM790 4TB SSD, Samsung 990 pro 4tb, Crucial P3 Plus 4TB.
The enclosure I was looking at OWC 4m2 thunderbolt. I like the small size of this but from what I understand it only supports Gen 2 so wouldn't be able to harness the full speed of these drives.
I work on a 16" M1 Max macbook 4tb.
