  First time buyer question
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-23-2024, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello

Have been close to pulling the trigger on a NAS for awhile now. I’m maxed out on several 2TB external hard drives that I store raw photos, 4k video, and phone backups to. I do photo and video editing for personal projects and sometimes for paid projects.

Initial research has me trying to decide between the Synology 923+ and 1522+ and maybe adding two 16GB drives to start. Seems like folks say if the $100 doesn’t matter to you then best to get the 1522+. Is that the case?

Also wondering if it is worth waiting for their next models to come out (guessing announcement by year end). Seems like a long time to wait and the current models are probably plenty capable (and upgradable) for my purposes as a first time user.

Any thoughts between the two or waiting? And recommendations on drives?

Thanks!
Calvin

I have an HP EliteDesk 800 G2, and I would ideally want to use this in a NAS case, is this even possible? If so what would you recommend?

  Tvs874 upgrading storage

Can I swap out my 8 12tb drives for 18 TB drives by replacing them one at a time until all 8 bays are populated with the larger drives? I'm running the qts with zfs in a configuration that gives 2 drive loss.. raid 6 I believe.

  Ds1821+ m2ssd upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-21-2024, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I've decided to set up a NAS to serve as a file server at my workplace, and I've chosen the Synology DS1821+ model. I plan to install 2x16GB 2666MHz Kingston RAM with 19 CL. However, I'm concerned about the compatibility of M.2 SSDs. Synology's own compatible M.2 SSDs are twice as expensive as the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB models. As an alternative, what are the most efficient M.2 SSDs I can use? We'll mainly be accessing the device externally, and we have 1000 Mbps download/upload speeds in the office.

  tvs-h474 vs tvs-h674
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-21-2024, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a growing movie collection. I'm on a single external storage off of a old laptop with plex installed. Right now I would need it for movies, photo/personal videos, later maybe some vms for light gaming via steam. I am a old techie but now a manager of techies. I don't want to overkill but the synology ds-423+ seems like something I would outgrow with no expansion and the cpu. Which would you recommend between the two qnaps nas's and is my opinion about the ds-423+ being something I will grow out of in 2 to 3 years? Also is it possible to add expansion bays to the tvs-h474?

  TerraMaster NAS F4-421 understanding
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-21-2024, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Sirs,
I bought a TerraMaster NAS F4-421 and I am starting with the installation, but the TRAID and partitioning system are not completely clear to me.
In the TerraMaster I inserted one 4TB hard disk; I would like to back up the data I have in a 2TB hard disk onto the TerraMaster, and then format and insert the 2TB hard-disk inside the NAS to be the 2nd hard-disk there. Is that possible?

I also have another clarifying question: if I start the NAS with two 4TB hard-disks in TRAID mode, can I then add another hard-disk with a lower capacity (re-using a spare hard-disk)? Or do I need to insert a new disk with a higher capacity than the ones already inside the NAS?

Thanks in advance!
Best,
Tom

  OpenVPN Server and NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-21-2024, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a TerraMaster F4-223. Just obtained. 32 Gb RAM. 4 10Tb SATA WD HDs. I have a Netgear RT-AC56U router, which supports a built-in OoenVPN server. I'd like to configure it so my NAS will be accessible remotely. The last time I configured and used a VPN was a PPTP server on W7. Yes, a while back. I used it to HoySync my Palm TX remotely, and it was great. Now I want to sync an Android calendar app (Pimlical) using my OpenVPN server and the Android OpenVPN client. I can establish a connection between my Android and my VPN server, but need to know how to let the Android app see the NAS for synchronization. Where should I look?

DIY NAS Setup with Fractal Node 804

Plex server / Game Emulator / Home Storage

Needs to be able to transcode a few 4k --> 1080 remote streams

Planning on using Unraid as OS

Curious if my build sounds solid and if you have an alternative MoBo or PS suggestion

Node 804
ASRock Z690M-ITX/ax LGA 1700 Intel Z690 SATA 6Gb/s DDR4 Mini ITX Motherboard
Crucial Pro 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model CP2K16G4DFRA32A
i5 12500t or i5 12600t
9207-8i PCIE3.0 6Gbps HBA LSI FWTongue20 IT Mode ZFS FreeNAS unRAID 2* SFF-8087 US
1tb m.2 (already have)
RM750x Shift Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Hoping for a system that will last for at least a few years and be expandable/upgradable in the future. Had initially planned on a smaller N-100 build but am thinking the i5 will give me more room to grow.

Thanks for any advice you may have! Your articles have been super helpful!,

  Enterprise Drives vs Consumer Drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-21-2024, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Love your reviews on YT!
I want to get my first NAS. I would like advice on Consumer vs Enterprise drives. The NAS will be in my living room. I will use for editing, store photos, backup phone, store general docs/files, Plex server. I will have maybe 5-10Gb of raw video footage weekly (my kids sports) to edit into highlights.
Cost difference doesnt matter but I do care about stability, performance, I dont want to drives to fail. I do care about noise levels (and I believe this is where I need advice). The shop told me that in sleep mode it is quiet, but what if we watch a movie on Plex? BTW, I can probably set the software to sync backups at night after we sleep so it does less work while we are home in the evenings right?
Thanks guys, I appreciate it!
