  Pi 5 and OPENMEDIAVAULT
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-20-2024, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Can I set up a combination NAS and media streamer using a Raspberry Pi5 and OpenMediaVault?

I want to be able to access and store files (e.g., Word files, Excel files, photos, etc.) as well as stream media to various computers on my home network.

Thank you.

Synology USB HDD compatibility for backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-20-2024, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi Robbie and Eddie! Just wanted to start by saying thank you for all the content you guys create. It has been really helpful into my journey in NAS!

From your content I finally purchased a Synology DS223j to store our ever-growing family photos and to add a form of backup I want to buy an external USB storage device.

I've checked the compatibility list and feel I want to stick with Seagate and a 3.5 hdd for better cold storage over 2.5 add so this has limited me to two options!

The problem i have and wanted to find out from your experience is DSM strict in specific model numbers and would it not work with the NAS?

I'd prefer to go for a 4GB drive (save money and will match my max capacity) rather than an 8GB but dont want to risk it. Also i found on amazon today the Expansion Desktop 8GB but the model number is slightly different (Synology compatability list = STKP8000400 vs Amazon = STGY8000400) due to being an "Amazon Exclusive". I dont even know if i want to risk this as it isn

  Novice: Choosing right NAS model?
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-20-2024, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. Any insight is appreciated. Wanting a NAS option mainly for storing and safe keeping of pictures and home videos. Not using it for plex or anything like that. Would like to be able to upload pics/vids from phone, and remotely (& quickly) view those pics/vids when away from home network. Ideally, we would be able to organize and create albums as needed.

Thank you

  prebuilt
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-19-2024, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello. I'm looking for a prebuilt NAS, including OS, excluding storage. I currently use Jellyfin; I won't pay a subscription to stream my own content. I need to run an AirPrint server to print natively from iPhone to a network-attached printer. I'd like to run a node.js instance. I would like a product not from an American or Chinese company. European or Taiwanese are ok. Thanks.

  Thank you/suggestion for topics
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-19-2024, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Wow, I thought I over-analyzed things! Thank you! I ended up getting a two bay Synology with small hardrives. I used many sources to decide...yours was most thorough. I don't know if this is out of your realm for topics but how about: 1. Why do I need a nas anyway...I can just use the cloud (onedrive, google, etc)? 2. Strategies for safely preserving precious files (for home) with a nas in conjunction with a cloud subscription.
There's probably more than just two topics in these. Hope this helps you. Thanks again so much!

  NAS Initialization w/SSD
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-19-2024, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

Thank you for your original reply to my NAS question. I am finally have all the parts I need to re-initialize my Asustor 5404T NAS and I had a couple of follow up questions. So I have backed up everything onto an external drive and I am ready to start fresh. I removed all of my HDD's from the unit and installed the following SSD:

WD Redâ„¢ SA500 NAS SATA SSD 1TB

However when I go to initialize the drive via the Asustor Command Center, it doesn't detect a drive and asks me to insert a HDD in order to proceed. Am I missing a step?

Do I need to re-insert the 2 HDD's I have in order to initialize the SSD as the OS drive?

I don't know if it's relevant, but I upgraded the amount of RAM I had to 16 GB (2 x 8GB) a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks,
Mitch

  Home NAS please help.
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-19-2024, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Nas for home plex, cloud storage and possible upgradable RAM.

Looking to do some 4k H.264 files and if I use only licenced players in home then maybe H.265. All mkv or MP4

I do a bit of youtube as a hobby, I need cloud storage

But Plex and cloud can be a first and I may get a second NAS just for my photo and video editing later.

Im a little unsure if I need transcoding ability or not, ill try not to use it if my statement above I can acheive.

But I have a 2 bay DS213+ which is very old and only suports syno 6.2

I did look at 923+ 1522 Qnap and others but I really like the synology.

But what would you suggest please

KR Simon
