First Nas after Home Server |

Hi,
I am looking for a NAS for last two years to replace my HP MicroServer Gen7 with OMV (Docker installed with PLEX,Jellfin and Homeassistant) but could not able to decide which one can solve my requirements.
With NAS, I want to start to backup my photos and videos and share with my family. while as hobby I like to create VWs and try out new solutions like linux distros, hacintosh etc, to see what new.
My confusions;
- Do I need 2 bay or 4-5 bay solution? (Maybe I can get more powerful 2-bay NAS for 4-Bay price)
- After read your reviews and watching your videos, I start think to go to Synology or QNAP solutions while my understanding that software is more critical. But mainly those solution has 4 or 8 gb rams and this confuses me. As an example I want to create a VM with 8 gb and the NAS already have 4 GB. Also if I create multiple VMs what will happen.
- Also local file-server...
-Currently looking ds923+, TS-673 and new UGREEN.
Could you please help me?
Best regards,
Özay ÖZCAN

Question about DX517 - 5 bay expansion unit |

In the downloadable specifications for the DX517, in the notes it states "To have better performance, we recommend creating
storage volumes physically located within the same
NAS or Expansion Unit, rather than creating volumes
across your NAS and Expansion Unit"
I'm guessing this means that the overall disk i/o performance of the drives in the expansion unit are not the same as for the drives in the actual NAS unit. However, I couldn't find anything about the overall performance of the drives in the expansion unit.
I was wondering if you knew the reason for this restriction in the notes and what, if any, performance hit is there in the expansion unit. I'm thinking that this means that for the best performance, you are better off buying a NAS with the desired number of drives instead of adding an expansion unit to a smaller NAS. (of course, assuming memory, processing power, etc are all the same).
Curious if you had any knowledge or experience with this issue?
Thanks!

UGREEN 5$ was a scam |

The 5$ deposit for preferred entry into the kickstarter campaign and a secured spot to ordering a System was a scam. Its all over the german Ugreen Facebook group.
Everyone could order the decvices today, the 5$ upfront deposit was in no way linked to the entry into ordering a NAS. The buying process never asks if you have deposited 5$ via Ugreens Website nor does it demand any other means of checking your upfront deposit before letting you order.
So, all this was a scam, noone got any benefit from depositing the 5$ to UGREEN. The users just gifted them that money.
Please report on this.

Which NAS |

I am looking to find something that has the capability of using Jellyfin (or a service where I can watch my own movies/shows) and also use it has my own cloud storage for photos. That’s really about it. I have a very small library of movies and shows but I do still want to be able to expand later. I thought about a 2 bay that I can then expand into later but not sure if that’s a good option or if it would be better to buy a 4 bay. Never bought a NAS and not sure what to do.

I decided to move all my photos and data from google to NAS, currently i'm using google drive with 200gb sub, so 4TB will be more than enough for now. First thought were to get BeeStation, but dropped it after watching your video, now thinking more of DIY solution. I want it to be able to run Immich, not sure About Plex, rather no for now, but i would love to play with Home Assistant and discover more things. I'm a software engineer, so learning is ok. Also power consumption is a topic. Thanks!

Hi there mate, been a minute since I've been watching your vids.
So I'm a photographer / videographer looking to store my data on hard drives as I'm tired of piling them up. I bought a jonsbo N3 and I have 2 drives. As mentioned above. the Exos enterprise 18tb I have someone who knows about this and he's lending me a hand but he doesn't have time to explain so I'm a bit stuck & I'd like to have an overall understanding. I'd like to scale up over time and run unraid which allows me to scale up over time I think?
I'm pretty crap at this as you can prob tell. I was looking at the i3 N305. What's my best bet? I would love to be able to edit from the nas once I have all 8 drives, if that's even worth it? or just stick with an ssd to edit? Also can always make updates in the future if I wanted to I presume? Anyway, apart from that, I think that's it. I still have to read about a lot of confusing things I don't really understand hence me writing to you.
Thanks again.
Regards
Charlie

GPU question |

Hi,
I have a QNAP TS-873A that I use for a variety of things. Lately I was considering getting a GPU for transcoding. First place I looked was your videos for suggestions and you identify several that are available.
MSI GTX1650 4GT LP OC £240
ZOTAC GAMING GeForce GTX 1650 LP 4GB £240
ASUS PH-GTX1050TI-4G £212
MSI Geforce GT1030 2G LP OC £60
GIGABYTE GV-N1030D5-2GL Low Profile £60
There is a big price difference between them and I'm not going to make the assumption that the more expensive cards are better. That appears to vary and there could be a limitation on the QNAP which means there is no difference for my use.
Basically I want to use it for transcoding and potentially any other GPU task that may come out in the future. Is there any real difference between them for this?
Which one would you buy yourself to help future proof it?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
Dave
