  Nas for home/business
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-09-2024, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I work from home in the music industry and need a NAS or any storage solution.
I have a ton of VST (like 6 TB), plus all the sessions and my data.
Thanks in advance.

  1GbE Lan Vs 2GbE Lan
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-08-2024, 04:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi I am looking to get a NAS device for a Plex server. I have some 4K files and just wondering is a 1GbE Lan provide enough speed to stream them on my home network via Plex? or would I need 2.5 GbE? or is the 2.5GbE just useful for file transfer speeds.

  NAS system

Looking to get into NAS for the first time and trying to figure out what to do. Looking at a 2 bay Synology NAS with 1 or 2 WD Red drives mainly for backup. One question is should I use a NAS with only one drive? In my situation, there may be times where I may not use the NAS for months or even maybe a year at a time. Would a NAS be a waste if I am not using it that often? I don't deal with alot of data, maybe have 4tb at the very most and really doesn't grow that fast at all. Do have 3 computers that I would like to backup to the NAS if I get one. Currently have 3 hard drives that I hook up to a single computer using an external hard drive reader. For me, I tend to have trouble remembering and over time, I lose track and what has been backed up and when. Thinking a NAS would help make that process easier. This is mostly home use although we are a business as well, but a small seasonal business. Thought about building my own NAS but do want to keep it simple as possible. Ty

  Home Storage Solution
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-08-2024, 12:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I recently saw the Ugreen NAS on Kickstarter and thought about backing it, however, I have watched a few of your videos and feel like I might get in over my head. I can certainly learn and am pretty comfortable with operating computers, but now I feel like NAS may be more than I need. I use Apple products and am looking for the best storage solution for my over 700 movie collection with the option to share with family/friends. Also want to backup photos, files, etc. I have used WD My Book products in the past and set them up as network drives but always seem to run into issues with their software. What solution would you recommend? After watching your videos, I just feel like NAS would be overkill. Appreciate your help.

Backing up my nas to the cloud
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-07-2024, 11:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am going to be buying a nas soon (probably a qnap) with four 8TB drives likely using RAID 6.
I want to backup qnap to a cloud service for as cheap as possible preferably once a week (but would do monthly or quarterly if it saves significant $).
After the first transfer I would like the cloud to either update with just the new stuff, or delete the old and replace with the new (I dont need multiple backups).

I was looking into amazon glacier and google cloud (nearline/coldline/archive storage) but I don't understand the pricing structure as it would relate to how I want to use it. Blackbaze b2 seems ok, but i feel like those other options (i have not even yet looked into other sites) might end up being cheaper (my ultimate hope is that I will never have to access that backup data)
any advice on which way to go
Alternatively, I saw a youtube video you made about "tricking" the cloud to thinking was a computer, any advice on how to do that on a qnap?

NAS backup to cloude, secondary question
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-07-2024, 11:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

just to add to my last message about cloud backup, what are your thoughts on idrive-e2 that can be set up though amazon s3 comptable and I would pay for 10TB/year ($300) vs back blaze where 8tb would cost 675/year

  terramaster f4-424 - can't boot to nvme?
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-07-2024, 01:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I'm following your guide to install proxmox on terramaster f4-424 (appreciate it so much a gave a small donation).

It would not recognize a Evo 970 1TB, but did recognize a Evo 980 1TB. Even though it is recognized in the bios, there seems to be no way to set it to boot from nvme?

  Word

Good afternoon,
My wife and I are having a discussion and would like some clarity on a word used.

Pronounced “Nicka”

I believe it is being used a stand in and can mean either American Dollar or British Pound. Either way it’s a tough estimate of price.

Can you please provide clarity for us?

Thank you, much appreciated.

Also, love the videos! Bought my first synology after watching videos from yall.

  Plex server setup questions
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-07-2024, 01:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I really love the channel and the site and have been doing research for over a year on and off, tossing around ideas on what I want to do. I don't want to pay for Plex Pass on principle. I shouldn't have to pay for HW transcode. I'm not sure if I want to go with a shield pro or another route.

I've been streaming to my HiSense U8K in another room using my personal computer (3900X, 2080 Super, 2x16 GB 3600 Mhz 16-16-16-36 RAM and HGST 4 TB HDD) over WIFI, without issues. It direct plays the content. I want something that doesn't depend on my PC being on and I want the files to be network accessible.

I've been using "watch together" to stream to someone. We speak on the phone during this and some days the sync is very off, while others it's fine.

One external stream at a time is the most I intend on, and it doesn't need to be 4K & HEVC capable, but would be great if affordable. I plan to upgrade to 16 TB RAID10 in the future. What would be the most budget-concious way to achieve this?
