Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Good Day and Great Vids
My question is i want to setup a NAS soon. They can be pricey so i wanted to get the QNAP TS-453D. And wanted to start of with one hdd (seagate). Does that have to be setup on raid1. Can i then add 1 (2 more hdd) in the future and update to raid5.

thanks for your helps

Hey, I think everyone agreed the ds1019+ was (and is) a beast, but with time marching on, I'm wondering if theres a better option for a plex server with 5+ bays?

  What NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have been watching your YouTube videos, specifically about the 2bay latest and greatest from Synology and QNAP. Very helpful. I think I should get the DS720+, but was curious what you thought and if I should upgrade the RAM or do anything else as part of the process. It is for a small business where 3 people are using the shared file syncing to update contracts, bills, and other PDFs. Everyone's personal files are synced and backed up as well. I have a few other computers that also backup to the NAS but don't really have anyone working on them on a daily basis. We currently have DS214+ that I installed about 5-6 years ago and another single bay NAS from synology. Basically, I have 3, 3TB HDDs backing up the same data, one in a remote location. It works fine, but it certainly slow compared to what is out there today. I am interested in adding some more features and keeping the existing NAS as backup for the primary NAS I am about to order. The features I wanted to add that don't seem to be available to the hardware I have now are: email server (synology seems to have a better option than QNAP from what I see); basic wordpress webhosting for site that will have little to no traffic; the google office type features. I just have a cable internet connection 100/10, and we do remote in on the phone app to get files saved to the shared file. Using windows computers, btw. Also, I sync files remotely to a laptop. I have a gigabyte LAN where the NAS is and don't know that I could really utilize the 2.5 option that comes on the QNAP. Because SSDs are so much faster, I was also thinking about putting in a 2TB SSD with a HDD, using the SSD as the primary drive and the other as a backup. Or really, I might just leave the second drive out since I have the other two NAS to backup to. I am only using 700gb of the 3TB drives I have today. As far as my technical skill set, I am fairly tech savy and know how to look stuff up online, but I do often need to follow others instructions for setting up stuff like this. I recall it being fairly easy a few years ago, but I get back into all the acronyms and it takes me some time to research "how to" guides to make sure I am doing it right. Thank you!

  NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Saludos!

  Synology DS920+ memory upgrade?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi Mr NAS Expert ;-),

I followed few articles and videos you made and I recently bought a DS 920+. Im quite happy but I wanted to be sure it is useful to extend the memory from 4Gb standard to 20Gb (adding a 16G ram). I read you mention it is better to have 2x RAM with the same size... Do I need to remove the 4Gb embeded and add 2x 8Gb or I can go ahead and buy a 16G one directly ?

Thanks a lot for your help and your valuable support with your site nascompares.com !

Cheers,

Max

  QNAP expansion?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there I have a qnap ts 453Be with two bays with 4tb ironwood drives in raid 1 They are nearly full.

I want to buy two 10tb drives for the other bays.

I could set these up raid 1 too and have 14tb of space ?
In future If I want to replace old 4tb drives later with bigger drives say a further two 10tb drives. Can I just copy data on 1 old 4tb drive to a new 1otb drive (which I have just swapped out for one of the old 4tb drives) . Then swap out that old 4tb and set up raid 5 across the four 10tb drives ?

Or I think I can add them now and set the RAID to 5 across 4Tb,4Tb,10Tb,10TB but believe this will limit the new drives to 4tb too and only get 75% of this ie 12tb. Future wise though I think would be simpler as I could just replace one drive and reset raid. Then swap out other and reset raid.

Im am def no expert and just picking things up from internet.
So would appreciate if you could confirm the options are correct and what you think would be best.

Many thanks
Lorraine

  LMS (Squeeze Server)?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, I am running an old NetGear Duo NAS for file server and media server purposes at home. One of the thing I have liked about this one is that Logitech has provided a native Logetech Media Server (earlier Squeeze server) for this NAS in the past. Now they have dropped it from new LMS updates resulting in some services not working anymore across both the Logitech mysqueezebox.com server and the LMS server at home. Deezer is one of the services requirening seemless cooperation between the two instances.
Logitech lists only Windows Home Server 1.x under now supported NAS systems.
Do you know id QNAP or Synology or anyone else provides a good LMS support these days?

Thank you for the NAS Compares page!

Henrik

Synology DS 1621+ vs Synology DS1821+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Although not a professional photographer, I have a lot of photos and recently purchased a high resolution digital camera. I have photos on 6 devices and want to consolidate them onto a NAS. I have a MacBook Pro which is now constantly out of storage.

I am not technically inclined. I started this journey thinking that the Synology DS 1520+ would be more than sufficient for my needs. However, further research seems to suggest that I should get a device that is upgradable to 10 Gbe which brought me to the Synology DS1621+

Having come this far, I am wondering if the 1821+ is more bang for the buck. I would appreciate your feedback.

Thank you.
Glenda

  NAS for PLEX server?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi
I want to set up a PLEX server to allow family to stream a collection of home videos (not 4k movies etc).
However, my router is next to TV and I have found NAS boxes to be noisy and distracting but I cannot easily put it elsewhere as it needs an ethernet port on the router.
I have been looking for a 'silent' NAS. Surely this is possible if I use SSD? I can only find the QNAP HS-453DX from 2017 and it looks quite dated now.

Are you aware of any suitable products please?
thanks!!
