I'm looking at getting a NAS server for PLEX and live TV/DVR. I want a lot of storage to download and store a lot of Movies, TV Shows, Pictures and Music. I also plan on using Plex with my HDHomeRun for Live/TV and DVR.

  QNAP ROUTER ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I currently own the AMPLIFI HD mesh router and was contemplating adding the
NETGEAR 8-Port Multigigabit Smart Managed Pro Switch with 2x SFP+ Ports (MS510TXM) along with my new QNAP NAS TSH886. But then I saw your video on the new QNAP Router and thought this may in fact be a better solution for my small set up... I only need to connect 1x MACPRO 2019 to the NAS and one other Computer for file management. The Netgear switch is a little overkill but I still like my current router https://amplifi.com/amplifi-hd.. so I could get the NETGEAR switch and the new https://amplifi.com/alien which supports wifi 6.. or just get the The QNAP QHora-301W, Im very confused. How is the qnap interface and is there a Moible app to manage it?? thanks for your advise. Todd.

  Backup QNAP to External Device?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Rob, thank you for your advice late last year. I followed your links on comparing the Synology and QNAP and decided to purchase the QNAP 453D. Since then I have enjoyed your YouTube videos and followed the steps on a variety of topics however I am stuck on Backup.

Despite reviewing several of your videos on HSB3 Hybrid Backup, several others' videos on this application, and other HSB3 articles in general, I am seeking your advice on how to backup to an external device. I currently am using the WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra and experimenting with the QNAP to ensure I have Snapshots, users, etc working but especially the backup process before I move everything across to the QNAP.

I couldn't get the HSB3 Hybrid Backup job > Remote NAS (RTRR Server) or Remote NAS account options to recognise the WD3 device. So I followed the Hybrid Mount process to successfully mount the WD3. However the WD3 device shows on FileStation at the same hierarchical level as DataVol1. When I now use HBS3 the WD3 shows as 'Remote CIFS/SMB Server' under Storage Spaces but the selection of Local NAS as a Destination Storage Space only reveals the DataVol1 set of files.

I tried mapping the WD3 as a network drive using MS File Manager but the HBS3 'Map External Volume' is greyed out.

So I am at a loss where to go from here. Your assistance would be gratefully appreciated if you could give me some options on where to look from here.

Regards, Xaviour

  8 Bay QNAP Layout?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there,

I really love your videos. They have helped me set up my 2 bay QNAP and Synology devices, so thank you.

However, I really need some advice about the setup of an 8 bay QNAP I have just bought, along with 8 x 4Tb WQ Reds.

My main concern that I don't want to stripe the disks. I don't need speed, and I want to be able to access the contents of the disks were I to have a hardware failure, so I can stick any drive in a caddy and read the disks, but at the same time, having a mirror of the disks for redundancy.

I'm thinking that my solution would be something like 4 x 4Tb disks mirrored with the other 4 x 4Tb drives.

Would I have just one storage pool and 2 volumes?, or do I create 2 pools and mirror those?

Also, do I set the drives up as a JBOD?

I hope you can point me in the right direction, or maybe let me know how I can go about getting this information? I am a home user with a bit of knowledge. (Dangerous). Mainly backing up vast amounts of photographs, and negative scans.

Thank you so much,

Stephen Donoghue.

  Best DAS for home storage?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, I'm looking for a DAS that does raid 5 for data storage.

I've got a terra master d4-310 with 4x8TB as 2 sets of raid 1.

I am looking between a

QNAP TR-004 4 Bay Desktop NAS Expansion

or a

TerraMaster D4-300 USB

So I can have 24TB of useable space.

Obviously the terra master is cheaper but finding out if it can do software raid 5 is difficult.

It does look like the Qnap can do hard and software raid 5.

Is the Qnap the sensible option as it might be more money but ease of use is the main thing.

  Add Ram to DS 720+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,
I recently bought DS720+, I have decided to add additional RAM, But I am confused with to go Synology 4GB RAM or Crucial Brand(as it is very cheap) compared to Synology RAM also which is not available in online shopping in India, need to look for Synology partner here.

So my question, adding Crucial RAM, any difference in the performance and violate NAS hardware warranty? Please help to clarify.

Thanks

  DAS vs NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello! Thank you for your helpful videos. I am relatively new to the world of NAS. My wife and our daughters have been very busy creating video content during the pandemic and I want to ensure they are stored in a safe accessible space. Our current WD My Cloud Home 8TB is filling up rapidly so I am looking at two options. A Synology 420+ with 4x 8TB drives in a RAID 5 or digging out an old Lenovo M93P desktop (SFF) running Windows 10 and adding a QNAP TR-004 to it. All we need the solution to do is host some network shares for storage etc (for Windows and Mac) and our Plex media library. I have 2x 8TB and 1 10TB drive however I do not have the TR-004 or the 420+. Essentially the budget is just for the device itself. Thank you again for all of your help!
