Small Business + plex nas advice? |

Hi,
I love your content, thank you! I am brand new to the world of NAS storage and find the whole area quite confusing. I am sure you have answered my question many times over so my deepest apologies if you have.
I am looking for an 8 bay desktop-style NAS enclosure only right now, for as close to the £1000 mark as possible with the intention of buying 10tb or above drives as I need them to populate the bays in the coming weeks or months
I work from home running a company called Wylies Outdoor World, here is our web link if you are interested https://wyliesoutdoorworld.com/
I am needing a NAS system to share files between my team both locally and remotely. These files can be anything from pictures, documents all the way up to 4k video files.
We are still quite new to YouTube but focusing and investing heavily this year in growing our YouTube with our camping, bushcraft tutorials, product reviews and will be touring the UK filming in 4k.
All our files will be held on the nas, But I also use plex as my home media server, which I do watch from my mobile device on cold nights on camping trips.
at the moment all these files are held on my main editing pc, it works like a dream but sharing is problematic I find with other users out of my network .
if you could point me to a qnap or Synology enclosed that will do these jobs I would be really gratfull

QNAP TVS-872XT? |

I'm running a plex server for my family off of my TVS-872XT and am getting towards the point where more and more family members are being added and watching concurrently.
I am planning to max out my RAM, but wanted to see what the best CPU upgrade was that would work?
Thanks!

Hi
I have a 3TB airport time capsule that is now 10 years old and seems to be failing. I have worked out that I have approx 800GB of data on my iMac to be backed up. I also have a my passport 2TB drive which holds my TV, Movies, Photos (approx 26,000 pictures so far) and Music, this is almost full and is backed up to the time capsule. So in total I have approx 3TB of stuff backed up. As the time capsule is not looking good I think it is time to look at getting a NAS. I think I have narrowed it down to a QNAP-TS-453D or Synology DiskStation DS920+. We run in our house 1 x iMac, 1 x MacBook (occasionally) 1 x iPad mini, 2 x iphones, 1 x apple TV. Also have 2 Bose systems, 2 DVR recorders, 2 oppo blueray units, Bose soundTouch with 2 x wif amps. We also have 4 hikvision cameras connected to an NVR (don't need connecting to NAS). I have just bought a Linksys poe+ 24 port switch which ports everything around the house via cat cabling.
My first question is with the amount of data I have as explained above, am I being over the top with my choices of NAS? Here in Australia I would be looking at approx AU$1600 to buy this, including Ironwolf drives. If it is overkill, what NAS drives would you recommend stepping down to? I only require the backup and storage for a growing media collection and assume a NAS will give me access to all files and media files from any computer/device being used. Also at the moment stream media from iMac to apple TV2 to Loewe TV, would Plex be better?
Second I am not sure how big I should go with the Ironwolf drives. My logic says I have 3TB already, 4TB won't last long, 6TB might last a while and 8TB would be perfect but if I am buying 3 drives for either of the NAS drives mentioned does that give me over the top storage capacity. Can't get my head around RAID capacities over actual capacity required. I think a total of 8TB should see me through the next few years so would I get away with 3 x 3TB drives and be able to have enough room for all that I need to back up, 3TB, and the amount of storage I need for my growing media collection.
I only started researching this last week and have learnt quite a bit from your videos etc. But as you know it is a minefield out there, I'm happy to spend AU$1600 if it gets me a future-proofed but if I can save some money and tone it all down a bit my wife would be happy!!!
Sorry this is a bit long winded and I hope it makes sense to you, but I want to get my choice right!!
Thanks for all your hard work in making your videos and I look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions
Kind regards
David

Hi.
I came across one of you videos. Well done very interesting indeed.
At the moment I have 4 USB 2 tb drives which I connect to my laptop one at camp time. But would love to have access to all music if in one place.
I have a duo nas with 2 hard disc and found it challenging to transfer the amount of music and gave up on it.
I also have karaoke music available on the drives but would be great to connect and see them on the TV via my denon amo which is available through WiFi or can cast to it.
The main question!! Would do you recommend that would see all my music in one place and easily accessible? Also easily to update should I need to.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Alfred

I have QNAP ts-453b and I would like to buy QM2 M.2 ssd/10GbE network expansion card
Could you please give me your advice regarding the best compatible card for my QNAP NAS which gives me the best speed and be good for future upgrade if I want to upgrade to a newer QNAP NAS.
I found many compatible cards on QNAP Website but I’m not sure which one to choose.

NAS buying Advice? |

I've watched what feels like 50 of your videos, which is a good sign I either like you or that you are well marketed on Youtube for good reason. I've been considering picking up my first home SMB nas for some time now and always drawn to QNAP....similar to how we use Android and stay rather clear of Apple.
I'll tell you what I'm considering first, then offer some of the non-tech variables also impacting my final decision. I previously was the admin at a company using an old Netapp. I think 20TB at the time took up a good 2 full size racks. It was stable and very resilient in the even t of power outages....oh times change.
I have about 2 1/2 TB of of data across 3 computers. I guess the annual change rate of that data to be 15%-20%. The annual growth that I'd account for is under 1 TB. So I will be needing to account for snapshots, backup and the system could sync to a cloud account on some data.
Right now I am waffling between the QNAP TS-453D-8G 4 Bay or QNAP TS-653D-8G 6 Bay.....leaning more towards the 4 bay (Ive no first hand experience with the QNAP). At first I though I'd go with four 4TB drives...whether in the 4 bay or the 6bay (for growth). Then I started considering instead starting off with a RAID1 using two 10 or 12 TB drives and then adding more drives (and changing at that time to RAID5) if capacity somehow is tight.
I think I started to get stuck when looking at what drives to use. The videos on CMR vs SMR vs DSMR and Western Digital PR errors with disclosure. I was also considering an NVME expansion for a caching SSD.....but honestly....I dont have the network performance to realize the value of that speed just yet.
Here is something I need to plan for. I am from the USA but my wife and I live overseas in Egypt. Our internet service is acceptable but can hit a cap now and then. Because of the nature of our jobs and location...we have GO BAGS ready in the event we are given notice that we have 5 minutes to be out the door and evacuate....leaving everything else behind (which we would most likely be able to return at some point...but that is never certain).
So...others like me have gone with smaller (2 drive) NAS units that fit in large carryon backpacks as part of the normal airline carryon bag. I would consider this but cannot help feeling vulnerable not having the long term option to get to RAID5 at least. If I had a relative back home in the States that could also get a unit...I suppose doing a sync between the 2 would technically work...just creates new complexities. And in regards to noise...will be in my office in an apartment so most preferred not to hear something that sounds like an air purifier running.
I'd love any insight you might have for choosing a solution. I know there are many other expats that asks similar questions in the circles we travel in.
Thanks for your consideration

New NAS for Plex server + future proofing? |

Greetings!
Looking for a new NAS primarily to replace on of my Plex servers and would love some advice from a real expert.
Owner of a QNAP 453Bmini (J3455 + 4GB ram + 4x 8TB WD Red, raid 6) and an Asustor AS6208T (N3150 + 4GB ram + 7x 4TB WD Red, raid 6 + 1x 450GB SSD).
The Asustor is running a Plex server for movies but are starting to have problems as more and more is h256 which is to much for the N3150. It is also is starting to run out of space as well.
The QNAP is running a Plex server for TV-series and is playing everything Im throwing at it, but is starting to have problems with a fan that is shutting down. Seems I would have to break the plastic cover in order to replace the fan and is not super happy about it.
For some reason I have issues with link aggregation on both of them and cant for my life figure out why. (yes, it is a managed switch that can handle link agg + 2x 10 GigE, but is currently low on empty ports, 2x 1 Gig + 1x10 GigE free).
So I am starting to look for a new server that can handle my movie library and can handle the bandwith which will be increased as my 4k movies library increases.
Total simultaneously streaming demand would be 1x 4k movie on my local network, and 3x 1080p remotely to my family. Currently on a 100/100 internet line.
Am happy with my Asustor (more simplistic settings), but the QNAP is a little messy as I am not an expert of all the advanced settings.
Are now reading up on Synology which looks like an interesting middle ground.
But would love if you can suggest a suitable NAS to become my new movie Plex server that will last for many years to come.
Am looking for something with the following specs:
- CPU - can handle transcoding 1080+4k.
- RAM - minimum 4GB (will upgrade to 8GB).
- M.2 - Prefer 2x slots. If not, then the possibility to upgrade with a PCI slot.
- 10GigE - Need to have a 10GigE as my link agg is messing with me. Or the possibility to upgrade with a PCI slot.
- Run Raid 6
- Bays - As many as possible, or to have the possibility to increase with an extension bay later. Initially would have to be able to directly cover my Asustor (18TB).
- Preferable not too power hungry.
I am trying to future proof as much as my wallet allows and have looked around but not found any that covers all of my requirements.
If it is Qnap, Asustor, Synology is of less importance as long as it is a good machine that will last for many years to come.
My budget would be approx 700 -> 1700 USD. (ex HDD).
Maybe you have heard of any upcoming models in 2021 that would fit?
Would appreciate any suggestions you might have!
Thank you!
