Synology SHR with mixed drive sizes to mirror data?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

You have the greatest site - even far better than Synology. Thank you so much for being here!

I have a DS918+ . It will be used to backup (nightly) my data from my windows computers on to the NAS for backup protection. Nothing more. I am having difficulty understanding how my data will write over all 4 drives to MIRROR my data when my drive sizes are not the same. In reality do I now have only 1TB of space to store data in a mirrored fashion? The data storage is not as much my worry as is drive failure. If you can help explain how much of my data is written on to each of those 4 drives and then explain what would happen to the data on each of those drives if a drive (or 2) failed. I hope I am wording this correctly because my confusion makes it even harder for me to explain! Thank you again - you provide an amazing level of information!

From Zyxel NSA325v2 to Zyxel NAS542 or QNAP TS-251D?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi
I've been using Zyxel NSA325v2 about six years without problems. But naturally it is at the end of its career pretty soon. I am considering between these two modells - should I continue Zyxel because it's familiar or should I try to learn to use QNAP.
Mainly my NAS serves as storage of music, movies and photos. I use bittorrent client quite often too.
I watch movies and listen music with Kodi using Minix Neo media hub which is connected to(W)LAN with my NAS. 2TBs for movies, series, photos, music, school stuff and work stuff is getting too small so I decided to buy new NAS and new hard drives.
So I am wondering if I get anything really special with QNAP TS-251D and its better performance or should I stay with Zyxel (NAS542) only because I might know (mostly) how to use it?

  Hdd capacity limitations?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi! i have synology ds418 and i want to buy 4 HDDs ST12000NM001G 12TB each. BUT i took a look into the NAS manual and there is a table with fill called “maximum internal raw capacity” which is 40 TB (4x10TB) BUT the official synology site has a compatibility table where you can see that ds418 is compatible with larger capacities than just 10TB will there any problems if i’ll put these 4 HDDs into my NAS?
thanks!

  Which NAS to buy?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am looking for a system that does many things. I am a photographer that travels throughout the USA and the world. When I am not traveling, I do data processing for family business (5) along with their IT needs. I have asked Synology SEVERAL TIMES to help direct me in the right direction to something that would satisfy my needs and their reply was, talk to a company that sell our NAS. NOT MUCH HELP! So, this is what I am looking for in a NAS system. I can access it remotely and can upload photos while traveling. I currently carry portable hard drives with me; HOWEVER, after being robbed in Frankfurt, a months’ worth of photos went with the thieves. I would like the ability to return where I am staying and upload them to (maybe) a cloud drive that would sync to my NAS. I also use PLEX but this isn’t the highest thing on my list (a nice to have). I currently have 85TB on external hard drives. Most items on these drives are historical documents that are not access often. But I do need to get to them. You know that means going through each drive looking for the information I need. I would be the primary user on the NAS. I have 10 other computers throughout the USA that would need access to the NAS mainly for backup. I have 1GB Fiber internet, Netgear Nighthawk X10 R9000 Router, 2 Netgear JGS524NA switches. I am 100% WINDOWS. What would you recommend for a NAS and what type of drives and RAID. WOW, I have watched VID after VID and I cannot really understand what the base way is to configure RAID. Thank you for your time and help.

  D5-300 vs D5-thunderbolt?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have jumped into Emby and discovered it loves my wallet. I initally upgraded my HTPC to a I3-9100 on a H370M-Plus MB with 16GB DDR. I have 2 6TB HDD in a RAID O. Windows raid is not working well and I find I am also wanting more space, and RAID 5 or 10. I am torn between the Terramaster D5-300 or the D5-TB. The big issue is initial cost of the D5-TB cost and needing more drives that I would like to be 8TB. my current system works vary well so I assume a DAS not a NAS to save money would work? Can I use the D5-300 and expect the same level or better performance allowing to put more money to HDD's? Can I upgrade HDD's later if I need more space and how easy/difficult would that be? I am not super computer knowledgeable and any information and directional help would help.
