Synology NAS choice ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,
Would you recommend I go with DS 1520+? Especially if it is only $50 more than DS920+ ? I think DS920+ satisfies my needs.

-- Currently Amazon is up charging for DS920+. Amazon selling for near $650 (seemingly above list price found everywhere for $549) and DS1520+ for $699
-- My concerns are really the increased noise (located in office room) and power consumption of DS1520+
-- My use: I will be backing up several (5-10 computer users) and support personal cloud for them. Some digital media..

I have watched over several years to buy what would be currently the Synology DS920+ 4 bay NAS. Have not purchased previously, not having funds, but now have saved enough Amazon credits to purchase from Amazon.

Appreciate your reviews and your advice. Thank you,
-T

RAM for Synology DS920+ NAS ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Question.. I know maximum RAM is 8GB for DS920+, but I hear users use 16GB without issue.

-- Is 16GB RAM (2 x 8GB) really a problem to be avoided?
-- I understand there are warrantee issues, but are there stability issues or other use issues that would steer away from the 16GB RAM option?

Thank you,
tony

QNAP TS-332X and TS-932PX to support QuTS Hero?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi. I have spent a day trying to find out which QNAP NAS'es will support the new QuTS Hero OS. I cannot seem to find that out :-(

My use case is backups (Apple Time Machine) and storing and editing audio files. I would like my backups to be fast.

I am leaning towards QNAP TS-332X and TS-932PX with some SSDs for Qtier and caching + 3.5" drives in RAID.

Is it likely that these can support QuTS Hero properly for file handling purposes if you upgrade them to 16GB RAM? (non-ECC, I guess)

 NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Dear Team,

my name is volker Bosch, i live in Germany and i have been following your youtube channel for a long time. Now I have some questions. I am a photographer with a current inventory of 60,000 photos and occasional jobs for video editing in 4K. I work with Apple IMac 2015 with Thunderbold 2. In the next few months I will get a current IMac. So far I have worked with the QNap TS-451A. The data transfer is very slow and the machine is clearly too loud when it is on the desk. Four Seagate Ironwolf 6TB hard drives are installed in the Qnap.
Now my questions:
1.) Would you work with a customer from Germany?
2.) Is it possible to retrofit this NAS with a Thunderbold card?
3.) Can I convert the hard disks with my data into a current QNap device without losing the data?
4.) What is your recommendation?

I look forward to your reply

Volker Bosch

 2nd NAS as backup?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, I have a DS415+ running 4 x 4TB, 7200rpm Ironwolf drives. It is used for office document storage (1x Mac, 1x MacBook), family photo and video media, iTunes, Scrivener, DevonThink and ProPresenter storage. I was running the NAS on SHR but continually seemed to run out of space. Forward-fast: I copied everything off the 415+ to external drives (total amount of ‘stuff’ just under 5tb). My old Mac (I’m awaiting desperately the M1 chip in new iMac) has a 1TB internal HDD. My iTunes (1.8TB) is on an external 5TB Seagate, my photos and videos (around 2TB) are on another Seagate external 5TB. Time Machine runs to an external LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt 5TB but is currently being swapped to a Seagate external 6TB. The LaCie will then become my new LightRoom photo library. All a mess really. So to my question:

I reset the NAS to RAID10 giving me 8TB of storage across two drives mirrored to the two other drives. Is it wise to have a second twin-disk 8TB NAS to serve as a backup to the DS415+? I’m stubbornly attached to Synology and Seagate so what would you recommend. I don’t want to pay for a cloud solution so other than an external drive attached to the 415+ by USB, what are my options?

Great site and superb instructional videos, thanks.

Trying to decide on which NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I want to make sure I don't overspend or underspend. I'm looking for a NAS to do the following:
1. A place for local file backups for my current backup software (Arq) for two computers
2. A place to store files that don't fit on my computer such as photos and music
3. The ability to access those files remotely on my Mac. (I have a VPN set up on my router, so I'm fine using the VPN if that is the solution.)

Nice to have would be the following:
1. The ability to display the photos on my TV
2. The ability to hook up a camera

I don't think I need more than two bays at this point. I'm looking at the following models:
1. DS220j
2. DS218play
3. DS218
4. DS220+

Is the DS220j too underpowered? Is the DS220+ too overpowered? Thanks!

Looking for NAS mainly for media streaming AWAY from home in 4K?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello. I have done some research on NAS systems and I am looking to get my first NAS soon. Here are my main needs: store and access pics, videos, and files from anywhere I am, store and stream large 4K media files (movies and TV shows) at home and away from home and on multiple devices simultaneously, store backups of iPhones and Macbooks.

I have been leaning to get the QNAP TVS-672XT. I like the speeds it offers with thunderbolt connectivity and the i3 processor will allow for 4k transcoding when using plex server (right?). Along with this bay, I am planning to get 5 "Seagate IronWolf 10TB NAS Hard Drive 7200 RPM 256MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s CMR 3.5" Internal HDD for RAID Network Attached Storage ST10000VN0008 - OEM" drives to put in the bay.

Will this setup meet my needs listed above? Especially the ability to stream in 4K away from home. I plan to share access to this NAS to my family that lives in other states across the US and I want the streaming to be able to run simultaneously in 4K for multiple people.

Let me know if this will work or if I should look at other options and if so, then what?

Thank you for the help!
