I need a advice picking a correct NAS device?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, I would like to ask your advice on NAS device. I plan to buy a NAS for my home lab, but I want to know what you would suggest to me buy?

I will have two purposes for NAS
1) use it for VMware vSphere Storages device for VMs. I am home labber, and I like to build all kinds of VMs for learning IT.
2) personal files (it would be nice if it has a thunderbolt connection for mac.)

Because the primary purpose is a home lab, it has to be very flexible and scalable. I want to buy step by step more HDDs in different sizes and create RAID/Storages pools among different HDDs/SSDs/nvme. NIC speed Min. 10Gbe.
Min bay number is 4. 6 or more are better.
Price as cheap as possible. Around 1000EUR. I have to buy drives as well.

Thank you

  QNAP Ts-H686?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello there,

Ive been strongly considering the QNAP TS-H686 with XeonD1602 but i did notice the tvs-672n(currently out of stock). which one should I consider?

my requirements are as follows:
1. Powerful unit with future upgrade options (adding a GPU, RAM, HDD/SSD/NvME later would be a plus)
2. I plan to start off with 3-4 4 tb drives as I feel the need to start small (wallet friendly), obviously with options to upgrade to higher TB drives like a 16 or 18tb
3. should have less power usage
4. Ability to setup a private cloud out of the box. I feel the need to completely do-away with Google Drive for long term costs and privacy concerns
5. Primary files types will be photos, videos and documents. Eventually should be in a position to integrate CCTV and some home automation.
6. Most important aspect, I would prefer something that has the least to no maintenance for the next 8-10 years.

Synology does not have the upgradable options and the flexibility offered by QNAP.

Please share your feedback or suggest any other model that will fit the bill.

Best,
Pradip

  NAS DS720+ max RAM capacity?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I'm new to NAS and will be using it for home office use (2 Macs + 1 iPhone + 1 iPad).

I would like to get confirmation regarding RAM capacity for DS720+. The information on Synology's data sheet is different from your website.

On Synology's data sheet for DS720+ (https://bit.ly/3mKPgDT), it says ....

MEMORY:
2 GB DDR4 onboard (expandable up to 6 GB)
DS720+ comes with 2 GB DDR4 onboard and can support up to 6 GB by adding one optional DDR4 non-ECC 4 GB SO-DIMM.

However, on your website (https://nascompares.com/ram/ds720-compatible-ram-upgrade/Wink, it says....

System Memory 4 GB DDR4
Memory Module Pre-installed – Soldered 4 GB (4 GB x 1)
Total Memory Slots 1
Memory Expandable up to 8 GB (4 GB + 4 GB) official

The max Synology recommends is 8GB DDR4. But you CPU spec says you could in theory upgrade up to 20GB.

Please clarify. Thanks so much.

NAS solution to improve performance and offload data from server?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

We are a small dental office that has about 1TB of patient data. Our dental management software is accessed by 10 workstations directly from the network shared drive on the server. We would like to accomplish the following:

1. Increase storage capacity
2. Improve performance of the data access and write
3. Be able to backup the data locally and securely

My initial thoughts are a NAS with SSD drives configured in RAID1 (2) or RAID10. It has been a long time since I have worked in IT and am rusty on benefits of the different RAID configurations. Initially I have looked into the Synology D920+ solution with 4 SSD drives. Any advice is appreciated!
