Will the Seagate Exos 14TB work properly with the 720+? The compatiblity list doesn't mention this type of hdd for the 710, but other older DS models are mentioned. List not updated yet? Or did I miss something.

DS220+ vs DS210J? |

Hi
First, great You Tube channel. I have a DS210J and it has served me great however I'm heavily getting into photography and found that my DS20J is too slow both to upload 100s of pictures at once and also to access via DLNA. I'm sure it has always been like that but I was a light user before and maybe I didn't mind. I'm ready to upgrade and I'm considering the 220+. My needs is a 2 bay to use one HD as the main one and the second one as the backup + external drive as second backup.
I don't know how much upload/download speed improvement I will get from this or anther Synology that would be worth investing money in it.

I Just Bought A DS1621+, I'm Running 6 - 12Tb HDDs In Raid 5. Is It Possible To Run 4 SNV3400-400G To Have 1.6Tb Of Cache? This Would Make The System Have 2% Cache. 2 Drives Would Be In The Internal Slots And 2 Drives Would Be On The E10M20-T1. Thank You For Your Time And Help On This Matter.

Synology 1819+ with the free card or the Qnap TVS 873? |

Hi Saw your review of both the 1819+ with the free card and the Qnap 873... In terms of use where i would be using the NAS units for hosting VMs, Media (plex server) would you much more recommend the Qnap rather than the Synology unit?
Seems like the Qnap has more going for it based on VM and plex... is this still the case?

SynologyAssistant for Mac? |

I ordered a Synology DS220+ after you you assured me that it would be able to host Time Machine backups of multiple Macs. (Thank you for your quick and clear reply.)
Now that I have the DS220+, I turned to your video "Synology NAS Setup Guide2020" on YouTube. All went well until I downloaded the SynologyAssistant app from the Synology web site.
It was rejected by Big Sur (Mac OS v.11.1) with the following messages: '“SynologyAssistant.app” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.'
I seem to be at a dead end.
What can I do?

DAS options 2020? |

Hey there,
Found a few articles on your site about DAS devices. I've been internet sleuthing for a while to try to find the best options and feel like I'm almost there. Let me set some context first.
So, I live in a condo, two TVs, both with some Plex Client (Roku or Shield).
I have an Intel NUC running Windows that runs Plex, Torrenting software, and Backblaze.
My current storage is a 4 drive Mediasonic Proraid device with a setup of 16TB in a RAID 0 configuration (yikes, I know).
I want to keep a hardware RAID on the DAS, rather than having Windows do a Software RAID mostly because I don't trust Windows to do that for me.
I'm looking to get a new DAS device, but am stuck in decision paralysis. My current options are:
- Another Mediasonic Proraid
- QNAP TR004
- Drobo 5C
For Drives I'm looking to get 4x10TB WD Red Pro's.
I was just about to buy the QNAP TR004 and then I found some folks complaining about read/write speed and now I'm back to the drawing board.

IOS photo/video backup methodology? |

My iPhone automatically backs up its photos and videos to the Amazon photo storage that is part of Prime. That works well but I'm about out of storage space (5GB) for videos (photo storage is unlimited). I don't backup my phone's photos and videos to iCloud, since that would quickly exceed the 5GB that Apple gives me. I have both a new Synology DS920+ and an old DS213j with lots of available storage.
I would like to mimic how Amazon's photo and video storage operates on my iPhone, except use one of my Synology NAS units as the "cloud." Is there a practical and effective way to do that with just my iPhone and the NAS device? Or would I be better off figuring out how to copy all the videos I have stored in Amazon Prime's 5GB to my NAS and then delete them all from the Amazon cloud to free up another 5GB for new video storage? And, when I get back to another 5GB stored on Amazon, rinse and repeat?
Based on my reading, I haven't seen anything that works directly between the iPhone and Synology NAS that appears as seamless as how the iPhone and Amazon storage function together (backing up all new files essentially automatically with little or no manual effort). Thanks for your assistance and any suggestions.

New NAS Purchase Questions Regarding Speed ? |

Hi, I make deepfake videos. My 3 computers have different abilities and I loved the idea of accessing the deepfakes from a central NAS drive and being able to start training on computer A, stop it from training, and finish it up on computer C because it had a better GPU and on the last step of making a deepfake video it does require more VRAM to process everything the way I like. After watching some comparisons online I went with the DS920+. I put 3 10TB WD Red drives in it. Works great. I mapped the drive as drive Z and I am currently able to train 3 deepfakes from the 3 different computers simultaneously. I tried to find out if speed would be sufficient ahead of time, but with all the variables involved coupled with the fact that there aren't that many people that do simultaneous deepfakes off a NAS, I didn't have the best results getting info. So, I went with the one I have and it does work decently. However, it's way slower than a local hard drive and I'd like to get a 2nd NAS if it's possible it will work much more efficiently. The 920 honestly isn't horrible. It's just noticeably slower. Once the software loads the model it trains at the same speed as a local hard drive. But starting the software, loading the models, when it does backups or when it needs to access things, it's probably 4-5 times slower, and there is a lot more waiting. So would a 10 gbit network solution improve this? Or is the WD Red platter drives that are the bottleneck here?
One other thing that isn't as big of a factor, but wanted to verify this... when transferring the deepfake ingredients to the NAS. The source folder and destination folder both contain thousands of 512x512 images. Probably between 10-20k images. They're small.... Someone told me that windows file handling is really crappy for copying thousands of small files like that and it will bottleneck and not be any faster even if I do upgrade to 10gbit or get SSD drives for the new NAS. Because we transferred them to the NAS on a test and it didn't even get close to 1 gbit speeds during those transfers. Bigger files transferred much quicker. But I'm guessing he's right in saying that when moving those thousands of images, it doesn't matter what config I have, it's going to remain at the speed it's at now because of windows file handling?
That being said/asked... The transferring isn't as big of a deal as all the hang ups when starting training, installing the software, loading of the model and source/destination files before it trains and just waiting for it to start processes. Sorry this was so long, but I wanted to attempt to not leave any pertinent info out.
Given all that (assuming you made it through the entire message here haha) do you think upgrading to SSD or 10Gbit would improve things very noticeably? So it would be more like using a local hard drive? Thanks!!!
