  switches

I need two bash functions as follows...
CreateVLAN()
DeleteVLAN()

These functions must run fully unattended, and must never require a reset or reboot of the switch.

I am a noob to programmable switches. Could you recommend what switches that could support such functionality? Does higher level software exist that would support this functionality over multiple brands of switches?

Thanks!
Kendal

  Synology and mixed drive sizes
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-16-2024, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, thanks for the great videos and information provided via YouTube.

Am on the cusp of buying a synolgy nas. Budget does not permit me to fully populate each bay from day one so that will occur in stages. To start I will be using what I have already so the question is....

If I install a mix of drives (1x 12TB & 2 x 8TB drives) I know that I can create a raid 5 array based on the smallest drives (8TB). That would in effect leave 4TB. unused on the 14TB drive. Can I use this 4TB in any way, a separate pool, logical drive or what?
Hope that makes sense.

Thank you
/Alan

  Orico 4 bay
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-16-2024, 01:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I moved from WD External HD to a Synology NAS. I now have 2 8TB and 2 6TB of external hard drives available to us as back up for my NAS. I can "shuck" the drives and possibly use a Orico 4 bay and plug it in to another network computer. Or should I consider one of the NAS case builds like Jonsbo/ Here's my first idea: https://www.amazon.com/ORICO-Docking-Station-Duplicator-Black/dp/B07G2WRB97/

  Jonsbo N3 build
Posted by: Swedie - 06-16-2024, 11:52 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (5)

Hi!
I'm planning on building a Jonsbo N3-build. Main usage will be media storage and Plex Server.
Just ordered three 18TB drives, since I've already got one. Planning to use these in a raidz1, giving me about 50TB to start with.

Was pretty set for a build as follows.

  • Gigabyte B760I Aorus PRO, 4x sata ports and 2x m.2 (one which could be used for additional sata ports in the future)
  • Intel Core i5-12400
  • 1x32GB of ram
  • be quiet! SFX Power 3 450W
  • 1TB nvme drive as boot drive.
My plan was to run Proxmox and having truenas inside of that along with a debian VM.

But the I saw the CWWK Q670 which looks interesting. If I would go that route I wouldn't need a m.2 -> sata converter if I were to expand. But I would aslo need a more expensive CPU as the minimum supported is 12500.

Is there anything more that I really need to take in consideration before choosing?
Thanks for any feedback!

Secondly I wondering if I purchased 2 Asus flash store nas The first one would be used as a primary use and the second one as the backup. I am wondering if my primary Nas get damaged therefore I was required to replace it for a third one can you explain how i can restore the file from the backup nas and use my new nas as my primary nas I would b

Posted by: Enquiries - 06-14-2024, 04:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

at the moment i could buy a new 1522+ for CHF 716.00 without Drives but i have some dirves and need just to buy 1*4TB to get 6.3TB in usable space with SHR
or i just saw a used 923+ with 4*4TB IronWolf for CHF 800 which was about a year in use and is still under warranty till 6/19/2025

  Home/Small buisness NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-13-2024, 09:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys,
I've watched a heap of your videos and being a bit a tech geek, I get what you're saying on each video but after watching multiple videos, I'm still asking myself which NAS I need (regardless of NAS company).
I'm more than capable of building my own NAS but I'm time poor. I was after an all in one solution for my needs. Small business backup, kids photos backup, Raid redundincies, software capable (cloud photos, file access, plex for media room etc).

With your knowledge of NAS systems, I was hoping you would have a video on this type of system as I thought it would suit most home/small business users.

I don't care which company that it comes from, what i'm after is....... This is what you need to buy in 2024 to cover what you need .
Do I need 10Gbps for small business back up and possibly streaming media (possibly transcoding), can I get away with 1Gbps for what I require.
I'm happy to spend a reasonal amount of money but i'm not spending 2.5K on a NAS for home

  Synology vs DIY NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-13-2024, 08:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am looking to purchase a NAS drive for home use to store family photos, videos, Movies, documents and backups.

I was comparing the Synology DS 423+ and the DS 923+. I am also open to create a similar form factor DIY solution with comparable performance or better.

For storage I was debating between 4x 6TB WD RED Plus HDDs with 1 drive raid redundancy similar to Synology SHR. Would you be able to assist in choose the ideal solution. I do have a seperate virtualisation micro pc which i can use for dockers and virtual machines.
