DXP4800 Plus Hardware |

1) USB C Port : I read the USB C port on DXP4800 Plus is actually TB4 port but they've only enabled it on the 6 and 8 bay? Is there a way to enable this if so?
2) m.2 NVME Slots: I read a review that said one is 3X4 and the other is 4X4. NAS Compares says 2 x 4x4 m.2 NVME slots. For the 8 bay review it states one is Gen 4x4 the second slot is Gen 4x4 but has been downgraded to Gen 3x2 or 8G transfers. The 3rd slot for the operating system is Gen 3x1 slot...Can't see any info on Ugreen website.
Do they have to be the same to create a raid with the two SSD's? Should I save money and buy the lower generation SSD?
3) SSD Cache vs Pool:
With the 2xNVME Slots, is it either cache or create a storage pool? (READ ONLY caching ~or~ READ/WRITE CACHING?) You can’t use Write Caching on its own? Read/Write caching requires two separate drives?
Can you get around that by Read/Write caching on one SSD (by partitioning it into separate volumes) and create a storage pool on the other SSD?

QNAP Jellyfin Update |

Hi Guys,
I followed your QNAP Jellyfin install (the easy way) and I want to know how I can update the application without losing metadata etc.?
Do I need to uninstall or just install the new version over the top?
I have done a bit of googling with no luck as most people are using docker or container station.
Also thankyou for all your videos, love your work. Helped me a lot in choosing a NAS for home. Spent a lot of time using your videos for research.
Landed on at QNAP TS-664. Safe to say I am out of my depth but learning every day thanks to you.
Cheers.

New NAS Recommendation Request! |

I am looking to upgrade from a WD PR2100 and would love your recommendations!
My primary uses are Plex, photo storage (I have approx 150k photos in raw format that I edit in Lightroom, Photoshop, Luminar and Topaz tools), video storage and editing with Vegas Pro video editing software, and general PC file storage.
I have decided to go with a 4 bay NAS this time round and have it narrowed down to the following choices:
ASUSTOR AS5404T, QNAP TS-464, Terramaster F4-424, Synology 423+.
My new PC motherboard supports 2.5 GB Ethernet so down the road I'll upgrade the switch this NAS will plug into as well - thus having support for 2.5 GB Ethernet in this NAS makes sense to me. ... no need for 10 GB Ethernet support though as no other devices in my home support it.
From the numerous reviews I've come across, I am leaning towards the ASUSTOR for the hardware features / value but am wondering how stable the sw platform is. Given that QNAP is 2+ years old now, is the hw becoming dated? Terramaster may have similar sw concerns as ASUSTOR? Synology seems to have the best sw platform, but is perhaps the weakest from a hw point of view (don't think it supports 2.5 GB ethernet either). But Synology might be the most secure (I think the other 3 got hit with ransomware over the past few years)??
I am generally comfortable using computers and IT in general, but I want to spend my time editing photos, and watching my Plex movies not solving and debugging NAS IT issues so ease of use in the software environment is important to me. As noted above though I have fairly basic NAS needs though - I won't be installing a bunch of security cameras, or running virtual machines so perhaps the software provided by all of the vendors will suffice for my needs.
Any suggestions folks can provide me on the above would be hugely appreciated!!
Finally, one additional question, with any of the above NAS devices, is there sw available such that I can back up my iphone and iPad to one of these four NAS devices instead of using iCloud? Similarly, would my wife be able to back up her Google Pixel phone to one of these NAS devices instead of using her Google Drive?
Many thanks in advance for your help,
Gary

What should I get? |

Dear NAS Compares,
I don't have a NAS and have never had one. I'm a movie enthusiast and have over a thousand of movies that are around 20-160GB each. I have an Nvidia Shield, that is now locally fed with my media files via local 20TB hard drives. At the moment I love Kodi, but I also have gotten a Plex Lifetime contract with a NAS in mind.
I also have a small amount of personal files that I'd also like to back up.
In my ideal situation I have a NAS that I can expand every time I'm reaching my storage limits. Therefore, I'm thinking of having a 8 to 12 bay NAS and fill it up slowly with 20TB drives. I'd like to start with 3 drives RAID6.
I always thought Synology was the place to go, but now I'm reluctant because of their new harddrive policies. Now I don't know what kind of device to get nor the type of hard drives.
I'd like to be able to download from news groups and torrent sites and be able to access my files in 4K on my Shield. 2 People max.
Can you help me? Best regards! Niels

interested in DVA1622 - I have a problem with a couple of people with dogs whose owners don't clear up after them. Would this be able to identify them (and their dogs) when they walk past.
Thanks for all the videos etc.

Hi there. With your assistance i recently set up an iSCSI drive on my Synology NAS (1019+) for my IMac. Having set this up I can access the new drive via Finder but cannot see it on the NAS / Filestation. Is it possible to see the drive on the NAS ? In particular I wish to ensure i am backing up the drive on my NAS Idrive application. If not I presume I can back up the drive on Idrive via the alternative online access (ie not via the NAS app ) ? Please let me know what you think.
Thanks Mike

Synology 423+ / 923+ / 1522+/other? |

Thank you for your time and help.
We are estimating 10GB a week (recorded videos from a 200MP camera phone) for data upload to the NAS we will build. I'm overestimating and building an 12TB Raid 5 array using Three Synology 4TB drives at 5400RPM (The HAT-3300).
This upload will be via a link with password and expiration from the NAS, so external download outside our internal network.
Our router is a 1GBS connection where we see 500-700MBS tested from each of our wired and wireless devices. Due to this I am implementing a tplink Layer 2 managed switch to aggregate the RJ45 LAN ports.
Is the 423+, 923+ or 1522+ (or Other) the best recommendation for this application. We may also put 2 IP cams on as a VM or simply a folder but I want to limit the surveillance storage to 2GB initially. eventually we may build a site where people may view the videos,
I appreciate your time and help. (Of course I asked Synology but got mixed answers from 1 rep to the next).

Terramaster F4-223 NAS Firewall sttings |

Hello
I am in the process of setting up my Terramaster F4-223 NAS security firewall and I want to allow Plex server on the NAS to have access to the internet so it works properly.
If I set a allow rule for my local network of a IP range of 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.255 and select all ports to access the NAS without allowing outside access, will this interfere with the operation of Plex with this rule.
Thanks in advance.
Mark.
PS. You have one of the best Youtube channels out there hands down. Keep up the amazing work.

Ideal Plex Server |

Hi there,
I currently have a qnap ts-462 (unused, new) but thinking that this will not meet the needs of my Plex server (nothing too big - I have about 250 movies - majority at 1080p, some ripped 4k/UHD) and about 25 or so shows (5TB). I am thinking unless I buy an expansion card (QM2-2P2G2T : 2 x PCIe Gen3 M.2 NVMe SSD & 2 x 2.5GbE port expansion card to enhance performance) to improve performance and expand memory to 4GB this may not be enough. I am thinking if I am spending that additional money, maybe it's better to buy another unit all together much more robust. I was planning to spend about 1200 and was wondering what you would recoomend? Thanks so much!

I'm planning to buy a 2TB SSD for my PS5 and have settled on the Seagate FireCuda 530. Could you help me decide which heatsink would be best to use with it? Your advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
