  First NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-05-2024, 11:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi everyone at NASCompares.
I'm really interested in acquiring a NAS for my home. Mainly as a Plex server for watching movies in 4k at the best resolution and quality and storing photos or documents. Any clue what could work?
Thank you for all your work and knowledge.

  Advice for nas server
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-05-2024, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I've asked you guys for advice once before but it was a year ago.
Now when I finally can afford the system I felt the need to ask you again and I got some followup questions as well.

I was recommended to use QNAP TVS-H674-I5-32G
For my home system.
Used for streaming transcoding media, long time storage and home cinema system.
If you don't know any other new servers that would work better then I'll stick with this one.
The hard drives I'm thinking of using 3x of
Western Digital Red Pro WD8003FFBX 8TB.
2 mirror drives and 1 as backup, if that's a good way to go about it?
Something I've been thinking about is if it's possible to use an nvme ssd to store the system files and software in for a quicker respond? And the hdds for all other media, an example of nvme below
WD Red SN700 1TB NVMe SSD

WD red drives in general seem to be reliable and rarely break. Seems to be a good option.

Thanks fot all advice you can give me.
regards, anton

  Synology Surveillance Station
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-04-2024, 11:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I followed your Youtube video on setting up Surveillance Station using same schedule etc, but it doesn't appear to be actually recording anything as when I go the the Recordings page and select Recording List it gives a message "Please go to IP Camera and check the recording schedule to see if you have activated video recording."
The cameras I am using are Reolink E1 Pro and they are streaming RTSP and working fine when I hit the Test Connection or look at them on the Monitor Station.

  QNAP vs. Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-03-2024, 08:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

In terms of best for using as a Plex server, would you recommend the Synology DS1522 (or different model better) or would a QNAP TS-873A be better. I would like it to be future-proof and optimal as a Plex server that will need to do some transcoding, but mostly internal (inside home).

Wink NAS upgrade has given me too many options!
Posted by: Stuw - 09-03-2024, 06:54 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hi,

I have a QNAP 253BE and it has served me well for years! I have just given it a bit of upgrade and boost today by adding some SSD's. I'm just setting it back up and not sure if I am configuring it in the best way...

The NAS only serves film and music media. The only apps I use are Emby server for films and a Plex server for music. Also have SABNZB+ installed. That's about it. How would you configure my set up?

QNAP 253BE
16GB RAM
2 x 4TB Seagate Ironwolf Hard Drives
QNAP QM2-2S-220A expansion card
2 x 2TB Western Digital Red SA500 SSD's

I have just set up both SSDs as the system (raid 0) and then the HDD also as raid 0 for media archive. My thinking behind this was have the SSD's for system and apps, along with new downloaded content and then HDD as the main media store. Looking in the NAS admin and options now available to me, should I have gone for...

1 x SSD as system and app drive, 1 x SSD for cache and HDD for media archive.

Would this improve things even further? Currently it's now performing loads better on SSD's than previously on just HDD. Would adding a cache make much difference for me? Media files are always large files and the NAS only has 1 or 2 devices connecting to it at the same time.

Also would the expansion card bottle neck having both the cache and system running through it?

Anyways, I thought it was a good time to ask the pro's before I finish up the set up. It wouldn't be a major job to start again and reconfigure the setup.

Let me know what you think.
Cheers
Stu

  Nas selection
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2024, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm looking to buy a NAS. I have a 7 gig fiber line with 10 gig wired switches setup at my house, with 3 - quad band wifi7 routers. I'm looking to setup the NAS at my house primarily for a Plex server, and a desktop/laptop backup. I've narrowed the selection down between two. Either the Qnap TVS-H874T(with the i9 and 64 gigs of RAM) or the qnap TVS-H1688X. Which one of these would you purchase, or, is there another one that you would recommend? Thank you!

Hello lads, thanks for all your work and knowledge!

Would you recommend the TS-432X-4G as a good NAS for parking/ archiving large video projects from edit suites as well as light editing work?
I need to upgrade asap.

Thank you!

  storage and editing nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2024, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello I've been tasked to set yp a nas for a small production company working on a on going documentary about a multi-artists project. Additionally short single artist based clips will be produced.
The long form doc is transcoded and edited on Avid Media Composer on a local hard drive by a single editor. He'll use the nas exclusively as source storage for footage, not for editing.
The producer would like to have additional editors, working on premiere or davinci, to edit directly on the nas all the additional clips. Those editors will work mostly remotely.
Also ideally the nas will be used by the colourist.
What nas system/config do you think will be best for this workflow? Will it be necessary to upgrade the hardware on the editors computer and on the network the nas will be connected to?
Is it possible to keep the footage safe from deletion by the editors while letting them editing on the nas? How to protect the nas from ransomware?

  Asustor vs Terramaster
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2024, 03:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I currently have a Terramaster F2-210. Its gotten old, new applications are not supported, and want to use more advanced apps and functions not available on this model. I am planning to upgrade my NAS to a newer model, with Intel processors which will allow for new applications and NAS OS systems in it. I was considering the Terramaster F2-424, but have been reading about Asustor AS5402T. Now both are new, capable of a lot more than my current model, slight different in RAM, totally separate OS, but I can't find any comparisons between the two and which one seems better. They are even priced the same, so I could pick any, but I don't know which would suit me best. I am used to the TOS from Terramaster, but trying a new OS won't be too bad as long as they are easy to manage. But would love to hear or read about the operability, functionality, and why one is better, slightly better, or way better than the other one. Maybe OS is the difference, security, app catalog, etc, i don't kno

  New to NASs
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2024, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello There,

I'm a noob, like I know enough to get in trouble. I've taken a deep dive into all things NAS in the last 2 months. Is TrueNas too much for me? or should I stick to something like Synology? Im not liking the lack of upgrades in the home user Synology lineup...

Maybe Im selling myself short, I know pretty much all the components of a mother board but... I've never actually installed RAM on a MB before.

I have Plex and a MAC so I'd like to run Time Machine and a growing library of media.

Thanks for all you do!
