Free NAS OS for TM F4-423
Posted by: Vaulenst - 09-11-2024, 10:28 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi all,

sorry for my english (Italy here).

I have a Terramaster F4-423, a 4 HD + 2 SSD bay NAS using TOS 5.1 os with 20GB of no-ecc ram (4gb + 16gb).
There is an internal USB port with the original TM pen drive connected to and another free usb external port.
It contains the following drives: 1TB SSD, 2TB HD, 3TB HD, 8TBHD, 18TB HD, all of them formatted in BTRFS.

I'm a very newbie with nas; I never set up a RAID and I roughly know what it is.
I set up every drive separately as a single drive with it's own storage pool.
I set up a couple of rsync scheduled backup of the shared folders I care more to an external drive.

I know I am renouncing to redoundancy and I have many fragmented shares, but it's ok to me: I have very little data I care of (photos and docs) and I want to use all the available space.
Also I love to be able to hot-extract a drive and connect it to an usb port of my pc accessing all the data it contains.

On this NAS I use:
- a web server supporting mysql and php
- dockers
- Plex
- Jellyfin
- qBittorrent
- Virtualbox

I am considering to replace the TOS operating system and I read some pages about and I went to the following possibilities:
1. TRUENAS SCALE
2. UNRAID
3. OPEN MEDIA VAULT

Truenas scale seems the best choice but it seems more difficult to understand, and I am a newbie; also it seems to me, as for what I understood, that I am stuck with ZFS and so I couldn't extract a drive and connect to a linux pc accessing it's data easily.
Also it seems to require ECC memory.
Also I couldn't understand if it's possible to keep all disks separated or I have to make some sort of raid.
Also seems a parity disk is needed, possibly the more sized one.

Unraid seems a better solution for me as it natively support docker and virtualization.
But it's not free and a lifetime license is expensive.
Also I still have not understood if I can keep all disk separated. The hot-swap with my pc seems possible as it supports the same file systems as TOS.
But it seems not have user GROUPS.

OMV seems ok, but maybe a little simple to do all the funcionalities I listed before; for example I don't know if it can provide a web server or some virtualization.

Any suggestion will be appreciate.

TY

  Home media NAS

I have been struggling with a decision on what to do about NAS at home. Currently I hang aa TerraMaster DAS off my Openmediavalut server. This is not an ideal solution in my mind. One of my main hangups with current NAS offerings is the sheer cost of a frame and OS.

Today I found a vid on the Synology 1522+ While it's more reasonably priced than other options, I don't know if it's the right solution.

Hardware Haven present an alternative in a Lenovo P520. So I don't know if I drop $229.98 for - Lenovo ThinkStation P520 Workstation 1X 3.70GHz W-2135 64GB RAM No GPU/ HDD/ OS. And build my NAS with TruNas or Unraid.

  New NAS Purchase
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-10-2024, 04:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi
I would like a Nas to store Videos and data also possibly connect to my TV to play the movies.

I was thinking of the Asutor Drive store 4 Pro v2 4bay possibly Ironwolf or WD Red plus 3.5.
What do you think.

Is raid easy to set up?

Your help would be appreciated.

Best wishes
Eric T

Is it true that the status LEDs on the DX4800 Plus no longer work with the TrueNas installation?
There are some projects on Github that have created a workaround using a cronjob.

  TNAS vs Raid 5
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-08-2024, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm new to NAS but not IT in general. I bought a Terramaster F4-423 and dropped 4 12TB drives in. I don't ever plan on using mixed capacity drives so , given this, is there any real benefit to using TRAID vs a RAID 5. I will probably move to TrueNAS or UnRAID in the future, but have 0 experience with them.

  Finding the right NAS motherboard
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-06-2024, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello can you help me find a NAS motherboard that will fit my needs? I would like to build my own DIY NAS that will have a small form factor, be powerful, and power efficiency. I will be planning to run a Plex/Jellyfin server with 4k/8k transcoding. I will also be running lots of Docker containers, possibly VMs, and storing my photos that use AI machine learning algorithms. It needs to have at least a 10gbps LAN and 5+ SATA ports. Maybe future proof it. All the motherboards I could find did not match my needs. Thank you.

  Replacement for Drobo5C
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-06-2024, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good Morning!
I have a Drobo 5C with 5x2tb inside right now...

As drobo is no longer a viable company, I am concerned with keeping all my tax/pay/backups on this system in case of hardware failure of the unit itself.
I love the fact it is basically self-maintaining, but I am looking for a newer system to replace it.
The new system can be either attached directly to my router, or to a computer I use specifically to share out the DRobo...
I would love to be able to re-use the drives in my drobo as well Smile

What are your thoughts?

  Additional storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-06-2024, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a gaming laptop with a limited storage space. And games keep on getting bigger. 100GB+
After watching dozens of videos about NAS and DAS I kind of see the TerraMaster D5 Hybrid and D8 Hybrid as most likely candidates. (any other good competitors for these DAS?)
My idea is to use the Raid 1 on 2 (either 4 TB, or preferably 8 TB) SSD's and keep all my photos, videos and other important stuff.
All 4 NVMe SSD's (either 2 or 4 TB depending on price) would be for gaming.

And if it's D8 Hybrid, the last 3 slots would be most likely software Raid 0 for 3 4TB SATA SSD's. for whatever else I might need it for. (E.g. games, programs, movies etc.)

Or is there a better way to expand the storage for gaming?

  Ideal Plex Server
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-06-2024, 02:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Thanks for answering my earlier question. I have a general question - for $1500 maximum, what would you say the best NAS would be for using Plex and it's associated tasks (transcoding, etc.). I would also be using this server as a file server to backup files from my computer and related network devices. Thanks so much! (the $1500 would include any addons/upgrades)

Regards,
