  My first NAS :)
Posted by: sisterNAS - 03-28-2025, 08:06 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello! I'm Pau!

My father and I are in the process of purchasing our first NAS, but we still have a few uncertainties about which model to choose.

As "semi-professional photographers," our primary goal is to use the NAS to store and manage our RAW files, and edit them through Lightroom. We also want the ability to access and work on our files remotely. This is our main focus right now, but we’re aware of the many other features a NAS offers, and once we get this set up, we’d love to explore other options like Synology Photos.

We’re leaning towards a Synology NAS because of its user-friendly interface, but we’re debating between the DS923+ and DS1522+ models. We’ve also heard about some promised updates—should we wait for those, or would it be better to go ahead with one of these models now?

For storage, we plan to start with two 10TB or 12TB HDDs, using one for redundancy. As our storage needs grow, we’ll add more drives.

What do you think? Which NAS would you recommend for our use case?

Thank you in advance!

  Terramaster NAS RAID Configuration
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-28-2025, 07:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

TLDR: Can I combine three drives into one storage pool and RAID it with an equal sized drive? Then setup a cloud service to offsite backup select folders.

I have a TerraMaster F4-210 NAS I have previously used for simple media storage along with a 6tb USB drive for my Kodi. I have recently purchased a 12tb drive and I have three other drives (6tb+5tb+1tb) equaling 12tb. I would like to combine the three drives into one storage pool and mirror it with the 12tb drive. When I attempt to do this, I cannot see where to format the drives and they are much smaller than their capacity. Not sure what I am doing wrong here.

My important data is in the cloud as an archive. I would like to use a cloud service (Google, Mega, Box, etc) to backup offsite in case my server is compromised (which has happened in the past).

  NAS recommendation

Hi,

I currently have a NetGear ReadyNAS 214 with 4x2Tb WD Red Plus on RAID 5.

I am looking to upgrade as I am getting low on space, and feel the hardware limitation of my current setup.

What would you recommend for me to look at? NVMe would be a plus to avoid a maximum of Hardware failure from the disks.

Also, I use Plex outside my home on mobile and tablets.

Thanks a million

  Qnap - find duplicate files
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-28-2025, 05:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've been trying to find a way to find duplicates on my Qnap NAS. It would be great to see a video from you demonstrating the ways this could be done. None seem really easy.

OS on a single M.2 risks?
Posted by: mdt12 - 03-28-2025, 04:45 AM - Forum: Existing NAS users - Replies (2)

I just bought my TerraMaster F6-424 and I'm in the process of setting it up. I read other threads and understand how to setup TOS on a M.2 SSD but I'm wondering what the risks are and how to mitigate them if possible.

My plan: install TOS on a M.2 SSD without any raid, create a storage pool on it for (temporary storage only), create another main storage pool with HDDs (TRAID) for long term storage.

My question: IF the M.2 SSD fails, I assume the TOS installation and the storage pool on the M.2 would be gone, but will I loose (unable to access) my data on the HDD storage pool? Or can I just replace the M.2, reinstall TOS, and data in HDD pool will be intact?

Is there any way to backup TOS to say a USB drive? Or should I not do this at all and go with either a RAID1 for M.2 or just install TOS on HDDs?

Hope my question is clear. Thanks!!

  QNAP ts-464 -- remote use/M2 cache
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-27-2025, 04:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Robbie, Thanks for the help previously. I'm up and running - media working in home on samsung tvs and have access on my cell. However, i'm reading a variety of controversy on using ssd as a cache -- so not sure what to do there and I would like to allow my family to remotely connect to my server (5-7 users) but with Plex raising their prices I'm not sure the best path to take. I'd appreciate your thoughts. if plex is best option i can jump on the pass before the prices go up -- but I dont know the best path here. Thank you!
