  Backing up my NAS DS1522+
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-12-2024, 09:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I have a Synology DS1522+ with a 4TB USB drive plugged into it. The NAS backups up daily to that drive. That 4TB drive has now died and I want to add more drives to the my NAS. This means the 4TB is large enough either. I have 5x 3TB drives left over from Drobo. Is there a Synology NAS that I can plug into the 1522+ and use as a backup. I would also be happy to do it over the network.

Thanks for the help.

Best wishes

Michael

  Understanding EXOS drive literature
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-12-2024, 02:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

I have a 3.5" HHD DAS which needs populating. Based on my interaction with these products over a period of 10 yrs I have decided to go with SeaGate. I am interested in 2TB capacity drives and for my personal reliability preference ....I've chosen the EXOS series of drives. I know its way overkill, but for me it's a culture that I've used for many years in most of my lifestyle.
The interface is SATA. Now Seagate from viewing has multiple Exos drives with varying letter designates. I chatted with one online assistant and she was able to explain at least the 512 N & 512 e abbreviations. I eventually got that. However, I am seeing on various sites selling these drives various descriptions for the apparently same appearance drive.
Assist me in acquiring the correct 2-4TB Exos drive for a SATA interface 4 Bay DAS. Amazon has it as 512e & Seagate has it listed as 512N. Dont want to buy the wrong one.

  Jellyfin
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-12-2024, 01:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Hello, I installed JellyFin per our YouTube "Easy way" video and worked great. I managed to lose/forget my password for it and now can regain access or find a way to reset my password. Can you tell me how to either reset the password or fully uninstall so I can start over?

Thanks in advance!

  Backup External SSD to Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-11-2024, 05:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

The only way I have found to backup an external SSD is using Synology Drive, but this expects the drive to be connected at all times otherwise it shows abnormal status in red and doesn't show the up to date statue.

If I try Hyperbackup it doesn't show the USB device as a potential source, only a destination.

Any suggestions?

Kind regards
Peter

  Synology Migration?
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-11-2024, 04:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

I currently have a DS220j and am getting a DS415+ used. My 220j has 2-12TB drives and has a Raid-1 configuration. 1 Pool and 1 Volume. I'm currently running a hyperback on it to a USB external drive as I type. My main question is, can I set up the new NAS with Raid-10 and keep my data using Synology's migration tool, or will I need to set up the 4 discs of the 412+ first and do a Raid-10 and then do a restore from backup to get my data onto the new NAS?

  NAS/DAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-11-2024, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Hi,

Since DropBox stopped with unlimited cloudstorage I need to create something new that works for me. I'm a Filmmaker that works mostly alone but sometimes with others. I'm totally new to the NAS and DAS workflow and if you could help me with some suggestions I would really appreciate!

What I want:

- It must met the 3-2-1 way of storage. (because dropbox is now gone, this is not the case anymore for me.)
- I work with 4k/8k RAW files so I like my hot storage to be ssd 4 to 8 tb's
- My cold storage can be hdd, something like 18tb, perhaps two drives.
- Some future proof setup would be nice.

I you know a perfect system for a filmmaker let me know!

Thank you for your time, really appreciated!

Kinds regards,

Jeroen Uriot

  NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-11-2024, 12:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

I'm have a Synology DS413j used as a simple NFS/SMB share for an OSMC media centre (Kodi) and for accessing media files from a Linux desktop and Windows laptops.

The NAS is running SHR with 4xWD HDDs giving 3.6TB at 64% utilisation.

I have a separate cheap (crappy) NVR with 2 IP cameras which will increase to 4. The NVR is next to useless for reviewing footage, especially searching for events, and I want rid.

The DS413j is 12 years old and I'm of a mind to replace it with once which combines the roles of a simple media server and surveillance station. I am considering QNAP given the 8 included camera licenses.

Does this make sense? I am leaning towards the TS-264 but could you please give me your thoughts. Also any guidance on drive configuration (HDD/SDD) would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Device to be used as Apple Time Machine & backup for Windows PC. Ablility to back up our Android phones a plus. Want 2 LAN ports (one for each computer) & wireless connectivity for backing up NAS to One Drive. Also want to be able to use as a plex server (both on local wifi & remotely). Want to run RAID 1, 5, 6 or 10 and want it to be upgradable.
