  UPS rec for Synology 923+
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-11-2024, 02:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Looking for a basic UPS to keep my 923+ from failing during potential power outage.

Seems like your guide recommends the Amazon basics model for me, but it's not on the Synology compatibility list. I would like to have one that can communicate with the NAS to safely shut-down if necessary. is APC BE600M1 right for me?

  building system pool tvs-h874
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-10-2024, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

referencing qnap uk's video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0wVCy7HQIk setting up QuTS hero on a TVS-h874 they recommend building the system pool on the SSD (if installed). they leave it setup as RAID1 by default. as its a system pool and my media will be stored on my spinning HDDs in RAID6 what happens if they system pool fails if i were to set it up as RAID0? will my data be gone on my HDD's also or can i just put new SSD's in and rebuild the NAS. is there a benefit to using RAID1 for the system pool. for reference im using 2x 2TB pci-e gen4 drives as the SSD's as i had them lying around from a previous pc Build

New to NAS - Upgrading from a Dying Deobo
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-10-2024, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've been running Plex on a Mac Mini for some years now. (I currently have an M1 Mac Mini). I bought a Drobo YEARs ago, and have occasionally added or upgraded HDs, but not in some time, and currently have 12 TB in drives installed. One of the drives is failing and I think it's time to stop being lazy and upgrade to NAS. I've been reading reviews of the Qnap TS-264-8G and came across your site, which seems useful, thorough and, as far as I can tell, not particularly biased.

Despite many years of Drobo use (two of the drives are at least 10 years old), and time figuring out Plex, I've been slow and lazy when it comes to NAS. But I think now is as good a time as any to make the move. I was thinking of using the TS-264-8G and adding two Seagate 8TB drives that I found on the QNAP compatibility list. Before I purchased anything I thought it made sense to get your thoughts, as I expect I'll be spending a lot of time at your site trying to set the thing up and working out bugs. Thanks.

  Upgrade from DS115j
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-09-2024, 07:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi NasCompare
Our old DS115j (first NAS) is getting slower and sloooooower.
It was bought as a way to store our photos etc. and my wife likes to use it for managing photos to create (physical) photo albums annually. For the past couple of years the speed has decreased and response times increased. I back-up the data every few months on a separate HDD which we then use for going through photos as the interface to the DS115j is just painfully slow.
I have thought about the DS224+ as an upgrade as I want something better. Would it be worth going to the DS723+?
Your latest review on the two would suggest that the 723 is the better value for money and I am happy to spend the money but I feel it may be overkill.
On the other hand, what we use the NAS for now may very well be limited by the lack of power of the DS115j.
What are your thoughts?
BR Christian

  Re organise hard drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-09-2024, 03:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi
I have ds920+ with 4 6tb drives
At start I used 3 drives with 4th set up as a hot spare
I then had issues with faulty drives so the spare got used up
I want to get back to situation with 3 drives and a hot spare.
When I try to deactivate drive 4 it asks me for a synology account number.
Can I switch unit off and then pull out 4th drive and then rebuild raid.
I am a beginner
Regards

  ECC Memory for NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-09-2024, 05:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi NASCompares! Love your videos.

I'm researching building my home NAS and I'm trying to build my own. I bought a Jonsbo N3 case, and I am looking for good mini-itx motherboard options which have both 10G-baseT ethernet port, and ECC memory support. And so far I found two options:
Asrock Rack EC266D2I-2T/AQC Mini-ITX
Asrock Rack X570D4I-2T

However, the issue I'm running into is that there are not good options for low power, low cost processors that are easy to find (ebay/amazon US) which are compatible with these boards, and also support ECC ram for a low price. I guess I am still waiting for a CWWK or Topton board to come out which supports both 10Gbe and ECC? Or is ECC ram not all that important really and I should be going for the Non-ECC motherboards which include the CPU and are much cheaper? Halp! Big Grin Thank you, Adam.

  Ram upgrade and SSD upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-08-2024, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Current setup:
- Qnap Nas model: TS-262-4G-US
- Seagate 12TB IronWolf 3.5" Internal NAS Drive (2) for a total of 24 tb
- 1gb router and 1 gb internet up/down

I have 1 problem and a new goal.

Problem: My wife and I are trying to play our backed up media videos using the Andriod QuMagie app but there are always buffer interruptions in the playback. We both have brand new Pixel 9 phones so hardware should not be an issue. Why would we be having issues?

New goal: Use my NAS to store video editing files that I am editing using Davinci Resolve 19. I assume I need some kind of m2 SSD for this (I say m2 because I only have a 2 bay so I have no more room for anything else). I watched your video on most of these being overkill and not getting the full speed out of them so I am wondering which m2 you would recommend?

I want to add some ram and am wondering if you suggest just getting another 4gb stick or going to 8gb x2 for 16. Also, which SO-DIMMs do you recommend that are compatible?

NAS for Plex Transcoding 4k/HD (over net) to 6-10 people
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-08-2024, 08:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Trying to sort through whether a Synology or QNAP is the right move - setting up a new NAS specifically for Plex Media Server to host 200+ DVDs and Blu-Rays. Access will be limited to around 6 people in 3 different places, so transcoding is a must. NAS is located in a fairly infrequented spot so the less operation needed, the better. Keeping budget under $2k for the NAS + drives, but have some flexibility to go higher for more peace of mind.

Leaning Synology or QNAP, though open to others if it works for a first-timer. Thank you in advance!

  Plex NAS recommendations
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-07-2024, 06:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi!

I have a WD MyCloud PR2100 that I have been using as a plex NAS and also with separate partition for Mac Time Machine backups.

Now looking to upgrade to a unit (potentially rack mounted) that can stream 4k content to devices outside of home network without transcoding (and buffering) to play at a lower resolution.

I’ve heard recommendations to run Plex OS and movie info from a SSD and then have the actual movie files from a HDD but haven’t yet figured out how to do that. I think my new upgraded unit would need both SSD and HDD drive slots?

I would like to have 3+ computers back up to the NAS as well if possible. Not sure if they should have dedicated drives for this functionality within the NAS or if partitioning alone is adequate?

Ideally the new unit would have two 10 GbE ports and upgradable RAM - would like to make it “future proof” for 10 years or so if possible.

Let me know if you need more info and otherwise which devices you recommend. Thanks for your help!!!
