Best NAS for movies and general
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-22-2024, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello gentlemen, I’ve stumbled upon your Chanel and website and learned a lot! But, with so many options and little details that I might have missed or don’t understand, I still have to ask and for help. After all the research I’ve been doing lately, it appears that Synology and QNAP are the top brands. The thing is, Synology doesn’t rate the highest with movies and QNAP has had security issues. Then there is Asustor which appears to have bang for your buck. I’ve reviewed Synology DS923+, DS423 QNAP TS464, ts453B, tvs1688, and now Asustor Lockerstor. I am struggling in picking one. But I do kind of like that Asustor. What would you guys recommend for Movie watching, and general back up for the household? I do want the option of streaming while away from home as well.

Hi. Firstly thanks for your informative YouTube videos. I am looking to purchase a QNAP NAS for 4K video editing (2 studio based editors, 1 remote). Can we purchase this through you or do you provide a (paid) consulting service to advise please? Many thanks! Peter

  Replacement for Drobo 5D
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-22-2024, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there,

I have a Drobo 5D with 3 x 4TB WD NAS Red drives. This is connected to a Mac Mini via a TB2 connection which also acts as a Plex server

Looking to migrate to a supported NAS device, given Drobo is defunct. Prefer to keep it directly attached to the Mac (presume TB3 upgrade) and would like the easiest way to migrate.

Having at least 5 bays would be good to allow for additional storage.

I have seen the recent NAS announcements by UGreen with attractive pricing, but I am worried about the quality, given they are new to this market.

Would like some ideas of devices to look out for good prices on.

Thanks.

  Routers/switches

I am going to purchase the QNAP TS-664 with 6 WD Red 22TB to use as my Plex server. I plan to have the drive in my room so it is closer to my computer to add files to it. My modem is in the living room and i was wondering the best router/switch to run from my room to the modem? Also should I use CAT5, 6, or 7 cables?

  Ds918+ 4 Bay
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-20-2024, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good day and thank you for this amazing service

I write to ask what is the max hd capacity I can use in a bay on ds918+

I currently have 3 x 8tb WD Red and 1 x 3tb and the latter I won't to upgrade to a minimum 12tb

I have read on Reddit 16tb will work but on synology unofficial forum they say 12tb

So I thought I would ask an expert

Kindly Simon

  NAS for home
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-20-2024, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a mini pc I'll use as a Plex server, and now I need a storage layer of some sort. So, I decided to go for a NAS. Quicksync is not a must, since I already have that in my mini pc. I also want to store personal files, like photos and videos. I prioritize low power usage and easiness of use at the lowest possible price. 10GBE (or 2.5GBE) is a nice to have, and could be added later. I've been looking at Synology DS923+ and QNAP TS-464. Of the two, Synology seems more suited, due to its software. I'm wondering if I can get something cheaper at the expense of processing power, or other. I don't mind the DIY route, although I'd skip countless hours of configuration, and appreciate what Synology (or QNAP) provide out of the box. Thanks!

DAS for media storage and data backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-19-2024, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello.

I have been researching external thunderbolt RAID enclosures to manage through a "stripped" Macbook pro that is now in a server capacity on our home network. I would like to archive all of my music and photos as well as have a second location for Time Machine backups.

In my reading there are active debates regarding HW RAID and SW RAID. There also seems to be a varied set of opinions when it comes to solid state, or enterprise grade spinning media.

Lastly, noise... I have read that OWC and others are VERY noisy and I do not want that issue to come along for the ride when I pull the proverbial trigger on a storage solution.

At the end of the day, I am in search of a reliable RAID enclosure that offers reliability, value and relative quiet. I don't think I need RAID 5, but defer to your expertise on whether RAID 1 is enough for my application. I would also like to be able to monitor the health of the drives. The MB P is a 2013 13" w/ Intel i7, 500 MB & 16 GB.

  Thecus n2520 or build new
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-19-2024, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a Thecus n2520 that has been sitting in a closet, unused for years. Just pulled it out and factory reset everything. The original OS doesn't appear to be loading fully when trying to access different areas of the UI. What does load is super slow, probably due to the intel atom inside. It appears there is no manufacturer support due to age (which is to be expected at ~10 years old) .
Is it better to scrap it and build/buy new or is there an alternate solution that can be loaded on to it?

Thanks in advance
