SRM and DSM merge |

Hello,
unfortunately I'm not getting any meaningful feedback from Synology support; I think most of the agents don't know what I'm talking about at all. That's why I'm now trying my luck with you.
Synology SRM is based on DSM 5 (from the beginning). The current SRM 1.3.x is also still based on DSM 5 - you can see this in the slightly different certificate management and visually in the taskbar at the top. DSM 5 is now about 10 years old.
My question is: will Synology release an SRM in the near future that is developed on a more modern basis? Or in other words: are they planning to bring (merge) SRM and DSM back to the same level?
Perhaps you could include this in one of the next interviews with Synology :-)
Thank you
Dominik

[TrueNAS Core and LSI 9207-4i4e] Compatible 4/8 bay SAS External Enclosure? |

Hello,
I've got TrueNAS Core running on a repurposed Dell Optiplex 5040 SFF with an LSI 9207-4i4e in it. The 4 internal channels are connected to 4 enterprise SATA SSDs with a breakout cable and work great (so far).
The external connector is an SFF-8088. I'm looking for a 4 or 8 bay hotswap JBOD that I can connect to it. (I know I can't use more than 4 bays without an expander, but in my research so far, there's not a huge price difference between the 4 and 8 bay models I've found, so it's conceivable it might be cheaper to get the 4 bay).
I know the best solution would be to rebuild the whole thing in a case that actually fits it, but my budget is about $300 or less, so I can't really do that right now.
Eventually, I want to move the whole thing into an HL15, but that's going to be at least a year from now.
The JBOD will sit on my desk, about 3 feet away (it's a big desk). I know the drives will make noise, but I'm hoping for something with reasonable fans.
I tried a QNAP DL-400S. TrueNAS sees the drives connected to it, but throws all sorts of SCSI errors when doing anything as demanding as creating a pool.
I've done some research and this is apparently a known issue as the QNAP enclosure can't keep up with the commands issued by the LSI card, and the solution is to either disable NCQ or get a different enclosure, and the card doesn't let you disable NCQ on a per-disk level.
I'm looking at this, which looks like a whitebox DIY solution: pc-pitstop (dot) com (slash) scsat44xt
I've also got 2U free in my rack, and am open to building/buying a reasonably quiet 2U JBOD.
Are there any other alternatives I should be looking at? My current two-bay NAS has a drive that threw a bad blocks error at me on one of the drives and failed a SMART test and then decided it was fine on reboot, so I'd like to expedite this purchase if I can.

Really appreciated your reviews on YouTube, and Naz compares.
I’d be glad to make a donation to help support the time it takes you to offer me some suggestions on the right M.2 E1.S. Let me know what a reasonable amount would be to get your help. If it looks right, I can use PayPal, I couldn’t get my credit card to authorize any charges to KO – FI

Also, I used your click through link for an Amazon purchase for this unit.

Jonsbo N2 compatability with 10 TB WD HGST Ultrastar He10 |

Hi,
I read through your very detailed documentation regarding the Jonsbo N2 and its setup. However, I still have a question that I can't find an answer to.
I purchased 4x 10 TB WD HGST Ultrastar He10, HUH721010ALE60 drives which I first had problems powering on, as they have the Power Disable feature which puts the drives in a loop (3.3V on pin #3 of the SATA). Now my question is if I can you use the PCB backlane to insert the drives, or wont they work then?

Good day
I have a question, I would like to use an old Office PC (buy on ebay) as a NAS server, mainly for Jellyfin. But I'm not sure about the manufacturer and model. Rather Dell or HP or Lenovo. It should have room for 4 3.5 HDD.
Thanks in advance

Hello. I have a UPS PowerWalker, not in the supported list. It shows up for some time.Connected by USB.<<<<<suddenly it disappears. When it is showing it also supports via network to my older TS 419II qnap. Problem is when everything is up and running all perfect, but for any reason suddenly it disappear, both on the TS 464 and of course on hte 419 also. After some reboots it will show up again. both are running latest software from qnap.

NAS for plex |

I currently have a Synology 1819+ (RAID 6) which I use to store my Plex library off of. When watching movies in HEVC the NAS struggles (assuming because it can not do hardware accelerated encoding) and the movie becomes laggy and unwatchable. Network is not the issue as I have 1 gig up and down. It is the NAS CPU that is maxed out at basically 100%. Looking for suggestions to watch any movies via Plex regardless of codec and watch on the fly without lagging. Would it be better to build a computer or go with a pre-built NAS system?
I understand that I may have to switch from Synology and some how get all media off to another unit.

Enclosure for Ex-NAS harddrives |

Hi storage experts
From a Synology NAS I am retiring two IronWolf HDDs (not IronWolf Pro) and I would like to use one or both drives in an enclosure as local USB storage for my Mac. (Ideally I'd use both HDDs a RAID 1 set in that USB enclosure.)
I don't want a NAS going over the network, just plain direkt USB storage. Can you recommend an enclosure for this?
Many thanks,
Walter

Silent TVS-h874-i5 |

Hello!
Silent version of the QNAP NAS TVS-h874-i5. In your review https://nascompares.com/2022/12/16/qnap-tvs-h874-nas-review-ultimate-desktop-nas/ you wrote “Noise during operation when fully equipped”.
Tries to make it better:As a first decision toward this goal, I chose the 8-bay case instead of the 6-bay case, even though I don't plan on using more than 6-bay cases (except in case of failure). The larger case has more air and larger fans and maybe I can replace these fans with quieter ones. QNAP's specs are very poor, so I don't know if they use 4 or 3 pins and PWM or other connectors.
Next approach: Replace the 250W power supply with the 350 power supply or even a Seasonic SS-400H1U 400 Watt, but again I don't know the specs of the PSUs check which fits and has the same connectors.
Do you think modifying these components can be successful and do you have the missing specifications?
