  8 Bay DAS Enclosure?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi Rob,

I'm a fan of your work. I think you're doing a great job. You just cut through all the marketing speakers and deliver the facts. You seem to be in tune with the NAS industry so I have a question for you. I'm currently looking for an 8 Bay USB enclosure with Hardware Raid and USB C (10gbs or more). It's gonna connect to a Windows PC. I have done some searching about on the web but so far the information I get is quite confusing. Please give me some advice.

WD Red with WD Purple in same NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I’m a complete novice but after watching your videos I’m keen to get a NAS for photo/data storage and surveillance. What I’m not sure on is the hard drives to get. My thoughts are to have 2 WD Red with Raid 1 set up for photo/data storage and then 1 WD purple dedicated for surveillance. Is it possible to have 2 different WD (Red and purple) in the same NAS or should it just be one or the other?

Also in terms of surveillance storage, if I wanted to have constant recording at the highest quality for 2 cameras how much TB should I get for 30 days recording.

Thanks for your videos and advice.

  Synology DS220j vs DS220+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi Folks. Currently I have a Synology DS220j for my Plex Media Server, however, recently, I noticed that its lagging while playing videos. I've concluded based on research that it's having trouble transcoding. Is this correct and if so, should I upgrade to the DS220+ or as a future proof solution, upgrade to the DS720+. What are your thoughts on this since video is going in the direction of 4K?

  QNAP Overnight Backups Impossible? ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there, after watching some fantastic NasCompares video content I bought a TVS H1288X (great system)

I am facing an issue with backups. I want to slowly shift my data into Google Drive between 5pm and 5am every day, this is when I can afford to saturate the internet connection with uploading.

With my Synology, I can easily schedule operation times for my sync task - I can't see any such controls on the Qnap? I have about 40tb to get up initially, then about 800gb per month.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Many thanks,

  High temperature for QNAP TS-653D?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi Rob,

A small question, with possibly half an answer.;-)

I recently bought 2x the same QNAP TS-653D

12x WD RED PLUS 4TB
2x QM2-2S10G1TA (caching data, raid 1)
4x Crucial MX500 m.2 500GB
4x KCP426SD8/16

I call them Chip & Dale!

Chip I made the 6 disks raid 5
and at Dale 4 drives raid 5 and 2 raid 0 because I think I need this speed because I use the shared mapping for my standard windows folders to write and read in. These are being synchronized with Chip every night, so far so good :-D

Now I notice that the Intel Celeron J4125 gets pretty hot IDLE: (I have already removed the plastic covers)

QNAP Dale: CPU temperature is 53 ° C / 127 ° F
and System temperature: 43 ° C / 109 ° F

QNAP Chip: CPU temperature is 50 ° C / 122 ° F
and System temperature: 38 ° C / 100 ° F

Besides the fact that the QM2-2S10G1TA card gives off extra heat.
And the difference in temperature is clearly due to the fact that with Dale I have 4 drives in raid 5 and 2 in raid 0, which means that the Intel Celeron J4125 has to work harder than with Chip.

I think these temperatures are quite on the high side, it is still spring with an indoor temperature of 20 degrees, but later in the hot summer the indoor temperature can easily rise to 27/28 degrees.

The two systems stand freely and neatly on a shelf and have enough free air around them. Why QNAP chose this design is really a mystery to me.

Can you give advice on this ...

Thanks a lot in advance, I am a big fan of your website and Youtube channel ...
Keep Up The Good Work !!!
