  ¿The Quietest 8 or 10 TB drive?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Looking for the quietest drive of all.

I will be using it at home, in the living room, next to my working table and where the family eats and watches TV...

I need 8 TB drive... I have seen the Wstern Digital Red...

Where does stand the Synology HAT5300-8T
8TB HDD 3.5" Edición Enterprise NAS 256MB in this chart on this page of yours?

https://nascompares.com/wd-seagate-hgst-toshiba-noise-level-comparison/

I have watched all your videos on this new drive but I´m undecided...

Thanks for your advice.

Many thanks,

Best
Carmelo

  Home NAS ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I'm a total NAS newbie. I am in the middle of scanning precious family photos that I cannot afford to ever lose, tax information, and maybe at some point movies. I liked Drobo but it looks like they're no longer investing in that product. Synology is super expensive so I am looking for something not too cheap but also reliable - I heard Drobo actually checks the health of the harddrives and automatically backs up data to another if it thinks failure is imminent. Also looking for something that works with Plex. Any helpful advice is appreciated.

  Synology?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I currently have a Mac Pro 5,1 that's stuck on an older version of MacOS so I'm thinking about my digital future. My current setup has 8TB of internal storage with just about 4Tb being used. It's an 8 core 2.0 GHz with 42GB of ram. I have two LaCie external 8TB drives that I use for Time Machine backups (I swap them every month and leave one offsite).

In thinking about retiring the desktop I have been researching NAS for a few months now and I think I've settled on a DS420+ with three (3) 4TB IronWolf HDDs, probably running SHR. I intend to use the 8TB drives as backups for the Synology, swapping them out monthly. I have a MacBook Pro that I will transition to as my primary computer. I store lots of photos and I have a very inefficient method of transferring them from my camera or iPhone to my Mac Pro currently. The majority of my storage is photos that I look through on occasion. In the future I hope to do more photo editing and sorting. Since the Mac Pro is older it doesn't import photos through Image Capture as HEIC but as jpg. So I load pictures from my phone to my MacBook Pro to a Dropbox folder that syncs to the Mac Pro and then copy them from there to the folder where I want them stored. I also share my Mac Pro folders so I access files, copy, and move them on the Mac Pro through the MacBook.

So, I have questions/concerns:
1. Why not just continue to use the Mac Pro as a file repository? Although inefficient, it does work...
2. My iTunes library is LARGE so I can't put it on my MacBook. Is there an elegant solution for having files local to the MacBook when I'm not online and able to access the Synology? Maybe there isn't and I just use my phone or iPad for those times.
3. Is it possible to upload single photos from the iPhone to Synology.
4. From watching your videos I don't think SSD cache is of much benefit to me. I don't access the same files over and over. Is adding/maximizing memory a better bang for my buck?
5. How many years before I should plan to upgrade a NAS?
6. Any opinion on just getting a newer Mac and duplicating the system I have now?
7. Are there any things you think I should know before I jump in. I am reluctant. This is new to me and I feel some anxiety about it.
8. Do you think there's another storage solution I should consider?

Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Dear NAS compares
Thank you for your super relevant information about the differences of SMR and CMR

I have additional question
How do I find out which HDD contains Helium instead of Oxygen.

Particularly the 12 TB from WD.
WD120EFAX

I am trying to find the best 12TB option for a QNAP HS-453DX NAS server.

looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards

  Synology DS920+ RAM Upgrade Issue?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

After watching and reading numerous posts here, I purchased a DS920+ for my Plex server. I had gotten about 5 docker containers setup for VPN's, Sonarr, etc. as well as the native app installation for Plex. Since the memory usage was getting fairly high without a high load on the system just yet, I bought a 16GB RAM module that was recommended in one of the channel's articles. After installing the RAM module, my DS920+ no longer boots up properly and the power button just flashes. If the RAM module is removed, things go back to normal. Am I just not able to use a 16GB RAM module?

RAM Module title and specs from Amazon:
Timetec Hynix IC
16GB DDR4 2666MHz PC4-21300
Unbuffered Non-ECC 1.2V CL19
2Rx8 Dual Rank 260 Pin SODIMM

I would really appreciate some tips which NAS should I buy?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am currently using a DS216+II (Intel Celeron N3060 1.6 GHz, 8192MB) remotely mainly for video streaming with dsvideo (w/ max 720p res) and photo and file categorizing (dsphoto/moments and dsfiles).
Now I am looking for NAS (DS/Qnap) as a new device for my Home Use Case with max 1500-2500EUR Budget which
is future proof from HW point of view (buying for the next 4-5 years) with built-in 10GbE port (or possibility extend (from 1 / 2,5 / 5 GbE) at least 6 Bays (or even 8)
will be used by max 2-3 uers (constantly mainly 1)
is a multimedia hub using for at least 1080p HD video streaming (or even 4K with HW transcoding)
is used for data backup and synchronisation
can be used by my wife for her photography business (post production: categorizing, archiving, sharing photos with clients)
might be used for raw (arw) photo editing (using Adobe Lightroom / Photoshop)
might be used to run her business website (using wordpress or similar base)
might be used for virtual machine deployment

Thank you very much for your help!
Best Regards,
Tamas
