DS1520+ move to DS1621+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I want to move from my current DS1520+ to a DS1621+ to get 10Gb interface via expansion card.

Is my 1520 actually a better Plex performer as it is Intel based and not an AMD (aka will I actually be down grading)?

There does not seem to be a current Desktop NAS from Synology that has both Hardware acceleration and 10Gb capability... is there?

Also do you prefer SHR 4+1 with a (COLD or HOT) SPARE over a 4+2 without a spare?

 NAS bying advise?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there,
I 'am in the IT business for 40 years, but not very experienced in the network and NAS area. What I 'am looking for is an inexpensive NAS , no fancy feature, but reliable and capable to provide my core requirements.
1. Backup my 6 PC's data
2. Store hi-res audio files (flac) for replay with PC media player software JRiver via high-end sound card
3. Archive video files (HD only) from my DVR for replay when the internal disk gets full
4. RAID 1
5. Speed is always nice to have, but my network is only 1G with Cat5 cabling

I would be very happy if can recommend some NAS. QNAP sounds great overall, from SYNOLOGY I heard some bad things, but not sure whats true.

Kind regards,
Thorsten

 Synology for MAC?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, i've watched your videos and they have been very helpful! I'm a Mac-based video editor on a 2013 MacPro with Gigabit internet, thunderbolt 2.0 and USB 3.o. I will upgrade to a brand new mac pro with thunderbolt 3 sometime within 2 years. I'm wondering if there would be any direct advantage to using a NAS with gigabit ethernet directly connected to my machine and using it as a simple RAID 5? I don't exactly need any of the IOT features of NAS right now but maybe in the future. I am also kind of far from my internet modem and just use Wifi and not wired ethernet. I'm wondering if I'm crazy to buy a NAS? Would a Synology or other NAS be good for me or should I just buy a "dumb" RAID 5? Any ideas would be helpful

Back-up Synology Nas to Drobo 5N2?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,
I have a Synology DS1520 and it is currently backing up to itself via HyperBackup.
I would like to backup the backups to my Drobo 5N2.
I have ample space on the Drobo.
Everything I read says to use rsync. rsync is not supported by Drobo anymore.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Really enjoy your content.

 QNAP Expanision Card ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi Robbie

I am not a pro IT person like yourself and followed your advice and purchased a TS-251D and have been very happy

I am looking to expand the NAS with some SSD cache and I am confused about the difference between QM2-2P-244A vs QM2-2P-344 cards except that the 344 is slightly more expensive.. :-)

I just want to expand NAS with 1 or 2 SSD's and not bothered about 10GBs RJ45 and confused about the difference between the 244 and 344

Appreciate your feedback if you get chance?

Thanks
Charles
