Network/Storage Upgrade? |

Hi,
Currently we have a Ds1618+ with 20TB working around the clock on our office. We have 4 workstations + 10 render nodes constantly accessing files over the network, some times even the same files at the same time (specially the render nodes). We have hit a big bottleneck where the NAS can't handle all of this in terms of Network, CPU and RAM.
We had it connected through a 10GBe connection but was quickly saturated and led to tons of connection losses, which meant job failures for the Nodes. That was also probably happening because there were some 10GBe systems at the same time as 1GBe. Once we swapped for a 5 Link aggregation (4 x 1GBe and 1 x 10GBe limited to 1GBe) there wasn't any more saturation problems, just an overall decrease of speed for everyone.
We need to invest in a new solution ASAP as this makes us waste precious time.
Since we've been on Synology for a while I would prefer to stay, but I'm open to other providers.
Right now we were thinking on a NAS with a PCI expansion Slot to put a 40GBe NIC, to connect to a 40GBe switch. Then all the Workstations and Render Nodes would connect to it through 10GBe connections.
Hope you can help us out
Regards

Hello,
I need some advice for purchasing a NAS system.
I access some information in the cloud on the street (DNS) and I usually access DLNA to movies (with subtitles) and photos on SmartTV, I do some backups.
What is the real advantage for the 2 bays?
What are the best/price HDD?
Thanks in advance.
Greetings,
Luís Ribeiro

Ts-453d? |

The website for Qnap shows that I can use the ts-453d with 8 cameras on a home surveillance system. Qnap says it needs 8gb ram to do so. But the 4gb specs say it will transfer 160 GB per sec, and the nas surveillance calculator shows I will need something like 48gb per sec. Can I do 8 cameras with 4gb model (I plan on upgrading to more than 8 at a later date)? Thanks you for any help, and thanks for the great videos you have already made. Helped me a ton on deciding which nas to go with.

Hi, great YouTube videos!!
Which NAS? - Been looking at the Synology DS218, basically it will be mainly used for music files and pictures, maybe the odd 4K video clips, to my AVR / TV. i.e. multi media.
I like the feature of copying straight from a USB for ease.
I want something that will not grind to a hault because of low RAM .
Also it will be connected to a SkyQ Router not sure if that could be problematic?
Thanks in advance Rach.

QNAP TS431P SSD or HDD? |

I have a LOT of genealogy photos and videos (~10TB) on my desktop plus my wife and kid's laptops.
I got a free TS-431P from work and bought 4*6TB WD Reds to put in it, but I now see how it MIGHT be faster with an SSD in the first slot.
I mainly want to use this NAS for backup of all of the workstations. My understanding is that I am maxed out at 16TB by the CPU???
I have an external 16TB USB drive for backup of the NAS. I was thinking that I should only use 3 of the HDD and an SSD for speedup?
What is your recommendation?
I am also having an issue figuring out how to schedule the sync with the external USB, could you point me to one of your videos? I watched the 8 part one, but maybe I missed it? THANKS for all of your hard work.

I need some professional advice which I would rather pay for.
Our back story is…
Having become frustrated with the data mess of 3 PCs, 3 laptops, and numerous devices I purchased a Synology DS420+ having watched many of your (and other) videos. We have a great Ubiquity home network to keep us connected wired and wirelessly, but with us now mostly home working and homeschooling and using more in-house media for entertainment we needed a central data solution.
Being dyslexic I tend to look to audio/visual instruction. With so much information and opinions on the likes of youtube I have become completely overwhelmed with snippets of advice over the past 4 days of what I want to achieve, but still no definitive answer to how to do it.
Do you offer a paid advice service or a remote set-up option? And what is your availability as I keen to get this up and running asap.

Looking to upgrade as the existing setup is busting at the seams. (85% utilization) currently using an 8, and a 4 in a non-raid configuration. thinking of a 4 bay with 4, 8 tb drives raid 5?
