  1-Bay Synology NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I use Apple Devices - 2017 MacBook, iPhone 7, iPad, and Apple TV & Samsung TV. I also use iCloud to store my data and sync. across devices.
I want to buy a NAS to provide an additional backup for the data in iCloud, plus storage of photos currently only on a SSD (scanned from prints plus images from a digital camera) and approx 50 DVDs.
I'm not interested in streaming videos to any devices other than the Apple TV so maybe transcoding is not a problem for me.
I've been advised that Synology makes good products but I've had conflicting reports of whether Plex will run on a DS118; Synology says it won't but another company (a reseller) says it will.
I'm trying not to go to the expense of a 2-bay NAS (such as the DS218) as this almost triples the price when 2 by Ironwolf HDDs are factored in.
I understand that a 1-bay NAS doesn't have RAID1 redundancy but, as I still have iCloud and the SSD I don't think I need a 2-bay model.
If Plex won't run on a DS118, are the Synology Apps ( Video Station and Media Server) as good as Plex?

  Backup for Synology?

I like the synology but I need backup. Should I use usb external and make it easy, or buy a suitable cage, and build a SAN?

Re: interested in getting a NAS drive with thunderbolt?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, love your YouTube videos they are very helpful.

I’ve recently started my own business
https://www.goldenmomentmedia.com/

Not going to great at the moment sadly (haha/slowing dying on the inside) as no events have been happening thanks to COVID.

So I am media creator making professional films/videos for people and businesses.

I’ve been thinking of a large NAS drive to store my files and work on my video projects from.

Will be handling a lot of 4K files and in high frame rates too 4K 120p

One of the reasons I was thinking a NAS is better, is So I can share finished video with people and get them to download it from my personal cloud rather then having to pay a file sharing site like weTransfer for their large file transfer service.

How does this file sharing work? Can I just select a file right click and generate a link to that file to share with someone via an email message similar to google drive?

I would highly appreciate if you could suggest to me some relevant devices for my needs also please tell me what internal hard drives are best to get too for the NAS.

I have no idea on the best raid setup to use and why?

Which NAS has the best phone apps and Mac software?
I use Mac computers.

If you would like to know anything else I would love to speak with you either zoom or FaceTime me. My number is on my website if you need to call me.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Ali

  QNAP TS-453D Upgrades?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I just purchased a TS-453D from Newegg for $429 along with 4x 4TB WD Red Hard Drives. I'd like to know if I can/should upgrade the memory and whether I should add any other extras (M.2 SSDs, PCIe add ons, etc). I won't say money is no object, but I have some room to make some upgrades. Finally, I was thinking RAID 5; is this a good choice for this use?

FYI, I have a 24port unmanaged switch running all the ethernet drops I put in early in 2020. I have additional room on the switch to allow extra connections to the NAS (which will probably sit on a shelf right next to the switch).

  Budget/basic NAS for file sharing/backups?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi i am considering purchase of QNAP TS-230 with ST4000VN008.
Estimated usage - 1) stockpile for our family , 2) first tier backup from 2 laptops.
Question 1: Will it work if I initially purchase just the NAS with one HDD of 4Tb - start using it and during the year add another 4Tb to create RAID 1 ?
Question 2: I want to use a usb HDD to attach to the NAS as 2 tier backup - is it any good of a strategy? Could You advise on particular hardware?

P.S. Thanx 4 those reviews on Youtube - these are quite good for a newbie.

  UPS for QNAP TS-453D-4G?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello. Thanks for many good articles helping me to choose my first nas: QNAP TS-453D-4G
I realized that I should use a UPS in case of power cut.
Which one should I go for?
It only has to have battery to give the nas time to shutdown. The shutdown feature should also be supported.
Thanks

  New Nas ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,

Would like to advise on what to buy. I currently have a very old DS 1010+ with 2x 4Tb drives 2x3tb drives and an old 2tb drive. I have had this for the last 5 years now and done well for me.

I'm a photographer and store images and videos on the drive. I back up my computer to the NAS

I back up 3 iphone pictures to the NAS,

Thats pretty much all I use it for

I noticed recently one of the fans stopped and restarted therefore I'm thinking its got an issue somewhere and think I need to upgrade before it fails.

I was thinking the DS1520+ but its over my budget and do I really need it. Or is it worth considering an older NAS.

I look forward to hearing from you.
