QNAP QNA-T310G1S + transceiver? |

Hi.
I've got a MacBook Pro and I'd like to be able to connect to 10G networks (at work, installations and also at home).
I'd like to be able to connect to both fiber and cooper networks. that's why I'm thinking in an adapter like the QNA-T310G1S (SFP+) and the possibility to buy an ethernet RJ45 transceiver.
But I'm lost with transceivers compatibilities (Juniper, Mellanox, Ubiquity, HP) , and I'm not sure if this will work and if I'll have compatibility issues.
I write to you because I follow you on youtube and I've seen that you have posted several videos about SFP+ networks and adapters, and I thought that maybe you could help me.
Will it work? Any transceiver model suggested? Any advice?
Thanks in advanced

Dear nas compares team,
I amcurrently looking to expand caoacity on my trusted QNAP TS-869 Pro as my SG Enterprise Capacity 3 TB drives started to fail one by one and their load noise was driving me mad. Partly because the NAS sits under my telly in the living room and is well within hearing distance. The flat is rather small, so another location isn't possible. I changed to first two HDD failures to WD Red 10 TB and am actually quite happy with those. Being a data hoarder I want to go for top capacity and wanted to ask of you have already made noise level comparisons of 14 and 16TB drives. I am looking for the quietest drive. Should they be considerably louder, I would keep on changing failing drives to the WD Red 10 TB HDDs.
Thanks in advance,
Chris
P.S.: I love you youtube channel. Top notch very helpful videos.

NAS advice? |

Hello,
I am searching for my first NAS solution. We are a family of four (2 adults, 2 young children) and are all Apple users. Few phones, Pads, three Mac computers. My expectation from from a NAS unit is a Media Center (probably Plexi) so I can stream from one location to several devices, including my TV (not a smart TV, no wifi) through HDMI. Second of all I am looking for a remote access (not from home) to files and last but not least a backup solution (Time Machine). I would also like to have folder I can share with third parties (possibly password protected), so I can upload work related files and they can access it from their homes. I got my eyes set for a QNAP TS-253B. I intend to install 2x 4TB drives - one main and one backup/mirror (probably WD Red NAS HDD 4TB). Is this a valid solution for my demands? Or is maybe TS-251+ enough (although is a bit older then the previously mentioned 253B)? What would be your suggestion?
Thank you in advance!
All the best,
Primoz

DS218+ or DS220+? |

Hi,
first of all, thank you very much for your work. Your information helped me a lot!
I have a DS212j where I store only movies that I watch on my TV through DLNA.
My NAS is getting older and I wanted to change it with the DS218+. I saw on your website the DS220+. Should I wait?
Thank you in advance for your opinion!

Hello
I'm following the pre build NAS world for a while now and I'm a bit stunned how pricey they are compared to what's available in terms of hardware and software today.
So for a while now a NAS is not just used for storage via a network nor is it advertised as such. It's becoming more of an all round type off "server"with a lower power consumption compared to a traditional similar type off server. This is also how i want to use one as a flexible home server. The last couple of years the hardware is wildly available to do that for a lower price. But i don't see it being offered bye any of the NAS manufacturers. There is also a wide range of free open source OS software available and some of them in my opinion are superior to the OS they provide.
I would need to buy one off their top tear enterprise devices to come remotely close to something i want in terms of power and probably not use half of the available bays etc ?
So how can you justify the cost of a that and in general any pre build NAS ?
For example in the pc world OEM'S big and small in general provide attractive and sometimes lower priced devices compared to a similar DIY solution. Which makes sense because they can buy and produce in bulk.
How would you not build something yourself invest a little time in building it and doing research and have something more powerful more power efficient for a fraction of the price?

Can extra RAM or eSATA SSD improve Plex transcoding on Synology ds218+? |

I recently got a synology ds218+ which will mainly be used as a plex server with some minor backup functionalities. I want to use plex to share it with family members who live far away. From what i have read i need to get the premium version of plex to enable hardware transcoding. This is where the advice I find online gets confusing.
I've read about people getting an extra SSD to enable transcoding there (using the USB or the eSATA port?) and some others about using RAM to transcode? Is a ram upgrade even necessary?
Hopefuly you can give me some clarity between all this contradictory advise.
Thanks in advance for your time,
