  Remote access via VPN
Posted by: SJG - 09-19-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Networks - Replies (2)

I've recently set up my QNAP NAS but have not enabled the cloud access, due to the vulnerabilities I have read about/ seen YouTube vids on.
I see that people suggest if you *must* access remotely then a VPN is the way to go. My problem is that neither my modem (Virgin Superhub 3, modem mode) nor my mesh router (BT Wholehome) allow VPNs to be installed. Is there a neat solution for this or am I looking at buying new hardware?
I did see a product called the InvizBox2 - does anyone have any experience with it, or know how well it works? Where in my set up would such a thing go? Between modem and router, or between router and QNAP?

  Kodi + QNAP QVPN
Posted by: SJG - 09-17-2023, 06:03 PM - Forum: Home Multimedia - Replies (2)

Hi, just a quick question.

I've recently set up Kodi on my TS-453d and it is working well.
I also have QVPN on the NAS, running through my Expressvpn account, also appears to be working fine.
I've made the assumption that my data usage for Kodi will be masked from my ISP by my QVPN, and I will not need to do anything within Kodi itself. Is my assumption correct?

  Begging networking
Posted by: Kennz - 09-17-2023, 09:10 AM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (1)

Hi, I am in the market for a Nas that is primarily for Hi res audio storage and delivery to a Dac. My question is which machine would best do this, software etc and more importantly how would it be connected. I understand IT up to a point and know AV very well so I am trying to marry them.
The plan is Nas to router not switch (right?) then the tricky part switch to Dac then analogue out to receiver. Dac’s usually don’t have Ethernet inputs. How do I get audio data from the network into a Dac is the question. Cheers.

Exclamation failed playback of Top Gun Maverick 2022 IMAX H264 file in your videos
Posted by: optimus_prime - 09-13-2023, 05:40 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

In your Plex 4k videos, this file has failed playback on most NAS devices up to the point that it seems NAS can't play video files near 80 Mb/s bitrate. But after reading through a few people's posts on Reddit they claim that a direct play of such heavy files is possible with any home-based NAS like DS 920+ and TS 464.
I want to make a purchase decision based on your videos but it seems that there is some discrepancy regarding the top gun file which was not even played by QNAP TVS-h874 in one of your videos.
My use case required me to play heavy Blu-ray discs that I have ripped ranging between 40-100 Mb/s(HEVC). After watching your videos it made an impression that these files can't be played by any budget home NAS and will require a more expensive NAS.
I just wanted confirmation that this is actually true and the file is somehow not corrupted.
Also if it's possible to omit/replace that file with some other equivalent bit rate files would be helpful in your future videos.

  What to buy???
Posted by: HeRo - 09-13-2023, 05:44 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

So I own a Qnap NAS for years now. Only using it for file storage. Because I find the UI, setup and configuration to difficult. I want to be able to do more. So I’m looking at Synology. Seems like their approach would be what I’m looking for. But looking at test and models it seems I need to select a NAS for certain purpose. I’ve been looking at a 4-6 bay tower unit. And it seems that either it is focussed on home use with quad core and integrated graphic CPU, or it is more business oriented with dual core and more expansion capabilities in regards to storage and network. I find it really difficult to choose. How to decide? Who’s to say what I would need/want in about a few years? Isn’t their a machine that can do it all?

  Synology DS720+ with DX517 Question
Posted by: Arndrell - 09-10-2023, 12:23 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (2)

Good Afternoon,

My current setup is Synology a DS720+ (1GB RAM upgrade, 2x 16tb Ironwolf Pro -SHR)  mainly for Plex/Infuse MKV files played over network..
I very quickly ran out of space, not realising how much my movie collection would take up (yeah, I know, should have just bought a 920+) and after much deliberation I have taken the plunge and ordered the DX 517, loading it up with 2x Irowolf Pro 2tb (spares from when I first got the DS720+) currently and setting it up as Volume 2..

What I want to do is move the smaller drives from the the DX 517 to the DS 720+, using these for general storage and the larger drives (with the movie data on) to the DX 517, in a month or so I will buy another 2x 16tb drives for the DX 517 and continue ripping the remaining movie collection..

TLDR
Question: Can I just physically move the drives from DX720+ to DX517 to without causing an issue?

Thank you in advance

Any way to get DSM 7.2 to use usb ethernet upgrade for internet connection?
Posted by: junkin - 09-09-2023, 05:02 AM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (1)

Hi, all!

Context:
I just followed the great guide youtube.com/watch?v=iMJ-Lhyq16s ("Synology 2.5GbE / 5GbE USB Adapter Setup Guide - DSM 7 Version") and added a 2.5g ethernet usb adapter to my aging Synology DS 218+ (running DSM 7.2). The Control Panel > Network > Network Interface gui shows both the original 1000Mbps and the new 2500Mbps LAN nics are connected and set to different static ips, with the same subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server.  The router/modem from the ISP, and both the 1Gbps and 2.5Gbpsethernet cables from the nas are running directly into a 2.5g unmanaged switch with cat 7 cables. With this setup I can access my docker services ports easily on either new or old nic ip.

Main Question:

One reason I decided to do the upgrade is because my new ISP has me on a promotional package with 1500Mbps download, and I thought I might as well try to max that out. But with when I run an interent speed test (with both nas ethernet ports still connected), I still get a result of ~1000Gbps, rather than ~1500. If I boot with both connected and then disconnect the 1Gbps ethernet, I can still access the docker service ports on the new ip, but don't seem to get any internet connection. Is there something else I need to do (if it's actually possible) to get the nas to use the new 2.5g ethernet for connecting to the internet rather than the old ~1000Gbps connection? I've found Control Panel > Network > Network Interface > Manage > Service Order, but as far as I can tell, changing the order doesn't change anything.

Secondary Question:
If there's a way to solve the main question, is there any way to use the original 1000Gbps ethernet connection as a backup in case the 2500Gbps usb connection fails?

Thank you so much for any help! I'm quite out of my depth on networking at this point haha Blush

Enterprise versus Consumer Hardware for NAS Build
Posted by: ajama13 - 09-07-2023, 03:19 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I am a recent subscriber, but honestly, I do know how I didn't discover NAS Compares earlier. In terms of the reliability of UnRaid, is there a significant difference in using consumer vs. server-grade hardware? I ask as being from the UK, the energy prices are bonkers, so having an R210 II running 24/7 with all the heat it generates, I'm at my wits end and am currently looking for a replacement.

My main concern is the motherboard platform and the lack of ECC memory. In your experience, is it worth the risk for a home user?

Frustrations after new purchase - Asustor
Posted by: jimmysc95667 - 09-04-2023, 08:45 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hello,
I just posted below to your channel ...
I am considering returning this device.  Should I be looking at Synology or QNAP?  I am willing to increase the budget to get simplicity and reliability.  Thanks much in advance.

NASCompares ... really appreciate the videos and the honest open-source information. I was looking to migrate from older Western Digital NAS devices for better security and improved network speed. My use case is accessing files for personal and work from home productivity using multiple devices. I ended up going with an Asustor AS6704T and WHAT A NIGHTMARE. The attractions were the dual 2.5G ethernet ports and the SSD caching. Neither really works reliably, although in fairness a network bottleneck, despite completed network upgrades, could be purely network related and not in the NAS. The GUI is unclear and gives contradictory information in different locations. Even the physical build quality is lacking. A rear screw on the case stripped, after one removal and one reinstall, while opening it to install the nvme SSD's. ( Why is there not simply a door ? ) Since my new hard drives were inside, I had to get inventive and ultimately aggressive to get it open ... not nice in a new device. I avoided Synology due to its inflexibility regarding drive brands ... and am now wondering if that was a bad idea. I am still troubleshooting and making adjustments, I will update here if things improve in case anyone is looking at this. One specific: If you have an ASUSTOR ... note the table in the online manual relating to nvme SSD capacity, and the RAM required. It allowed me to install more SSD capacity than the RAM would allow and it seems this has caused problems.
