Currently have a QNAP TS-543 pro, works well does want I have wanted, Jellyfin, and file storage.
Things have changed I now run a company and need more would really like 1 or remote windows 10 or 11 desktops (so Virtual machines)
The 543 pro even on win 7 and office 2019 has too much lag.
Budget is £600 - £700
The another £800 to £1000 for 48 TB of drives
Any ideas?

Drive selection for a DIY project |

I'm building my first NAS. I've decided on the main components, but not on the drives that I'm going to use, and i'd like some advice on that.
I'm building with the Jonsbo N2 case.
16GB 3200mhz RAM
Celeron J6413 processor
128GB M2 SSD for the OS
I want to use it as a backup storage (leaning towards TrueNAS scale), media server (Jellyfin probably, Plex if Jellyfin is too complicated), Bittorent RSS downloader, Pihole if possible (haven't looked into that), and most importantly when it comes to drive selection: I want to attach 3 wireless NVR cameras with ZoneMinder.
If possible, I want zoneminder to analyse and just save footage on the NAS when movement is detected in specified zones. However, i have no clue if the footage needs to be written to the NAS first to be able to analyse it as that would stress the drives a lot more.
I want to add 5 drives to my NAS, and I'm a bit in doubt between classic NAS drives like the Ironwolf or WD Red, or surveillance drives like the WD purple. What would you all recommend going for?

How to "retire" a Synology volume for future use |

Hi All,
I didn't see this covered in the forum and was getting a lot of different info from Google so I figured I'd reach out here.
Background: I've got a Synology 1621+ that I use to manage media for a small production company. I have media synced to Backblaze for offsite storage and the 6 drives are in a raid 10 config for additional protection.
The plan: I intend to get 6 completely new drives (larger capacity than the current drives) and make a new volume to start from scratch. I would take the current volume made up of the 6 drives, remove them entirely, and store them safely somehow. This way, if I needed something from that original volume, I could just plug in all the drives and I'd have the original media. That means I don't need to pay to restore anything from Backblaze. I've read up on backing up and restoring the Synology configuration and intend to do that so I'm not starting from scratch with the Synology unit
The question/s: - Is there a proper way to "retire" a volume before removing them?
- If I did need to restore something from the original volume, popping them all back in would allow instant access as if I never replaced them correct? No restore/repair process?
- Should I restore the configuration settings or am I better off starting from scratch?
- Is there a better option I'm not thinking of that doesn't involve an expansion unit?
I know this is a bad idea for the original drives just sitting around but this is a stopgap for the next year of production since we will inevitably move everything to a cloud service next winter anyway. I'm just trying to avoid an expansion bay.
Thanks all,
-Bob-

DS423+ or 923+ |

Dear NASMasters,
I am about to buy a new NAS replacing my old DS213j. The old one was never a powerhouse, with 2x3TB WD RED it lasted for almost 10 years. And I hated it because it was so slow, furthermore in the last few years it always freezed when a big package was downloaded via DownloadCenter. Sometimes it restarts itself... don't say a word...
I decided to upgrade. I use it as photo storering place, a download (seed) server, and a video and music center for my library. I never used any other media center software, once I tried Plex, but it never was configured well.
My tool for playing music and video are up-to-date, so I don't have to convert usually my files. As a fileserver I connect to my NAS with my TV, and the TV (or my Dune player) plays HDR or Dolby Vision movies on its own, my HiFi plays what I need.
I am also thinking on adding some IP cameras to my home, so that is why I thought I have to go 4-bay solutions. As I read many articles and saw many videos, I think DS423+ is my choice. But as I never used Plex or never needed to convert videos to stream, I become uncertain about DS923+. I just need a file to be pushed to the network, my other devices will do the rest, if a new video format comes in, it is easier to buy a new player. DS923+ gives more adventages in network and file-handling side (more futureproof) than DS423+ with a 4-year old processor, but video abilities.
Anyway my idea is to put my old 3TB drives to a new system, and when it is ready add a new drive to the pack, and I will have the possibility to later add/replace some more HDDs.
So what I need a NAS for? Downloading and storing films, music, sharing them on my network, for photo storage and maybe for ipcameras.
But the question is which DS to choose for my usage.
Thanks in advance.

? QNAP QuTS hero |

Thinking about upgrading my QNAP device to another that can support QuTS hero.
Before I do, I want to confirm a few things.
1. If I wanted to migrate from QTS to QuTS Hero, I would need to have a storage pool equal to or larger than my current used space. Is this correct? From my understanding, as it is FS change you can't do a live migration and keep the data.
2. In the past I understood you couldn't add individual disks to a storage pool in QuTS hero, instead you would need to make another R5/R6 etc and add that new raid to the existing. Watching a video of yours it sounds like an update occurred that does allow you to add individual disks to QuTS hero. In other words, adding additional individual disks to an existing R6 or ZFS volume. Is this correct?

HELP Plex Metadata Migration to Synology DS423+ |

Hi All,
First off, I'm relatively new to NAS and Docker (Container Manager in my case). I'm trying to migrate my Plex install from a Windows 10 Pro machine to my Synology DS423+ with Container Manager.
I've been using the following guides to aid me along the way
How To Install Plex On A Synology DS223 Or DS423 With Container Manager / Docker
Plex Pro Week ‘23: The Great Docker Migration on youtube (came out this week)
Both are great and extremely helpful but the NAS Compares does not deal with migration, and the Plex Pro video is about Unraid. So many other guides are now outdated or not explicitly my situation.
After much trial and error I've been able to install plex in Container Manager successfully but no migration. None of the guides really cover how to copy my metadata etc to the install. I've seen some guides that tell you to do the migration with the install, while the Great Docker Migration video above, has the migration occur after install. I'm so confused. The Plex video makes it seem incredibly easy for unraid but I'm not sure if that works for Synology and Container Manager, or what the file paths should be to do so. I've zipped up my plex server directory on my source machine, and it's 40 gb so it's a beast to copy/unzip etc each time.
Please, any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.

Hi All,
I have had my Synology DS920+ for about two years already.
I noticed lately that it is sometimes running on a high 60s to low 70s in temperatures.
I have my fans on full powered since I started using it.
Should I be concered about changing my fans or opening it up to do a more thorough cleaning?
I don't know how to reduce the temperature.
Thank you.

HDD Dock or NAS Expansion Unit |

Hi,
I'm currently using the Asustor AS5202T, on your recommendation, with 2 unequal capacity HDD with no RAID, and a third HDD connected to one of the USB port behind via an external HDD enclosure. Everything works fine at the moment, though I had a scare when I removed one of the HDD from the bays and then placed it back in and the NAS couldn't read any of the original data. One of Asustor's engineer helped me out with that issue, a long complicated process that I didn't understand technically, but it worked nevertheless and he was really helpful, working over a long weekend holiday with me on it.
Anyway, now I've decided to do some form of backup or RAID by "expanding" the number of bays I have. The question I have is, should I get another NAS, use the Asustor AS6004U expansion unit, or get an external 4-bay HDD docking station and use the savings instead on the new HDDs I'll need?
I've already got my eyes on 2 units of Seagate's EXOS 16TB drives. By the way, the AS5202T is the first time I've ever used a NAS. It was just to serve as a data server for my home network so multiple computers can access the data.
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

Does anyone have any experience with this system for secure remote access to your local network? Any thoughts or advice?
"Networkchuck" on YouTube has a fairly well explained video outlining it called "the END of VPNs?!" and it seems fairly interesting.
