Replacing the DS220+ with a New DS923+to a new DS923+. |

I want to upgrade from a DS220+ (6Gig Ram), (2 Seagate Exos X18 TB drives), set up as SHR, BRTFS. System original format created two 16.4 TB drives, one volume of total 16.4 TB space. This is only used for Video Station (DVD, BlueRay) mpg movie files (5060) server in home use.
I now need more disk space. I want to purchase a DS923+, add 32Gb RAM, two 1TB Flash Drives and 2 new additional Seagate Exos X18 TB drives. Remove the existing 2 Eoxs X 18TB (Video Station movies) and add them to the new DS923+, with a total of 4 Seagate Exos X18 TB) drives. That should create a new total volume of (32.7 TB) SHR 2, according to Synology website calculator.
Can I just install the 2 existing (DS220+) Seagate drives and then add two additional, new (Dell Exos X18 18TB SATA), basically same type of drives?
I DON'T want to loose any of the VS Station file data associated with the movies. Looks like Synology states I would loose the movie file data, (META) and have to recreate it.

Move back to Synology? |

I used Synology's in the past, and I really liked the software. On the hardware side I always found Synology's a bit underwhelming. So I moved to unRAID in a rackmount. My findings so far rackmount stuff is cool, but it is noisy, produces a lot of heat, and is more expensive. Also what I found out Synology's software is really good. Now I'm considering to move back to Synology DS plus series. I already testing a mini pc which hosts Proxmox a hypervisor. So also desktop hardware. Has anyone information when the DS2424+ will be released? My guess is in the first or second quarter of 2024 seen the release cycle. What is your guess?

Hi,
I'm looking for a 4bay NAS, I just can't make a solid choice. I'm a Plex User, but Plex Media Server is installed on mine MacPro / future iMac M3. So no transcoding is needed on the NAS.
I want to keep mine personal data (Time Machine backup), movies, TV shows and music files on the NAS. And stream the files to the client side, I als have a Dune media player.
Safety and durability is for me key, I have some knowledge about configuration a QNAP, I now have a very old 639, which still works but I never use anymore (to slow)
Would in mine user case the 923+ a better option then the 464?
thks in advance for your advice and many thanks for the splendid YT content!
best regards,
Pieter

Synology NAS 224+ and Samsung SSDs |

Hello, I'm thinking to buy Synology NAS DS224+.
Initially, I was thinking about buying 2 hard drives, but recently I've been considering buying two Samsung MZ-77Q8T0BW 870 QVO SSD instead.
I don't plan to overwrite constantly data, but I'll use the NAS as a home drive of mainly multimedia files.
I'd like to know if DS224+ is completely compatibile with MZ-77Q8T0BW 870 QVO (it's not mentioned on Synology official website) and if, in general, this kind of SSD is ok to buy for NAS or if it gives any kind of problems.

Looking to back up 16TB off a server. Want it to be mirrored onto second drive while backing up. So looking at 40-44TB of hard drive space to be safe. Is Synology DiskStation DS224+ 2-Bay and 2 Seagate 20TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD. Is this sufficient? If not, what would you recommend?

SSD Cache Update |

Storage Manager is showing a healthy SSD Cache but "Not the latest version". The Info button gives more information: "This SSD Casche is created in a previous version. You can remove it and recreate a new one for better future support and performance."
I created the SSD before updating to DSM7.2, hence the message.
My question is, should I remove and recreate the cache? It seems strange that this was not handled in the OS update but I will do it if it is worth it. Have you made a video on the steps needed to do this, as I expect that I am not the only one with an SSD cache created before DSM 7.2

TERRAMASTER F4-423 two M2 slots |

Hi, I enjoy the videos that you are putting out. I am new to NAS. I bought the TERRAMASTER F4-423 on Amazon prime day with WD Red 16TB drives. I bought this memory to add
Crucial RAM 32GB Kit (2x16GB) DDR4 3200MHz
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08C4X9VR5
What are the best M2 drives do you recommend?
Should I fill both M2 slots?
Should the M2 drive have heatsinks on them?
I asked TerraMaster but they said to look at the compatibility list, but that list is very old and the models that say to buy are not even around anymore
Thanks
Robert

Your videos are very entertaining (you hate seagulls) and knowledgable. I’ve ordered a Synology DS 923+ from Amazon. I’ve mentioned in an earlier post that I tried using your link before buying, but the webpage was jumping and flickering, so I couldn’t use it. If I decide to fill the NVME slots., which Ssd’s can I use. I’ve looked at the Samsung 970 Evo, 970 plus, 980, would these M2’s work? Can you suggest any others.
I know that I can only use them for caching if they are not Synology.

Video Files Name Structure for NAS/PLEX |

I live by the first rule of computers...Garbage In, Garbage Out. I'm just setting up my DS-1522+ NAS with 5 x 10 TB. 95% of my data are Video .mp4 or Photo .jpg files.
I'm currently revising the file name structure for folders and files. Example :
African Queen (1951){imdb-tt0043265}
You have spent a great deal of time on PLEX. There are other creators doing some video time on file structure, but you folks are the PLEX subject matter experts (although the others don't talk as fast). Ever consider doing a video on all our Garbage In? NAS Volumes, Drives, Folders, so that PLEX can read and process order and metadata for our collections. Not just movies but TV as well. Filebot.exe is an example but maybe you have more. Jellyfin and Emby would also be of interest to your audience. Thanks alot, you are top subscription in my list..Others I can watch one or twice, but I have to loop yours for a few days to absorb all the data you impart in just one video!
