how to logout of NAS folders on from File Explorer
Posted by: greengoat - 12-10-2023, 04:04 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,  I am very new to using a NAS.  I would like to know how to logout of my NAS from my Windows File Explorer?  I am concerned after I access my files that someone can come right behind me and go in my folders from my desktop or if someone gets into my computer.  There is no way to logout of the NAS. (at least I do not know how)  I do not know if there is something in the control panel that I can check off or what.  I used to could just shut my computer down and when I started the computer back up; I would have to login to the NAS to access the folders.  Now if I shut the computer down I do not have to log in.  I can go right to Network,  click on my NAS name,  and there are my folders.  This is not safe.  Can someone help me find a better  and secure way to use my NAS.  I want to be able to get to my folders from my desktop and then log in and out of my NAS whenever I want to get access to my folders or even add items into my folders.  I am asking because I do not know any other way to go about this.  Can some help me please?

Thank you in advance for your help.

  USB C to ethernet
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-09-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
Are there any adapter available that allow me to connect an SSD (Crucial X9 Pro) to an ethernet network? That is USB-C to Ethernet adapter, but not for connecting PC/Mac to ethernet, but to attach an SSD to the network without buying an expensive NAS box. Just want the SSD be available/visible on the network.
I would like to purchase one as a present for someone who can't afford a NAS box an even if she can would not want to use one. It would be plugged into the back of a router or switch and used as a media to watch movies from it on different TVs around the house.

Thank you kindly

>$1000 budget

I was looking at your Jonsbo $1000. If you were not limited to that budget what are the components you would upgrade and to what?

I was looking at this: https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-ar900i?sscid=c1k7_athtz& - would you pick this over the Intel Core i5-12600K 12th Gen? More cores + less power consumption. Not sure the disadvantages and other components will need to swap out in the build.

New NAS user: Synology vs. QNAP
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-09-2023, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there!
I want to set up a NAS at home. Uses will include storage of family files, photos and misc. documents + Plex server. I'm not much of an IT tinkerer, but am interested in it.
I've watched several of your videos (Thanks!). QNAP seems to have better overall HW, Synology has the SW and UI advantage. Normally, I would go QNAP and brave the SW shortfall, but I'm nervous about any data security issues. I know that QNAP has a history of cyber attacks.

1. In your professional opinion, are there steps that can be taken to effectively mitigate data security concerns of QNAP devices?
2. Has QNAP improved on its cybersecurity at all in 2023 (most of the news about cyberattacks was at the beginning of '23)?
3. If I decide to go Synology, I'd like the iGPU of the intel chips for Plex streaming and therefore am debating between the 423+ and 920+. Am I better off going with the 423+ given that its a newer model and may last longer?

Thanks so much - love your content!

Will

Hello, my name is austin craig. I just had a recent tool theft of 40 thousand dollars happen to me down here on the south shore in nova scotia canada.. i have purchased a camera system that has 4k quality and is hard wired to a battery in my tool trailer. In order to be able to view the cameras remotely i need to have the box wired into a wireless router with a Ethernet cable.. i am wondering what router you would recommend for this.. i want to have a top of the line setup as these new tools i had to buy are my lively hood and this is how i feed my family.. if you have any advice for me it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for you time

Synology NAS MAX HD Sizes.... unofficial
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-08-2023, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Rob,

I hope this finds you well. I have an ioSafe 218 NAS that's got 2 10TB HD running as a SHR RAID. If I wanted to upgrade this what's the largest HD Size, you think I could use? Is a 2X 20TB doable, or can I change the SHR RAID to just a RAID 1 and forget about the SHR redundancy, since it's only a Fireproof safety net and if it went down, I would be able to rebuild it rather easily.

  NAS Recommendations
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-08-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Team,
Hoping to get some advice/recommendations for my first NAS purchase.

My use-case will be mainly storing media (movies, tv shows, music). I'm currently using an assortment of external hard drives to store my data and copy locally whenever I need access to a file.

I would like to be able to access the files via my Macbook, PC and Android TV box via VLC.
A nice to have is also to set up a Jellyfin server for media access.

I've already bought two HDDs in anticipation of setting up a NAS which is the 'WD Red Pro 18TB' so compatibility will be needed.

The first option that I have seen is the Synology DS224+ but after some digging on your website/youtube I saw the Ds720+ as also a potential option, would appreciate your steer on pros/cons and future proofing (as much as possible)

Also open to QNAP if you feel it's a better option for me.

Any recommendation would be appreciated

  First home NAS

Currently 90% Apple (Mac,iPhone, ipads iOS) 10% windows. Heavily rely on photos and integration with iCloud. But mostly want to move away from iCloud/google drive/one-drive/drop box (maxed on almost all free & paying more for iCloud now). Considering 2 vs 4-bay and Synology (223 v 923+) vs QNAP 264 & 464. Don't do streaming/plex, mostly just remote/accessible file storage. And for 3-2-1, considering a two solution purchase for offsite assist? I already picked up 2 8TB SATA drives on blackfriday (seagate). And can i mix/match systems in future? Tx!
