Synology Backup advice |

Hi NasCompares Team,
Thanks for all of the great content provided, I've been following along for a while, even back in the SPAN days.
I have a question I hope you can help with. I've recently replaced a very old QNAP device at a customer site with a Synology DS1522+. The backup strategy is; that the 1522+ backs up using Hyper Backup to another Synology (1520+) located in a different building. The 1520+ then backs up to Backblaze B2 nightly, I'm backing up the backup to the cloud. Thankfully, I've not had to restore anything from BB yet, we're using snapshots for small restores. My question is, instead of backing up the backup files to B2, should I be running a secondary backup job on the 1522+ instead? I think for de-duplication purposes and granular restores, it might make more sense. What do you think?
Thank you again for providing this service.
Best regards,
Danny

Hi guys. Absolutely love your YT channel! You are so knowledgeable and know so much. That's half the problem! I've listened to so many of your videos I've got myself confused.
Wife and I both photographers. Combined we have about 6TB and growing of images needing looking after. Currently on HDD's and externals. Looked at QNAP and Synology 4 Bays with 4x 4TB in Raid 5. Tried QNAP demo software online. Don't like it. Too over complicated. Synology seems to be an easier UI for us.
Sole purpose is to backup images from 2x PCs and 3x Laptops and 3x Smartphones. Maybe a bit of music streaming as well. No video content or web hosting etc.
Like the idea of AI to identify photos - faces and things and places.
DS423 - Face recognition only due to 2GB RAM
DS423+ Better as more RAM - Face and Object
DS923+ - is it worth going the extra for this given our actual needs?
Such a minefield!
Kind regards
Nic (The Baffled)

Hi mate, I’m looking at a 2TB SSD for my PS5. Unfortunately I was away and missed Black Friday, anyway there are currently stilla few cheap options in Australia at the the moment and not much between prices so I was just wondering which one you think I should go for all 3 look good and I’m just an average gamer but still want a good SSD.
My options are
Kingston Renegade fury $219
FireCuda 530 $230
Samsung 990 pro $255
So just wondered if you could give me your opinion.
Cheers Aaron

New to NAS! We run a small family company.
We're looking for a solution to serve as a hybrid for both our private and business business needs:
-backing up family photos and videos, predominantly from mobile phones. (4 users).
-sharing work documents I.e. instead of emailing documents (internally), we want a shared folder and to have different folders set with different permissions/members (I.e. so a manager can have a separate folder for each employee, as well as a group folder). (7 people in our office).
-secure remote access- one of our managers lives abroad (as well as a family member who will be uploading photos). We need a solution that can work well for remote access. Ideally also for employees working from home on certain days.
- migrating work email server- ideally have this as our main IMAP server (7 users, currenly under 10GB)
-crm /phone contacts back up.
From what I read so far, Im leaning to the DS723. Correct?

I am not a tech person. I need a simple NAS to work as my Plex server.
My collection of movies has all been ripped from dvd's and blu rays I own. I have ripped them all in a program called MakeMKV - and left them in a MKV format. The collection right now is about 12TB. My house has 3 tv's with ROKU devices that we stream to, but never more the 2 at a time. Never us plex while traveling, and I don't share my plex with friends or family at this time. I have zero idea if there is transcoding going on or not. My last server was an old 4th gen I5 tower that just died.
The second half of this is I want to use the NAS to back up the families Iphones and Ipads. There is 5 of us. So, I want one that has a good Iphone app thats easy for the wife and kids to use (and me).
I can spend a few bucks if I have to but prefer to keep it more on the budget side. I was looking at DS723+ or maybe AS5402T ? TS-264? Something else? Which would better serve me? Thank you.

Synology DS420J HDD compatibility |

Hello
I currently use a Synology DS420J NAS with 4 Ironwolf Pro 6TB HDDs (in SHR1 configuration).
I am planning on replacing 2 of the HDDs with Exos X16 14 TB HDDs to increase available storage capacity (maintaining SHR1).
However, I have searched the Synology site and I am still not sure if the NAS will work/is compatible with the new HDDs.
Any help much appreciated.
Tks

I am currently thinking of getting a NAS, mainly to stop paying for cloud storage and backup my phone.
a bonus would be to get media streaming. DLNA or plex should be fine.
my current ideas are:
1- DS423 - ~350 + cost of drives (minimum 200)
2- a used DS1512+ 4GB ram, and 2x4tb + 160 Sata SSD drives for 270
I know that the used one is end of life and won't be getting any updates but sounds like a good deal but I will probably have to run it locally as it won't be getting security updates even. it will also not run DSM 7 but I am not sure if it is worth spending double the money for.
wondering if there is something else that I should think about.
thanks

NAS for serving 4-5 4K BluRay movies simultaneously |

I want to be able to serve 4-5 different 4K movies simultaneously. I have been trying to calculate processor speed/power and connectivity speed to achieve this goal. An I9 processor may be able to process the data but without 4 lanes of 10g connectivity it may not be able to send the data to all 4 viewers. Any help with my weak math skills would be appreciated!

Hi, thanks for your videos, they're great and I'd love to support you.
I have a DS918+ which I think has now died as I've got the continual flashing blue light. I'm now looking to get the DS1522+ as a replacement. If you can create an amazon.ae affiliate link quickly before I buy, hopefully you'll get some benefit.
Note I'm looking to buy today, so hopefully you can get this done quickly
Thx, JP

Best Drive Configuration for Windows 11 Pro Storage Spaces |

I am building my first DIY NAS. I have all of the hardware.
My drive options are as follows:
Booting from a 256GB NVME with Windows 11 Pro
5x6TB 7200rpm + 1x500GB SSD available for an array.
I am only using this as a simple file server which will store movies that will be retrieved by my HTPC. It will also be used for Acronis backup storage of my gaming rig and the HTPC. It will not serve any other purpose. It will not be accessed by more than one computer at a time and will be on a 2.5GbE network.
I am interested in using Windows 11 Pro Storage Spaces. What are my best options for configuring it as far as parity/cache or other options? I have never used it before. I do not think I want to use Unraid or TrueNAS as I have zero experience with that either and am pretty comfortable with the Windows environment. I will be performing regular backups of this stored data to large external HDD to help avoid trajedy. Thanks for your suggestion!
