First 'real' NAS? |

I've been doing a *lot* of reading and watching, but not certain I've figured it out, thus the request.
I need to migrate away from a WD My Cloud 3Tb, 1 disk device. Not sure if it's gonna die, but *know* it's not an if it dies, but when. Currently ~50% full at the moment. Have offline storage of 4Tb as well.
Considering something like a QNAP TS-264 with 16GB memory, 2TB of M.2 storage and 12 - 16TB HDD storage. Primary use case is cloud storage (move away from Google Cloud, if practical) but have my own cloud capability for personal video, audio & photo storage.
It'd be nice to have it accessible remotely, and realize I may need to improve networking on my side (VPN, etc.) for that to happen as I go deeper into this.
Any alternates that I should strongly consider? Thanks!

LAN only NAS. Own ReadyNAS Business Pro RAID5, 6x2TB, (full) & Synology DS1019+ 5x10TB RAID6 (Full). Considering QNAP TS-1655 & QNAP TVS-h1688X. I looked @ DS-3622 but Synology wants branded HDs. Plan: Populating w EXOS 24TB, RAID6. Network is currently mostly 1Gb w some 2.5GB & WiFi 7. Like that 1688 is 10G out of box (longevity w/o cost of upgrading) & comes w 32GB ECC vs 8GB non ecc. Gen 4 M.2 vs Gen 3. Gen 2 usb 3.2 vs Gen 1 on 1655. 2030 availability of 1655. Unfamiliar w QNAP OS. As I understand it, QTS is the best option to suit 1 large storage pool where that storage is increased simply adding more 24GB drives? What does expanding look like w expansion units? Any way to have a second large Raid 6 storage pool (or expand the original) using the expansion units? Suggestions for 2xNVMe & 4x2.5 SATA SSD that do well in a NAS environment? Looking & units w high TBW/DWPD. So far looked @ Intel SSD DC P4511, Samsung PM893 & Intel D3-S4610. Suggestions for RAM for 128GB ECC?

DS220+ RAM Upgrade |

G'day Rob. I watched your video on upgrading the DS220+ with the 18GB RAM today, and as I desperately wanted to activate the object recognition in Synology Photo's, I ripped the 8GB DDR4 SODIMM out of my laptop and stuck it into the NAS.
I've done a memory test and it passed, though oddly, the Info Centre now shows a total of 6GB of RAM instead of 10GB (2+8). On your page, "Synology DS220+ 18GB Unofficial Memory Upgrade Installation Guide" there's no mention of what to do if it's recognised, passes, but is restricted to a lower capacity, so I'm hoping you may have an idea, please?
Thank you,
Jason

I am looking for my first NAS with a budget of around 400 €.
I have 2 4TB HDD's that I got as gifts and I am not afraid to build one, although I would like to enjoy the convenience of a closed product.
It would be for documents/photos and personal and programming projects. I would like to be able to expand with M2 if necessary.
Many Thanks

I am looking for a Qnap nas as Storage for photo end personal documents.
The TS-664 have my interest, but I'm not sure if it is possible to get more ram than 8GB, and if it's fixed ram on board?
Have your other suggestions for a good Qnap nas, with good possibilities for expansion and upgrading? And what do you think about TS-632x as alternative?
I need 2-4 M2 ssd for chasing
Cpu min. 2,2GHz
6-8 bays
2,5 (5-10) gigabit ethernet
8-16(32) ram - is ECC a must to day?
Hot swap and one hhd as spare in raid 6 (or 5)
THANKS a lot for your informative, professional and always inspirational video on YouTube!!
Best wishes
Erik from Denmark

Not liking the TOS5 and TOS6 isnt released for F4-424Pro yet in USA for download. So i'm considering a move to UnRaid. I am unable to procures a USB2.0 32GB Ultra Fit, best I can find at BestBuy is USB3.1 64GB. What process would I use to make this work?

Hi,
I've just got round to building a nas server I've been sitting on for a month. Brought me a snazzy gen 5 M2 drive (t705) but after putting it together realised that the heatsink that comes with this fast M2 doesn't have the clearance with the graphics card. (For av1 encoding) Is there a decent small (less than 1 cm heatsink) or such thinks as a 5.0 riser cable for M2 drives please help.

Hi - I am looking for some advice. I would like to build a new system to build out a home lab that will serve as long term NAS storage as well as streaming HD content within my network (likely over wifi). I am struggling to find a reasonably priced PSU, and unsure whether I am missing anything key? (will get SSDs later). I would like to use SSDs for the OS (thinking proxmox + truenas) as well as SSD for cache with the SSDs being the main storage area in a raid config.
here is my build so far..
AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS 9 Bay NAS Board with 32GB RAM
Crucial P3 Plus 1TB
JONSBO N3 Mini NAS Case
JONSBO HP-400S Pressure Profile CPU Radiator

Hi, again.
Is there any merit in buying a second hand unit such as a synology DS1515+ (~8 years old) DS916, or Qnap equivalents that are ~5 + years old?
Or are you, as I suspect, better buying new/nearly new to get more longevity and better tech?
Adrian
