Hey all.

I think I am leaning towards the Synology 224+ (but also considering the terramaster f2-423 (because of the multitude of videos from NASCompares YouTube).  I am brand new to the NAS world, so I like that Synology has intuitive software and sounds like it's got everything I would want.  My biggest use cases are: Running a Plex movie server (and dlna/smb server?) and backing up our phones (photos and videos).  We'd also likely use it to offload other files on our computer that we don't want taking up space. One video on the youtube channel showed pretty great performance with the Synology 224+ but I couldn't tell if he was using the 2gb of memory that comes with it, or if the memory was upgraded. I also wasn't sure if the drives were 5400 or 7200. I do love that the terramaster has much better hardware and more expansion possibilities, but wondering if it might be overkill?  Driveless, they both also seem to be around the same price.

So my first question is - was the benchmarking video using 2gb or more?
Second question - just how different (features) are the overall apps between the two systems?

Lately I was wondering if I should get a NAS but I’m not sure if I would make the right choice. I live by myself and would mostly use it for my own data. I have pictures on my PC and phone and some documents. I found this NAS but I’m not sure if it’s a bit too slow for my use. Could you maybe give me some advice?

After much research on nascompares.com, I have finally settled on the F4-424. I plan to install two 12Gb drives initially and some M.2 drives for OS storage and cache. The NAS will be used for backups (Mac & PC), multimedia (Plex), file storage (both general and video editing), and possibly VM/Docker usage in the future.

1. What would be the recommended drives (brand and size) for the two slots?
   
2. I realize that the M.2 for OS storage would need to be installed initially, but does the M.2 for caching need to be installed at the time of initial setup also?

I'm contemplating upgrading to this NAS and want to max 24TB in 12 slots QuTSHero RAID6. I am wondering if 24TB WD Gold is supported even though it's not listed in compatibility list by qnap.

I think they just didn't have a chance to test it yet and it should be supported?

Any ideas?

Built this exact system with NVMe 1TB drives. Multiple attempts at setting up RAID5 have worked only to fail during writes of larger files. Tried different FS, different OS's, and controlling for thermal and still no luck. Any help appreciated.

I currently use a Synology DS211j - which I have been using for a number of years.
It only has 6 TB of HDD in it (2x3TB) - and it VERY slow within DSM.
It is used for storing downloads, and for PLEX duties.
It can't play high quality video files locally it seems?

Anyway, i've moved house and looking to upgrade to a better box.
I will go with any NAS supplier.

I want it to be able to play high quality video locally and if needed, remotely after downgrading the video.
Current NAS can play them downgraded to 480p or lower over the net, depending on the connection the receiving end.

I'm torn between the ds923+ and ds423+ (because of possibility the 923 may not be good enough for the media) - but i'm open to any suggested NAS.

New to the forum; watched a lot of Nascompares videos,
I’ve had the Readynas 6000 Business Edition since new getting a bit long in the tooth now, contemplating a replacement ;2TB drive limit no SSD, Raidar is on the last version available and OS6 seems unobtainable

The Qnap 973ax looks interesting with both 2.5g and a 10g port, a mix of ssd hd and U2 drives
Also looking at SSD NAS units the Asustor Flashstore and the Qnap 574tx 

Why don’t more units have a display I find the display on the Readynas very useful ? Asustor do on the disk based units
As it lives in my lounge/tv room quietness is important , I put Noctua fans in the Readynas after it failed for that reason

Any modern NAS would be a step up in performance if not build quality

Synology seem solid but lack the hardware at the moment

Appreciate any ideas , feedback

Having just uploaded Jellyfin to my Synology NAS and have it working on my TV. I now want to have family members access the NAS through Jellyfin to watch the home movies I have on the NAS. Is this hard to accomplish?

Doing due diligence before buying first NAS.
I have about 25gb total personal photos between digital camera files and Google Photos. I really would like to use my NAS mainly for photo and general file storage, with a possibility of media server in the future. I would like it to function as closely to Google as possible but I am having trouble deciding between Synology and QNAP.

Things that are important to me:
- photo indexing / organization
- retaining metadata from Google and easy importing
- ease of use for tech-illiterate
- good mobile app (Android)
- sharing between 2-10 users
- and of course security

It seems that price-wise they are pretty comparable, but the main differences are hardware vs software. Please provide advice, or pros/cons? Thank you.

We have had a family NAS for a couple of years now - a QNAP TS-230 with 2TBs in RAID 1 - perfect for all four of us for file backup. I feel like I need an upgrade as I constantly find myself using up the most storage space out of all shared spaces - in our NAS, in our shared Google Drive and my PC. I want to get a NAS for my own use. I want to dump my files (mainly photos and other documents) and have them auto-sync between my PC and the NAS like I'm doing now. I also want to start building my own media server. I intend to install Plex or something similar and start uploading rips of my Blu-Rays and DVDS. I also have an extensive music collection and I would like to be able to sync and stream. Not sure if I need to transcode. Futureproofing is essential and I want to have enough space for the next few years at best, so I am looking for a 4 bay box with at least 10 TB. Not sure if I want to start with two disks or just get four immediately. The Synology DS423+ is catching my eye.
