Which NAS for Development & Photo |

Hi All,
I'm not able to decide about which NAS to choose QNAP TS-464-8G vs Synology DS923+ or any other one.
Here are my needs:
- I'm having a lot of photos in Google Photos as well as in Apple Photos and I want to move them all in one place
- I would like also to host websites on my NAS (not more than 3)
- Deploy some microservices (SpringBoot/PostGres and an Angular UI)
- NAS will be accessible from Internet
After all what I've read in internet regarding QNAP, I'm not very confident. The TS-464 seems very good to fit my needs but I'm afraid about evolutions on System and Apps. QTS Live Demo is down since last week.
Synology is good on Ecosystem and Software but hardware configuration are Just-Just or starts to become old (R1600/J4125) (DS423+/DS923+...etc.)
What do you recommend me ? Going with QNAP will be secure ?
Not having btrfs will not be a limitation ? Same question for SHRx ? Shall I consider that ?
Is it a good choice to have an iGPU knowing that I've a Sony Android TV.
Thank you in advance

Home NAS options |

I'm looking at getting a device that can sit alongside my other entertainment devices (PS5, Nintendo switch, virgin tevo box and wifi router) under the TV unit.
My wife and i take a lot of photos and video on our phones and we would like a way on getting the quickly and easily off our phones into storage. So it doesn't clog up our phones and laptops
I would quite like it to be as quiet as possible as it will be in the main lounge area so don't really want loud fans starting up and the mechanical clanking that you can get from some storage options.
Any advice as to what to look for would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks
Adam

I currently have a Synology DS220j with 2x Seagate Ironwolf 4TB drives - 5900 rpm, 64Mb cache. I'm beginning to get a bit frustrated with the length of time it takes the NAS to handle big file transfers to it (e.g. 100 image files @ typically 50MB per file). How likely would I be to see any perceived improvement in file handling time by upgrading to Ironwolf Pro drives, which spin faster and have more cache?
The alternative would much more expensive, of course - a 4-bay NAS with drives configured as RAID 5...

Hi,
Watched your review. Have selected DS923+. Want to build a media server. I have 4 WD 2TB Red drives that are on the compatibility list.
Question: Once I set up, will I be able to upgrade the drives 1 at a time as budget allows?
Thanks

Hi, I currently have a built plex server with 10tb raid setup. The server is getting long in the tooth and drive expansion is minimal. Im looking at moving to a NAS specifically for storage and something like a nuc to run as the server. Everywhere online I am finding NAS as the plex server which I don't want. I think I might prefer more bays with low disk size but I need to get to 20tb and hopefully at some point additional storage. Right now my use case is plex but may want to use it for more later. Surveillance is never a question for this. That said what nas would you recommend that doesn't necessarily break the bank. Thanks Mike

Migrating to new NAS |

Moving from DS220+ to DS1522+. Situation: DS220 has 2 x 12TB drives mirrored. I have one 12TB drive for the 1522+. Want to end up with all three 12TB drives in the DS1522+
If I want to migrate from DS220+ to DS1522+ what would be the easiest way to do that?
My thought would be to setup on the DS1522+ with the single 12TB drive. Use Synology migration assistant to move my files from DS220+ to the DS1522+ and then add the two drives from the DS220+ to the DS1522+ and expand the storage pool to create a Synology Hybrid RAID environment. Is that possible?

NAS / Drive Compatability Concern |

After thorough research, I've chosen the DS1522+ for my home NAS setup, planning to use 4 x ST20000NT001 - 20TB Ironwolf Pro HDDs and later adding a fifth 10TB drive for security cameras. To boost performance, I aim to include 2 x M.2 Gen 4 drives for caching, yet finding suitable RAM for a 32GB upgrade poses a challenge. I'm open to using your affiliate link for the RAM or M.2 Kit if you have any suggestions.
My primary concern is drive compatibility, as Synology's list doesn't confirm support for the 20TB Ironwolf drives. Could you verify this based on your testing?
Identifying any major concerns with my plan would be appreciated. Note: Noise isn't an issue, and the device will be UPS-powered.

NAS/DAS For Remote Video Editing |

I want to either build or buy my first NAS. I want it to be good for mastering video and sound projects as my business relies heavily on these two services. I provide videography services to businesses and musicians and I am also making online video courses.
I would like the system to be redundant and a good backup solution for all my data. I currently have 12TB of data floating around on multiple drives. So I definitely want to use something like RAID 5 or RAID 6.
I feel like 24TB is a good amount for future proofing , but I would like the option to expand.
And I would like the highest specs as far as processing, video RAM, and RAM. A mixture of HDD and SSD would be nice, but if not, I would prioritize speed.
I use DaVinci Resolve and I would like to host my own project server on the NAS.
I’ve built a PC before and I’m decently tech savvy. I wouldn’t mind spending the time to learn all about it because the knowledge will be valuable as I choose solutions in the future. Thanks!
