  NAS SYSTEM
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-20-2023, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I been looking at a synology system and im considering ether the ds1522+ and the expansions bays when needed or the ds2422+ and call it a day. the 1522 with 2 dx517 are about the cost of a single 2422.
the reason i wanted so many bays is i figured that id need a separate volume for my plex/cloud from my nvr. as id like to have raid 6 with a hot spare for the plex/cloud and at less a single drive for nvr

also i been playing with the idea of dva series but the 2 bay seem not that powerful and the 4 bay is very expensive

i plan on having about 6-8 cameras

I'm currently running a WHS 2011, but currently have a new router that supports a 10gbe output. its the asus ax11000 i was wondering whether the below would work in my whs and how much difference i would see mainly with plex.

ASUS XG-C100C - Backward compatible 10GBase-T PCIe Network Adapter with 5/2.5/1G and 100Mbps standards, one RJ45 port and integrated QoS Red/Silver

Inquiry on Media Server for Offline Setup with DS224+
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-20-2023, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi NASCompares Team,

I hope this message finds you well. I'm seeking advice on choosing a media server for my DS224+ with particular considerations for offline setup and local network sharing.

Specifics:

I need a media software that allows online setup but works seamlessly offline.
The ability to share media via a local network when offline is crucial.
Considering these requirements and my DS224+ setup, I would appreciate your insights on platforms like Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Best regards,

  DS723+ vs TS-264-8GB
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-20-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Team,

Please could I ask for your advice on a first NAS purchase.

I have narrowed down between the Synology DS723+ and the QNAP TS 264-8GB based on what I have learnt from your website/YouTube videos.

I'm happy with having two bays for HDDs with the ability to extend with M.2 drives later down the line.

I will mainly be using the NAS to store video files (movies/tv 1080p and 4K HDR) and photos.
I’d like to transfer as much data to the NAS via USB if possible. Most of my data sits on external SSD’s ATM so if I can bypass transferring data to a computer then to the NAS it would make life easier.

I will be accessing video files via Nvidia shield (via Jellyfin/Plex) or VLC player on MacBook.

Would the larger RAM on the QNAP be better long term?

Keen to purchase the one which will last be the longest

Many thanks for your help and information

Hi,
I have been looking at QNAP. Plan is for home office at site A running RAID 1 initially with 2 20TB drives (thinking TS464).. Site B is offsite cloud and also a work location so it would be great if items could be auto backup there and then site A is updated. Not sure which QNAP model.
Also, I would like a small business at site C and D to do cloud backup to site B, but their data would not be visible by anyone from site A or B. They would also do RAID 1 at their site. Thinking QNAP TS-431 at each site.
Is this possible with QNAP, if not QNAP is there another solution. If yes, let me know how to buy through Amazon with your referral link.
Mostly all just data files, photo backup and perhaps some music. Sites A and B have MAC, iPhone, iPad, Windows, linux. Sites C and D are iPhone, iPad and Windows.
Thank you,
Idaho

  Buying my first NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-20-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys!
I'm lost in the NAS jungle. I've been watching your youtube videos for the last week trying to understand it all.
I run a photography / videography business myself (I'm the only worker) and am tired of handling 15 different HDDs on my desk, not remembering where I put that file or where that folder is.
I want to improve my workflow by having everything in the same place and a large storage, an 8-bay of 20TB drives.

Now the question is, as I'm not sure if I am willing to take the risk to bring it online due to all the hacks I've been hearing you talk about. I might just keep the NAS open in my home network to play it safe. With that in mind, maybe I dont need the fanciest or most expensive NAS? I was however looking at the QNAP TVS-h874T since I want this NAS to last a long time and this one is future proof with the Gen4 NVMes and TB4. But maybe it's also overkill for my needs? Perhaps the QNAP TVS-872XT would be enough? The Synology 1821+ is cheap but too slow..

Greetings guys, love your cannel and i am digging deep to deside where to go from my qnap ts-328. I want moore powerfull cpu moore ram and a hdmi output. I bought the ts-328 as a test and to learn how to use a nas and what my needs are. i populated it with 3 x 8tb exos disks. I think i am ready now to move on and use the ts-328 as a backup on/off and only that. My first choise was the ts-653D then i saw the ts-464 , a lovely machine. But now we have the Asustore Flashstore 6 Silent like i want it. HELP! If i sortof know may way around a Qunap will it be hard to switch to Asustore? and what about safety , is Qunap and Asustore equally safe/unsafe. I can get a used cheap ts 653D but how noisy is that conpared to the Asustore flash? and last but not least futureproofing. Will the Asustore be the best choise long term. Witch one would you buy of the 3 i listed here. Thank you for your time. Merry xNAS guys

  1st NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-20-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Never did a NAS and don't know much other than, I am going with Unraid to make a plex/emby server and use for VM/file management. Plan on doing a raid 1. What is purchased/built:
Jonsbo N1 CASE
B550i strix MOBO
2x 32gb mushkin ecc DDR4
Ryzen 5 4650g pro CPU
5x 16tb exos CPU
S650 NZXT PSU (from my H1 case)
NVME- 5 port sata and nvme extender to use rear pcie 3.0 instead of front pcie 4.0 with heatsink.

Here are my questions:

My PSU didn't have any molex connectors so I got the pinout and made a cable. Should I split the 2 molex connectors on the n1 to 2 separate set of molex wires instead of connecting the 2 to the same set?

For unraid, do I put the os on a internal ssd or I have a portable ssd I can use, size matter?

Will I benefit having say 2x Optane 905P Series 1.5TB (they on sale for $400) connected to say a Synology E10M20-T1 10GbE Ethernet & Dual M.2 Adapter Card?

Just trying to the complete build at the same time and start doing my transfers.

Which NAS for Development & Photo
Posted by: marclas - 12-19-2023, 07:27 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi All,

I'm not able to decide about which NAS to choose QNAP TS-464-8G vs Synology DS923+ or any other one.
Here are my needs:
- I'm having a lot of photos in Google Photos as well as in Apple Photos and I want to move them all in one place
- I would like also to host websites on my NAS (not more than 3)
- Deploy some microservices (SpringBoot/PostGres and an Angular UI)
- NAS will be accessible from Internet

After all what I've read in internet regarding QNAP, I'm not very confident. The TS-464 seems very good to fit my needs but I'm afraid about evolutions on System and Apps. QTS Live Demo is down since last week.
Synology is good on Ecosystem and Software but hardware configuration are Just-Just or starts to become old (R1600/J4125) (DS423+/DS923+...etc.)

What do you recommend me ? Going with QNAP will be secure ?
Not having btrfs will not be a limitation ? Same question for SHRx ? Shall I consider that ?
Is it a good choice to have an iGPU knowing that I've a Sony Android TV.

Thank you in advance
