Backup HDD/SSD NAS

#1
Looking to Backup files from 5 Macs on two volumes, one HDD and one SSD. Needed: RAID 1 or 5 on both volumes, 10GB networking, Future option to run <3 docker containers. Nice to have: Low idle power, Quiet, Not rack mount

For backing up files from 5 Macs across two volumes (HDD and SSD) with RAID 1 or RAID 5, plus 10GbE networking and running a few Docker containers, I’d recommend the Synology DS923+ as a great fit:
  • The DS923+ supports up to 4 drives, so you can create separate RAID volumes for your HDDs and SSDs.
  • It has a powerful AMD processor and 8GB RAM (expandable), which handles Docker containers well.
  • Crucially, the DS923+ supports a 10GbE network upgrade card, so you can get the faster network speeds you need.
  • It’s quiet and energy efficient, perfect for home office or small business use.
The DS423+ is a solid option too but does not support 10GbE upgrades, which might limit your network speed in the future.
If you want native 10GbE out of the box with solid performance, you could also consider the QNAP TS-474 or TS-464 with a 10GbE add-on card, but those may be above your budget.
For RAID, RAID 1 offers simple mirroring for redundancy, while RAID 5 provides a good balance of redundancy and usable space (minimum 3 drives required per volume).
Given your $800 diskless budget, the DS923+ is a smart choice for future-proofing with 10GbE and Docker support.
