Synology 224+, 2025 4 bay models and a quandary

Totally get the dilemma—those extra 2x16TB drives are a nice bonus, but Synology’s latest move definitely throws a wrench in things. Honestly, if you're keen on staying within the Synology ecosystem and want to actually use all four IronWolf Pros without headaches, the DS923+ is your best bet right now.

No HDD lock-in on that model, so your existing and spare drives will work just fine. It’s solid, snappy, and gives you more flexibility before this whole branded-only business really takes over. You'd basically be securing a more open setup while you still can.

If you’re sitting around the £500 mark, that unit’s still within reach—especially considering what it gives you long-term. I'd say grab the 923+ while you still have full drive freedom.
